SOLUTIONS FOR THE AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS INDUSTRY
One Resource. Hundreds of Products. Unlimited Solutions.
3M Electronics Markets Materials Division brings exceptional technical and design
capabilities to the creation of materials solutions for highly demanding and
dynamic automotive industry.
These solutions involve adhesives, tapes, marking systems, abrasives,
specialty chemicals and coatings. They serve a broad range of
applications that result in improved manufacturing processes,
higher quality electronics components, enhanced productivity,
and reduced environmental impact. To help assure these
successful outcomes, engineers at a global network of
3M Application Development Centers design solutions for our
clients. Comprehensive expertise makes 3M a start-to-finish
resource for meeting a vast array of challenges in the electronics
industry.
• Thermal Management
• EMI/RFI Shielding
• Product Identification
• Cleaning
• Lapping, Polishing, and Planarization
• Product Security and Protection
• Packaging and Shipping
Higher integration densities of electronic components
and the resulting greater waste heat generation
require appropriate heat management in automotive
electronics, the new core competency of car manu-
facturers. A further consideration to accommodate as
many components as possible in ever-decreasing
spaces often makes soldering impossible. 3M can help
you to solve these new requirements efficiently and
economically.

Cleaning
3M™ Novec™ Engineered Fluids are used in a wide variety of
electronics cleaning applications, including vapor degreasing,
immersion, aerosol spray cleaning and hand wiping. Cleaning
systems incorporating Novec fluids help you address environmental
and worker safety concerns-while offering excellent cleaning performance.
• Extremely low surface tension and viscosity to penetrate under surface mount devices.
• Non-corrosive and compatible with sensitive substrates
• Can be used in existing vapor degreasing equipment
• Reduced emissive and drag-out losses
• "Cost-in-use" comparable to other solvent systems
• Fast drying
• Selective solvency
• Low water solubility
Fluorochemical Coatings
3M™ Novec™ Electronic Coatings provide protection from moisture, soils,
humidity and other environmental contaminants for many electronic
components. They are fluorochemical acrylate polymers that are surface
modifiers and provide very thin coatings for anti-migration, anti-stiction and anti-corrosion. Used on printed
circuit boards, MR heads in disk drives, and sensitive electronic components, they can offer:
• Improved reliability
• Extended life of the product
• Reduced process time
• Excellent environmental and safety properties
3M™ Novec™ ECG-1700 fluid has been formulated to replace 3M™ Flurorad™ FC-722, FC-732, FC-724
and FC-725™ fluids, and to meet the purity solvent demands of the electronics industry.

Development and technical support
3M’s goal is to use existing solutions optimally and develop new solutions for new customer requirements.
To achieve this, 400 chemists and engineers from 9 countries are hard at work at our European Development
Laboratory in Neuss, Germany.
In this ultra-modern laboratory,state-of-the-art adhesive and markingsystems products are developed forthe Automotive Industry.
Our customers can find out aboutthem at meetings and workshops onthe spot.
Our local technical service engineers, based in Customer Technical Centresacross Europe, are available to supportyou in the practical implementationof a 3M solution for your individualapplication.
Regulations and Recycling
Regulations, specifications and standards play a crucial role in supplying car manufacturers and the whole
component supply industry. The self-imposed obligation by car manufacturers to re-use 95 per cent of the mass of
a vehicle, to be implemented by 2015, is particularly important.
For this reason, an internationalmaterials database system (IMDS)has been set up.
This database contains informationabout the materials used to manu-facture the individual componentssupplied.
3M is particularly keen on this subject.Products supplied to the automotiveindustry by 3M are gradually incor-porated into the IMDS system, andchecked for reusability and recyclability.
This provides efficient support of andinformation on product environmetalsustainability to our customers.
