3D Model Development: Work in ProgressDigital Skyscrapers

Ive created two initial skyscraper models, the first model Idesigned and constructed based on reference materials. Thesecond is a generic test model for the purpose of lighting effect.

Both these models are works in process and not yet completed.

    Model 01

The first model I designed from scratch, and based the design on

an actual building thats situated near 1 Mill Street.

I liked the design and shape of this building and became the basisfor my design.

    My initial design for this

    model.

Development design for details of the model.

With these initial designs I began constructing the model.

    4/12

I began construction by creating a simple box the dividing theboxes in half and adjusting the proportions, I them partiallyextruded one face, and added geometry.

Here I began constructing the front face of the building, shaping itby adjusting the position of the vertices.

I cam across several problems when constructing the front, therefore separated it from the back of the model. This may causeissues further down the development when reconnecting thegeometry again, however this was a learning construction.

Here Ive reconnected the front to the back of the model and

began constructing the windows and balconies.

    8/12

Here Ive constructed the balconies and added them to the model.

    9/12

Here Ive begun constructing the main entrance.

This is the point where model is currently developed. From here Illfurther construct the final attributes for the front and then theattributes for the back. Then Ill begin to texture, and construct thewindows. The final stage will be applying lighting to the inside ofthe building to illuminate from the inside out. Its been considerednow that our final FX sequence will be shot at night.

    Model 02

This model was a rough test, hence there being previousdevelopment work. The design is very symmetrical and linear. Thepurpose for this model was to test the textures and theconstruction of internal illumination and how it would appear.

My initial test renders showed that the internal lighting was notstrong enough to illuminate the outside of the building therefore Iadded and external Omni light to partially illuminate the exterior,

whilst still keeping a sense of night.

To create illumination from the exterior, I had to add geometry tothe interior for the lights on the inside to reflect of. For the internallights I used a number of Omni lights, that I tinted and orangeyellow to create the sense they were light bulb light.

Here the external Omni light illuminating partially the exterior, Iapplied textures to this model, a bump and diffuse map, whichwere cement inspired.

The applying of the external light fits in with the concept of thenight time scene, as there will be other building that are in closeproximity illuminating the outside of each other.

Here a top view of the model.

The purpose of this model was to test the possibility of creating thenighttime cityscape as well as how to illuminate the buildingsrespectively.

From here Ill continue to test illuminating the scene from the insideof the model, as well as more efficient way of construction for thefinal models. The last stage will be constructing more effectivetextures for the model.

Both these models are works in progress, and beginning tests forthe final constructions.
