This design has been speciallydigitized for tear-away stabilizer. After the stabilizer is removed, beautiful fabric and embroideryremains.

When you download thegingerbread house design, youwill find multiple files. Some arethe embroidery files, and theothers are dieline files markedwith the letters "DL". Dielines areused to cut the fabric to thecorrect shape and size.

Open and print each dieline fileusing embroidery software. If youdo not have embroidery software,Wilcom TrueSizer is a freeprogram to use.

First spray one side of a piece ofcutaway stabilizer with temporaryadhesive. Smooth the stabilizeronto the wrong side of the fabricpiece.

Page 3: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

Then spray the back side of theprinted dieline pieces withtemporary adhesive, and smoothit onto the right side of the fabric. For this design the front and backfabric pieces for every file willhave cutaway stabilizer on them.

Cut the dieline shapes out of theadhered fabric and cutawaystabilizer. Many of the fabricpieces have openings that needto be cut with a craft knife. Cutout each of the openings using acraft knife and cutting mat. Thenremove the paper dieline.

Hoop a piece of tear-awaystabilizer firmly. Make sure it isnice and tight with no wrinkles.

Page 4: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

Attach the hoop onto themachine, and load the firstembroidery file (not the dielinefiles).

Use a 75/11 sharp sewing needleinstead of an embroidery needle. The sharp sewing needle has afiner point, and it will makesmaller perforations in thestabilizer.

Embroider the design. The firstthing to embroider will be the"front piece dieline" (or outlinestitch). This marks the area onthe stabilizer where the fabricpiece will be placed.

After the dieline has sewn, remove the hoop from themachine, but do not unhoop thestabilizer. Spray the stabilizerside of the front fabric piece withtemporary adhesive. Smooth thefabric piece onto the tear-awaystabilizer inside of the sewndieline.

Then place the hoop back ontothe machine, and embroider thetackdown for the front fabricpiece. The tackdown will hold thefabric piece in place for theremainder of the design.

Page 5: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

After the front fabric piece is inplace, all of the inner details ofthe embroidery will sew out.

Stop before sewing the "backpiece tackdown" step.

Remove the hoop from themachine, and turn it over so theback side of the embroidery isfacing up. Spray the stabilizer ofthe back fabric piece withtemporary adhesive, and smoothit into place on the back side ofthe embroidery.

As all the embroidery from hereon out will be seen from bothsides, wind a bobbin to matcheach of the remaining threadcolors used into the design. Forthis design, the pieces with candycanes will need two bobbin colorsto be wound.

Place the bobbin into themachine, and follow the colorchange sheet to embroider the"back piece tackdown".

Then embroider the remainingdetails, ribbon holes, andfinishing borders.

After embroidering, tear away theexcess stabilizer. Also make sureto remove the stabilizer from allthe openings and lace details.

Repeat these steps to embroiderall the pieces of the gingerbreadhouse (files "a"-"h").

Make sure to embroider two roofpieces (file "h") as two will beneeded to make the final house.

In this tutorial, the gingerbreadhouse is assembled usingribbons. If preferred, a hot gluegun or other clear glue of yourchoice can be used to assemblethe design instead.

You can also use a hand sewingneedle and thread matching theembroidered borders to handsew all the pieces together.

Page 8: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

To assemble the house usingribbons, first use an awl to puncha hole into every embroideredeyelet across all the pieces.

Make sure your awl makes a bigenough hole for your needle topass through with a ribbonthreaded through it. A needlepuller can also be helpful to pullthe threaded needle through thepunched hole.

The pieces of the gingerbreadhouse can be tied together withribbons in two different ways.

The first is a double knot that ishidden on the inside of thehouse. This leaves only a smallband of ribbon visible on thefinished product.

For this method, cut a piece ofribbon that is 3-4 inches long.

Page 9: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

Thread your needle, and thread itthrough the two or three eyeletsused to connect your pieces.Make sure both tails of the ribbonend up on the back side of thepieces.

Then tie a double knot.

Ribbon does not stay tied well onits own. To prevent the ribbonfrom coming loose, place a smalldrop of glue (we used Elmer's all-purpose glue in this tutorial) righton the knot of your ribbon.

Page 10: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

Then lightly rub glue with a papertowel to spread it on all sides ofthe knot, and remove any excessglue.

It is very important to allow theglue to dry completely. Then trimthe tails down, so they are about1/4" in length.

The second way to use theribbons is to tie the piecestogether with bows.

These bows are both functionaland decorative, and will be visibleon the outside of the final house. One way of tying upright bows isshown below. To learn thismethod, follow the steps below, and practice if desired. If youwish to tie the bows a differentway or use a different assemblymethod, feel free to skip thesesteps.

Page 11: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)

file:///fileserver/Files/Source/ELProjects/html/PR2238.html[11/7/2019 2:57:40 PM]

To tie a bow, first cut a piece ofribbon that is 6-9 inches long. The longer the ribbon piece is,the easier the bow is to tie. Forbest results, use a larger ribbonuntil you are very comfortableand confident in tying tiny bows.

Thread your needle, and thread itthrough the two or three eyeletsused to connect your pieces.

Make sure both tails of the ribbonend up on the front side of thepieces this time.

When tying a bow, it is veryimportant to make sure theribbon does not twist at all, so allthe parts of the bow lay flat. Firstsimply tie a single knot. Adjustthe tails until one is pointing up(we will call this the top tail) andone is pointing down (we will callthis the bottom tail). It is alsohelpful if the top tail is slightlylonger than the bottom tail.

Page 12: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)

file:///fileserver/Files/Source/ELProjects/html/PR2238.html[11/7/2019 2:57:40 PM]

Fold the bottom tail up to create asmall, bottom loop. The bottomtail should fall to the left of the toptail.

Then wrap the top tail counter-clockwise around the small, bottom loop. Do not pull it tight.

Fold the top tail, so it makesanother small loop.

Page 13: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)

file:///fileserver/Files/Source/ELProjects/html/PR2238.html[11/7/2019 2:57:40 PM]

Then slide that top small loopbehind the bottom small loop, and through the opening that wasmade when you wrapped the toptail around the bottom loop.

This will mean the top small loopwill be on the left, and the bottomsmall loop will be on the right.

Pull the loops of the bow totighten the center knot. Then pullon your tails and loops to adjustthe loops to your desired size.

Again, apply a small drop of glueon top of the center knot of thebow. Spread it with a papertowel, and allow it to drycompletely. Make sure to onlyuse a clear drying glue on thebows. For best results, test theglue on the end of your ribbon tomake sure it will not change thecolor or be visible once dry.

Page 14: 3D Gingerbread House (In-the-Hoop)towel to spread it on all sides of the knot, and remove any excess glue. It is very important to allow the glue to dry completely. Then trim the tails

After the glue is completely dry, check to make sure the bow feelssecure. Then trim the tails to thedesired length.

Now we will begin the assembly ofthe gingerbread house.

For best results, tie all the knotswith both pieces laying flatagainst each other, and fold thepieces upright after the knots aretied.

First, line the bottom edge of thefront door piece (file "a") up withthe line on the base piece (file"b"). Make sure the back of thefront door piece will be facing thehole of the base piece. Alsomake sure the base piece is frontside up.

Each ribbon will be going throughthree eyelets. Use 6 ribbons to tiethe two pieces together withdouble knots that end up againstthe back side of the front doorpiece (file "a").

Next, take the porch roof piece(file "c"), and match one long sideup with the top edge of the frontdoor piece (file "a").

Make sure the back side of theporch roof is against the frontside of the front door piece. Eachribbon will be going through twoeyelets. Use 5 ribbons to tie thetwo pieces together with doubleknots that end up against the
