3G (Third Generation)
3G, short for third Generation, is the thirdgeneration of mobile telecommunications technology. 3Gtelecommunication networks support services that providean information transfer rate of at least 200 Kbit/s.However, many services advertised as 3G provide higherspeed than the minimum technical requirements for a 3Gservice
Standards are typically branded 3G
•The UMTS system, first offered in2001, standardized by 3GPP used primarily inEurope, Japan, China, and other regionspredominated by GSM 2G system infrastructure.•The original and most widespread radio interface iscalled W-CDMA.•The CDMA2000 system, first offered in2002, standardized by 3GPP2, used especially inNorth America and South Korea, sharinginfrastructure with the IS-95 2G standard. The cellphones are typically CDMA2000 and IS-95 hybrids. The latest release EVDO Rev B offers peak rates of14.7 Mbit/s downstream.
Applications of 3G
•)
1. Rapid growth in text, WAP and other data traffic- up to 50%
of total mobile traffic within 5 years
2. Mobile & Internet penetration both growing rapidly
3. Mobile penetration likely to exceed PCs & fixed
4. Alliances forming between major mobile, IT and e-
commerce players
5. Mobile commerce and multimedia identified as key growth
areas - but need bandwidth to deliver
