Carolyn Wonderland

I’ve been waiting a long time for Carolyn Wonderland (Austin by way of Houston, TX) to grace us with her presence, here on the Coastal Bend. She will be playing a fundraiser for the Texas Homeless Network at the Ex-ecutive Surf Club on Wednesday, October 6th. Carolyn is such a powerful force on this earth, that I’m not just putting this show on my DO NOT MISS LIST, I’m pret-

The talent that exudes from this young lady is mind blowing. She not only sings with the prowess of Janis meets Etta, but also whistles, plays many scorch-ing guitars, lap steel, mandolin, accordion and piano. I’ve also heard her yodel and do bird calls.

I’ve known Carolyn since she was a pink haired teenag-er in the streets of Houston, playing a paisley Strat with

Three Chords and the Truth

And finally, it’s October. Didn’t think it would ever get here. There’s still plenty of great music out there for me to tell you about. Let’s roll...

Shoemaker Brothers

The Shoemaker Brothers (Los Angeles, CA) played the Tarpon Ice House on September 17th. This is a prime

example of how efficient the coconut telegraph works at its best. Ice House owner, Paul Fain, only booked this act 31 hours before the show. I had never seen the Shoe-maker Brothers before but had heard many Port A locals talk about how great they were when they blew through the island nearly two years ago. So, for almost two years I’ve been hearing about these guys and I’m thinking Larry Joe Taylor may have met his match for island popularity, if they ever show up again. So on Thursday, when Paul tells me that they’re playing the next night, I’m wondering how he’s going to get the word out in time. Plus, the weather channel has seven straight days of those clouds with lighting bolts on them forecasted. In my skepticism, I watched them write the Shoemaker’s name on the chalk board out front and post one notice on Facebook. That’s about all it took. Word got out like wild fire and despite the torrential down pours and short notice, the place packed out with local adoring fans. And for good reason...these guys are the butter.

The boys are back in town...The Shoemaker Brothers are four exceptionally talent-

ed siblings that probably complete each other’s sentenc-es. Samuel, Gabriel, Nathanael and Daniel grew up in the Pacific Northwest with parents that insisted that they all take music lessons at an early age. These boys are all equally proficient on guitar, violin, drums, bass, cel-lo and viola and trade instruments around on stage like reversible jackets. And, the music that ensues is noth-ing less than spectacular. They all have perfect pitch and harmonize with voices that only angels can claim. All of their material is original and their songs show a maturity far beyond their young ages. It took me all of one song to see why the legions of Shoemaker fans in Port Aransas have embraced “The Boys” with complete acceptance. It was a joy to see so many locals flock to hear this band and reassured my faith that the musical taste in Port A is alive and well and better than most.

Catch a rising star...I can’t see the Shoemakers doing what they do without

jumping to the bigs pretty quickly. They play the major-ity of their shows around the Los Angeles area and it’s only a matter of time until we start seeing their names nationally. These boys have the sound and the look and each one of them is talented enough to be stars in their own right. They have a special affection for Port A as their manager, Ted O’Neill, lives here. Also, they have a certain loyalty to the Ice House for giving them their first exposure when they wandered on the island as unknowns. They obviously loved playing that venue. We can only hope that it won’t be so long until their next appearance here. Let their manager know that we’d love to see them back ([email protected]).

fronted the popular Texas roots band with a Louisiana attitude, Delta Roux. Milligan is often compared to the late Junior Medlow with his passionate stage presence.

The left handed bass player, Leland Parks, also comes with pedigree hav-ing played with The Cobras, Miss Lavelle White, Alan Haynes and Preacher Keen. Parks is also the president of the Austin Blues Soci-ety and partners with the Doc Blue re-cord label (TuTu Jones, Pat Boyack, Sonny Boy Terry, Long John Hunt-er, John McVey, Walter T. Higgs, etc). I was pleasantly surprised by the strong musicianship of the Altar Boy guitarist, Scott Unzicker, who showed flair when needed but also

laid back when needed, showing his understanding that “less is more” with his soulful passages. Milligan and the Altar Boys treated us to a solid show of original tunes and powerful blues. This is a very good blues band with

thousands of miles of roadwork to their credit. Check them out at docbluesrecords.com.

A Cobras reunion...

Another pleasant surprise was when the founding mem-ber of the Cobras, Rodney Craig, showed up in the Back Porch crowd and sat in for a couple of songs. The Cobras were the house band at Antone’s in Austin when I used to work there in the 70’s. And, when the Cobra line-up was Junior Medlow (vocals), Leland Parks (bass), Rod-ney Craig (drums and vocals), Derek O’Brien (guitar) and Smokin’ Joe Sublett (sax), they used to play the old Merie’s Malibu where Neptune’s is now (circa 1979-80). By the way, Derek O’Brien, the highly acclaimed record producer for Antone’s Records and smoking blues gui-tarist in his own right, got his job with the Cobras when Stevie Ray Vaughan left the band to start Triple Threat Revue with W.C. Clark and Lou Ann Barton. Junior Medlow took over the vocal duties in the Cobras when singer, Paul Ray, developed throat problems about the same time. So, it was like old home week seeing Leland and Rodney on stage again here in Port A.

Carlton Pride & Mighty Zion

Carlton Pride & Mighty Zion (San Marcos, TX) played the Executive Surf Club on September 18th and the Salty Dog on September 19th. I attended both shows. Carlton is the son of country music legend, Charlie Pride and the only reggae act to ever play the Grand Old Opry. He started out as a recording engineer and sound tech for his father. Pride formed Mighty Zion in the mid 90’s when he left Dallas and set up shop in San Marcos and the band headlined Bob Marley festivals nationwide from 1996- 2003. His CD, Ruff Stuff (2000), was re-corded in Jamaica with Bunny Wailer, Culture, Burn-ing Spear, Culture and Alpha Blondy. It also features a duet with his father on the reggae version of Kiss an Angel Good Morning and is very cool. Pride has shared stages with The Wailers, Black Uhuru, Yellowman and String Cheese Incident.

Rain or shine, the show must go on...It was a soggy, soggy weekend on the Coastal Bend on

the 18th and 19th and weather was a factor at both of these shows. Pride’s show in Port A on the Sunday was a benefit for Capt. John Stark and was originally booked at the Tar-pon Ice House but got moved to the Salty Dog at the last minute because of the rain. At the show in Cor-pus on the Saturday night, they couldn’t use the venue’s stage and had to play on the floor, on the side of the Surf Club where they were protect-ed from rain. Atten-dance at both shows clearly suffered be-

cause of the weather...but the shows still went on. I had never seen Carlton play before and a little rain wasn’t going to stop me (although the drive to Corpus got a little hairy at times when it was raining sideways and J.D. Moore was driving us in zero visibility). But, it was worth the peril.

Pride’s show is straight ahead, real deal reggae with lit-tle or no gimmicks. His band consists of Zeke Bene-nate (bass), Johnny Radelat (drums) and Bryon Felt-ner (keys). They didn’t bring their two horn players with them for these two gigs but the tight four piece band more than made up for it. I especially enjoyed his reg-gae version of the Hendrix classic, And the Wind Cried Mary. Despite the low number of people at the shows, their music kept the dance floor busy all night. Carlton Pride has a barrel full of talent and his band is a lot of fun to hang with. They will be playing the Padre Burger Company on October 9th.
