Six Sigma Solves Customer ProblemA major national window manufacturer was experiencing qualityissues with one of its new product designs. 3M applied Six Sigma methodology and, together, the team developed a solution in less than a month.

“Because of Six Sigma, our customer complaints have been eliminated and our costs have been cut in half. This is real money. We fixed what was a customer problem for us and have extended the use of 3M™ VHB™ Tape to other products.” --Principal Engineer

Road Map To Success At Major Express Shipper

To better understand the customer, Process Mapping was applied to one of a dozen of processes used at the company’s huge campus.

Mapping led to an initial big idea—a 3M tape dispenser that saved 20% in raw materials and 50% percent in labor.

The customer was so excited about process mapping that it awarded 3M its box sealing tape business, all its new machine purchases, as well as tape on existing non-3M machines.

“Specifically, the mapping project made the decision easier. I was told they had needed to do something just like this, but they knew it would be a huge task. No one had the time,” the 3M rep reported.

A major computer manufacturer ships some servers in cartons with wood skids, making it impossibleto automatically tape the bottom of the carton shut.A 3M cross-functional team took the challenge.

The team developed a 3M-Matic™ Fully-Automatic Random Case Sealer specifically for the customer that senses when a server cartonis coming down the line and handles the box differently, without manual intervention or disruption to the high-speed packaging line.
