description

Design communication used to be about telling a story - communicating the how's and why's of a design to multiple audiences. SolidWorks does a great job of providing all of the actors (no pun intended), but 3DVIA Composer makes the story come alive!

Storyboard Creation

• Using 3DVIA Composer for more than technical publications

Design reviews

Product Sales

And more…

• Design war boards

Concepts before we get to the final design

• Kit Bashing

Taking what we have existing and apply it to the new design

• Storyboards

How did we come to this conclusion?

What were the original resources?

How interchangeable can we make our products?

Design War Boards

• Using 3DVIA Composer to display sketch ideas

“Napkin” sketches

Display various ideas for review−Using scanned images

Using Existing Models

• Ultimately we need a 3D model for 3DVIA Composer

• Reviewing all current models

What information can we reuse from these models?

Do we need to recreate all?

Resources

• 3DVIA Composer can read all types of CAD and modeling formats

• Which means that all types of web sites can be used to get 3D model content

CAD models−.SLDASM; SLDPRT

−.IGES; STEP

−.CATPart; .CATProduct

−.PRT; .ASM

Design/Surface models−.3DS

−.OBJ

Kit-Bashing

• Kit-bashing or model bashing is a practice whereby a new scale model is created by taking pieces out of commercial kits. These pieces may be added to a custom project or to another kit.

Using existing model to recreate concepts and ideas

The benefit of using 3DVIA Composer is the model doesn’t need to be a similar size to be used for kit-bashing

Capture change

• Geometry tab

Actors can be scaled, updated and copied when the Assembly selection is turned off

Assembly groups can also be copied using Ctrl+C and pasted using Ctrl+V or by using the right mouse button in the Assembly tab

Using the Geometry Copy will return more predictable results than a Windows Copy and Paste

• Created a view for the change and creating visual changes

• Geometry update can be unpredictable when updating

Performance

• Using SMG files instead of reading in the entire CAD format

Faster updates when changes are made

Use the SMG files to create the main assembly

SMG files can be created from within SolidWorks

• Creating Project files

• Using 3DVIA Sync to create Shattered file structures

Redesign concepts

• The ability to reference other sources can help get ideas across more clearly

• 3DVIA Composer does not need to have a complete model to develop and idea

• SMG file are read into existing file more quickly than importing from a CAD format file

• Updates more quickly than re-importingCAD data

Communication

• Communication with 3DVIA Composer can be done through:

3DVIA Composer Player

Web browser

Downloadable app from Apple−Iphone/ipad

Telling the Story

• Once the designs have been reviewed and decided 3DVIA Composer has already created a design history and resource path for all the files

• A user can quickly go through the view images or review an animation to understand how the final product was generated

• The SMG files becomes a portfolio for the design
