NOVEMBER, THE MONTH OF ALL SOULS

If you would like to pray in a special way for your

loved ones, you may inscribe their names on the

envelopes in our pews and bring them to the Parish

Office at any time, and we will place them on the

Altar to be included in our prayers during the entire

month.

O God, who willed that your Only Begotten Son, having conquered death, should pass over into the realm of heaven, grant, we pray, to your departed servants that, with the mortality of this life overcome, they may gaze eternally on

you, their Creator and Redeemer. ...

P URGATORY. The place or condition in which

the souls of the just are purified after death and

before they can enter heaven. They may be purified

of the guilt of their venial sins, as in this life, by an

act of contrition deriving from charity and performed

with the help of grace. This sorrow does not,

however, affect the punishment for sins, because in

the next world there is no longer any possibility of

merit. The souls are certainly purified by atoning for

the temporal punishments due to sin by their willing

acceptance of suffering imposed by God. The

sufferings in purgatory are not the same for all, but

proportioned to each person’s degree of sinfulness.

Moreover, these sufferings can be lessened in

duration and intensity through the prayers and good

works of the faithful on earth. Nor are the pains

incompatible with great peace and joy, since the poor

souls deeply love God and are sure they will reach

heaven. As members of the Church Suffering, the

souls in purgatory can intercede for the person on

earth, who are therefore encouraged to invoke their

aid. Purgatory will not continue after the general

judgment, but its duration for any particular soul

continues until it is free from all guilt and

punishment. Immediately on purification the soul is

assumed into heaven.

(Etym. Latin purgatio, cleansing, purifying.)

MINISTRY FAIRE NEXT WEEKEND

St. Sebastian’s will hold a “Ministry Faire” in the

Sunday”, so come and see!

TODAY’S GOSPEL

At that time, Jesus

came to Jericho and

intended to pass

through the town.

Now a man there

named Zacchaeus,

who was a chief tax

collector and also a

wealthy man, was

seeking to see who

Jesus was; but he

could not see him

because of the

crowd, for he was

short in stature. So

he ran ahead and

climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who

was about to pass that way. When he reached the

place, Jesus looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, come

down quickly, for today I must stay at your house.”

And he came down quickly and received him with

joy. When they all saw this, they began to grumble,

saying, “He has gone to stay at the house of a

sinner.” But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the

Lord, “Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall

give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from

anyone I shall repay it four times over.” And Jesus

said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house

because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.

For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save

what was lost.” —Luke 19:1-10

An excerpt from Heaven, the Heart’s Deepest

Longing by Peter Kreeft:

T he reason the saint’s desires are satisfied and he

has joy is not that God is a divine dispensing

machine and the saint has learned to press the right

buttons but that he has learned to desire “the one

thing necessary”, God’s will, and therefore always

gets what he desires, for God’s will is always done.

“Thy will be done” is the infallible road to total joy.

Excerpts from Everything You Ever Wanted to

Know About Heaven but Never Dreamed of

Asking by Peter Kreeft:

Will We Be Free to Sin in Heaven?

What do we mean by “freedom”? Sometimes (1)

political freedom, freedom from tyranny, oppression,

or the denial of our rights; sometimes (2) physical

power, ability to act, freedom from hindrance; and

sometimes (3) spiritual power to choose (“free

will”). Of course we will have all three in Heaven,

but why won’t we be able to sin, since we will have

free will?

Because we will also have a fourth freedom, the

most important one of all: freedom from sin, from

what makes us not ourselves. We will be free to be

the true selves God designed us to be, free to be

determined by God. This determination does not

remove our freedom but is our freedom, … we are

objects to God… we too, therefore, are true only

when we conform to God’s knowledge of us, God’s

artistic plan for our identity. Since our highest

freedom means freedom to be ourselves, we are most

free when we are most obedient to God’s will, which

expresses His idea of us. Thus freedom and

obedience coincide. To obey God is to be free in the

most radical sense: free to be me, free from

inauthenticity, free from false being, free from the

alien within, not just free from the alien without, the

oppressor. …

The answer to our question, then, is that “freedom to

sin” is a self-contradictory concept. Sin is

inauthenticity and freedom is authenticity; sin is our

false self and freedom is our true self. Sin is part of

Hell and freedom is part of Heaven. The question

cannot be resolved, only dissolved, because it

confuses Hell with Heaven.
