About the Neve Harms Award…The Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame Neve Harms Award, formerly thePeoria Advertising and Selling Club’s Annual Meritorious Service to SportsAward, was named the Neve Harms Award in 1966 and for a very good rea-son.

As Director of Proctor Recreation Center, Harms observed the need for allyouths to experience participation in sports activities, and not just the fewwho excelled. He, therefore, adopted a firm policy which assured that allyouths would have an opportunity to play in games of the various sports con-trolled by Proctor Center. This plan met with much success and certainly withacceptance by parents whose children became more interested in sport ac-tivities at Proctor and consequently made good use of their free time.

Neve carried through this policy when he was appointed Superintendent ofthe Peoria City Recreation Department which later became part of the PeoriaPark District. In addition, he also developed a system of recognition for allyouths so that each young person could feel good about his or her efforts.

This kind of interest in all youths regardless of ability came from a most com-petitive and outstanding athlete. Neve was a four-sport player at Manual HighSchool and a three-sport letter winner at Bradley University. He was a mem-ber of the 1929 Manual High School State Championship Basketball team.

Neve Harms Meritorious Service to Sports Award Winners:JERRY & ELAINE RIEBLING

For four decades Jerry and Elaine have volunteered their time and effort to benefitthe runners competing in events within the Tri-County. A sports history of the peoria area

As you look at our newly installed plaques aroundthe outer concourse of the Civic Center, you will bestruck by the great individuals and teams honoredby this organization over the past three decades. Indeed, our collection of plaques is, in itself, an areahistory of sports.

To continue our success, we rely on individuals likeyou. Your continued input is essential. You can nom-inate a sports team or an outstanding athlete by writ-ing a brief account of accomplishments and mailingit to any of the two dozen persons on our Board of Directors.

Keep a few things in mind. No individual has everbeen inducted into this Hall simply on the basis of agreat high school career. Your nominee should havegone on to an impressive college or professional career. Please give this some thought. Have wemissed an individual or a team? If so, please bringour oversight to our attention.
