Our body ……………. in many different ways throughout the day.

We can move our …………… when allof our bones, muscles and jointswork together.

The ................... system consists of all of our ……………, muscles and joints.

BONES

All of our bones form the skeleton. Our bones are hard and rigid. The skeleton holds the body up. It gives us shape.

It protects the most delicate parts of thebody like the brain, the heart and the lungs.

The main bones in our body

The bones in our head:The head has two parts: the skull and the face:

- The skull bones protect the brain.- The face bones protect and give shape to our face.

The bones in our trunk:

These are the most important bones in our trunk:

- The spine is made up of little short bones called vertebrae. The spine holds the body upright.

- The ribs form a cage around the lungs and the heart. They connect the spine to the sternum.

- The sternum is a flat bone. It’s located in the middle of the chest.

- The pelvis is connected to the legs.

JOINTS

We have joints where different bones meet.We use our joints to bend parts of the body.We have flexible joints in our neck, our arms, our hips and our legs.

Page 18: 3º Locomotor

Other bones are joined together so closely that they cannot move, for example, the bones in the skull. They are fixed bones.

21. Now draw your own skull. Look at the example.

22. What types of joints are these, flexible or fixed? Listen and ask your partner.

Knee Skull Ankle Wrist

Is the elbow a fixed joint?

No, it isn’t. It is a flexible joint.

Is the shoulder a flexible joint? Yes, it is.

4. MUSCLES

Our …………… are covered by muscles.Muscles are ………….. and soft.We need our …………….. to move our bones. Also, they permit us to breathe, to …………, to sit down or to move any …………. of our body.

Types of muscles

There are voluntary and involuntary muscles:

- We move our voluntary muscles when we want to.The muscles in our arms are voluntary muscles.

- The involuntary muscles move automatically. We do not control their movements. For example, the heart moves all the time.

- The involuntary muscles move when we want them to…………………

The muscles in our head.

We use muscles in our face to open and close our eyes (eyelid muscles) and mouth (masseter muscles).

The muscles in our trunk:

The abdominals allow us to bend forward. The pectorals help us breathe. The trapezium muscles in our back allow us to move our head and arms.We use the deltoid muscles to raise our arms.

The muscles in our limbs

The biceps and triceps allow us to bend and stretch our arms. The hand muscles allow us to move our fingers and wrists. We use our quadriceps and calf muscles to walk.Muscles in the feet allow us to move our toes and ankles.

29. Now write the names of the muscles in the following pictures.
