Solutions for Fibre Optics

Optical fibres are fibres made of glass which transport a signal containing several types of information at very high speeds in the form of pulses of light.

This technology allows very high data flows to be achieved, up to several tens of Gigabits/second.

The use of optical fibre technology allows networks to be fed over long distances with minimum losses. It also offers the advantage of being insensitive to electromagnetic interference.

Description of the FTTH Network

ON (Optical Node)

The ON is the location which houses the active components for transmission and switching and which acts as the interface between the collection and access networks. Optical distribution systems are available for open frames or for 19" racks. The choice between these two installation options mainly depends on the size of the location. For a large, shelter-type location the RFO NG solution on open frames is more suitable for more flexibility during patching.

Transport Network

The transport network, also known as the access network, routes the fibres from the access node to the street cabinet. High capacity fibre optic cables and splice protection enclosure are used for this part of the network.

3M offers a full range of splice protection enclosures. There are four criteria of selection:

- Networkconfiguration: It is essential to know, whether configuration is of MID SPAN, STRAIGHT JOINT, DERIVATION PONT or DISTRIBUTION TYPE. The type of configuration involved will determine the front face of the housing.

- The environment: This criteria determines the necessary IP (Protection class) for the housings. Locations with direct water exposure may need a higher IP class.

- The capacity: This relates to the number and type of splices at the point of connection

- The cables: This relates to cable characteristics such as the diameter, the number of fibres and the structure.

Description of the FTTH Network

FTTH Access and Distribution Network

The access and distribution network includes the section from the street cabinet up to the the fibre optic distribution point (DP). The street cabinet is a point where the building operator provides other operators with access to the lines. The fibre optic distribution point (DP) is the node in the access network architecture from which clients are connected. Closures protect the jointing points of cables between these two network locations.

Distribution Solution for Buildings

Connections in buildings are the final stage in an FTTH network. Fibres located at the base of a building are distributed and finally connected to subscribers.

There are two types of architecture:

Direct Drop architecture (1)An architecture is said to be "direct drop" when at floor landings there are no fibre boxes provided between the Interior Optical Termination in the communications board for each of the dwellings and the operators services location (or room) at the base of the building. In this case an individual "drop" cable links each dwelling to the operators' services location (or room).

Riser cable architecture (2)An architecture is said to be a "riser cable" architecture when at floor landings, there are floor boxes provided between the Interior Optical Termination in the communications board for each of the dwellings and the operators services location (or room) at the base of the building. In this case a riser cable links the operators' services location (or room) to all the boxes on a floor landing.

RFO NGII Optical Distribution Unit as Open Frame Configuration> Description

The RFO NG is the latest generation of an open frame ODF with cable head blocks, tray modules for connectivity handling like splice and PLC splitter storage as well as advanced patch cord management.

The new design is optimized for the latest trends in FTTH networks and suits central office as well as POP applications.

The new cable head blocks are downwards compatible and can handle alternatively all the tray modules from new or previous RFO generations. This flexibility allows to utilize current inventories as well as the migration to the new pre-connectorised tray modules.

It can be mounted easily and without specific tools.

This new design improves both, the fibre management in the modules as well as the routing of the patch cords.

With FTTH moving into the last mile - the distribution network - there is growing demand for 19 distribution panels. 3M has developed a range of swivelling drawers 1, 2 and 3U fitting to 19 standards for installations in outdoor street cabinets or in POP stations (Point Of Presence)

This solution made of plastic allows to save 75% in weight compared to usual metal drawers, which not only facilitates the handling of this product but also creates savings on transportation cost. ECAM Connect Drop CablesThe ECAM Connect is designed to provide SC / APC ruggedized connectivity assembled on outdoor drop cables. Typically these are 3 to 6 mm or fl at or fi gure 8-type (FRP) cables. 3M pre-assembled drop cables use round cable with 5 mm . The connection is based on IEC standardized SC footprint. The housing which is assembled around the connector protects the connector against environmental impacts and can be plugged into any standard SC simplex coupling.ECAM Connect is designed for above and below grain drop connections to closures with corresponding ECAM Connect ports. For an easy plug and play installation ECAM Connect can be plugged into BPEO S0, BPEO S1 or BPEO S1,5 closures without the need to open the closure. Standard SC couplings are pre-assembled inside the closure (see picture). Unused ports are sealed with blind plugs. To install a new client only remove the blind plug from the ECAM Connect port in the BPEO closure and insert the ECAM Connect plug with assembled drop cable. Drop cables are terminated on one side for alternative connection on the customer premises and are available in diff erent lengths. For BPEO closure types with ECAM Connect, please refer to the corresponding Product Bulletins of BPEO S0 ECAM Connect, BPEO S1 ECAM Connect or BPEO S1,5 ECAM Connect closures.

ECAM Connect SC/APC Field Mountable KitThe 3M ECAM Connect SC housing is designed to protect an SC simplex connector assembled on an outdoor drop cable. The ECAM Connect Kit contains of a fi eld mountable SC/APC NPC (No Polish Connector) for outdoor cables andthe housing which is assembled around the connector. 3.3 Wall and Pole Distribution Network

Its design is based on the BMX type outdoor box range. Its size has been reduced to meet the needs of a discrete or small-sized installation.

The housing can be installed either on pole or wall.

The hinge-mounted housing cover closure is latch operated.

The cables are anchored inside the housing on a strain relief bar.

FTB (Fiber Terminal Box)

The FTB is an optical fibre distribution housing It is designed for FTTH applications on walls or on posts.
