ISSUE ONEWelcome to 3C - the very

first and very exciting Global

Youth Action newsletter!

3C is put together by the Global

Collective, a group of young

people from around the country

involved in the Global Youth

Action project. They want to

share with you some of the great

action they’ve been taking to

change their world and the world

around them.

Young people taking action for a just

and sustainable world...

Page 2: 3C - Connect, Challenge, Change

The Global Collective helps

to promote active youths of

today and take part in youth

action in local groups. We

cover many issues facing the

world today – fair trade, human rights, gun

crime plus many more. We look at the aspects

of what may be the cause and paths that can

be taken to create solutions.

We develop and deliver Global Youth Action projects

– some of which we hope you’ll enjoy reading about

in 3C! Our aim is to put our views and ideas into

action, so we can make a positive contribution and

help change the way people think. Taking part also

makes us more aware of the world we live in.

And why do we do it? The real question is why

wouldn’t we? There is so much going on out there

and so many people who sit back and think “well,

it has nothing to do with me,” when in fact global

issues affect everyone and everything around us.

We’re part of this project because we care about

these affects and believe we can make a difference.

It’s important to us to try and make a better world

to live in, for us and future generations.

Ashley Whitham, 15, Preston

We’re the Global Collective united together,

We travel we meet no matter the weather,

The people that think it’s wrong should join together,

Come join in be as light as a feather,

Child soldiers at 8yrs old,

They’re not that strong but they try to be bold,

They’re taken away from their mum they’re told,

But they’re too young to know what’s to unfold,

They shoot people down,

They take over the town,

Their leader sits there wearing a crown,

Cos now he feels the king of the town,

Global Collective we wanna cut it out,

But politicians don’t listen no doubt,

We wanna spread this message far about,

We should go in yeah scream and shout,

We should let all this anger out,

I think it’s wrong that they hold a gun,

They get too involved to know what they’ve done,

They think its right,

They think its fun,

But once they die they forgot what begun.

CHILD SOLDIERS RAPBy Anthony Gladman, 17, Wakefield & Mark, 16, Leeds

“I feel passionate about Child Soldiers

because I think they deserve a chance in life,

just like I have. I feel really concerned about

how they are treated. This rap can make a

difference by helping people understand the

main reasons why this is happening and

the problems causing young and vulnerable

children to go into horrendous situations. It’s also one of

a kind coz me and Anthony made it!”

Did you know?.. Child Soldiers

– There are hundreds of thousands

of child soldiers fighting around

the world, some as young as nine,

and girls as well as boys

– Some children join up as a means

of survival after seeing family

members tortured or killed.

Others join up because of poverty

and lack of work or educational

opportunities. (Coalition to Stop

the Use of Child Soldiers)

‘UNDERSIZE ME’ Film Project

Did you know?.. Slavery

– There are approximately 27 million

slaves in the world today

– Most people when they think of slavery think of the transatlantic

slave trade which was abolished in the early 1800s, however, the

reality is that slavery exists today. Modern slavery includes forced

labour, forced marriage, trafficking and child labour.

On route to destruct

On route to deduct

On route to depress

Ma life is a mess

Why ya judging?

Why do ya look?

Think you’re tough and high,

Showing off with your diamonds,

Die man

You don’t understand the process that export to you a jewel

of mercy,

Slave labour that made them cry man no other choice but for

them to die man,

Slave ship silence……..

Battle commence

Bravery unnoticed

Troop underestimate

Misjudge, mistake

Now I aren’t fake

Solid wood barracks of the ship now where we prayed is

forgotten, sealed,

Out to sail & I aren’t no pirate

Think you’re boss

Think your rich think your buff

But then again there’s better looking

And you never got a look into reality to life

Through a porthole controlled by religion

Let’s face it

It’s not fair treated differently

Colour of ma skin the state of ma hair

I’m a 1 of a kind individual

I aren’t like Tony Blair

Resign coz the country is getting out of control

Forgotten Britain on the doll

Plastic police men on the patrol

They can’t see a world out of their neighbourhood

To be continued...

Inspired by the film ‘Super Size Me’

Sarah and Londiee vow to live on the

Global Poverty Line of less than $2 a

day for a whole week!

“The global issue Londiee and I are

highlighting for our project is Poverty.

By doing this project we hope to raise

awareness and make people realise that the world has the

resources to resolve it and that little changes can help put

a stop to it altogether.

What makes it stand out is that it’s a video diary made by

young people. Rather than telling people what poverty is

like we’re showing our audience first-hand. This helps you

feel more involved and that has more of an effect.”

Did you know?.. Poverty

- The poorest 40 % of the world’s population earn 5 %

of global income. The richest 20 % earn 75% of world

income. (United Nations Development Programme)

- According to UNICEF, 26,500-30,000 children die

each day due to poverty.

GLOBAL YOUTH ACTION VIDEO

WORDS OF WISDOMIntro by Roshni Mistry,

15, Loughborough

The Global Youth Action video is all

about us as young people putting our

views across about global issues and

how we think we can help make a posi-

tive contribution to society. It shows that

we are passionate about the world and want to make a change

to help for a better future. This video is

a good example of how young people

can join together to make a stand for

what is right.

We hope to inspire other young people

to connect to global issues, challenge

things and make changes for a just

and sustainable world.

This picture was taken at a Global Youth

Action residential in the Lake District.

The game was a role-play in which different

teams of campaigners had to convince

the government to spend their budget on

water, instead of weapons. I took charge of

the posters aspect; this is one of the posters

that I made. It was a quick drawing, but it

gets the point across.

We didn’t win the game in the end,

but we had a lot of fun doing it!”
