The small but determined efforts started by Prof. A.G.Billoo (Sitara-e-Imtiaz), for community developmentin 1979 in the form of HANDS (Health And NutritionDevelopment Society), have now turned out into oneof the largest not for profit organization at national andinternational levels. HANDS has travelled through along and striving journey of 35 years under the guidanceof its chairman ,efforts of its staff and support ofcommunity development partners. Today HANDSstands as one of the leading civil society organizationof the country with a work span in all the 4 provincesof Pakistan. HANDS registered itself as charityorganization in UK in 2014 as non profit organizationin companies act 2006 of England and Wales. LaterHANDS International established its offices in LondonUnited Kingdom (UK), Kathmandu Nepal, CalaisFrance.

HANDS started its formal journey of intervention froma public sector hospital in Karachi as Health AndNutrition Project in 1979 lead by the then head of thedepartment of paediatrics Civil Hospital Karachi, Prof.A. G. Billoo (Sitara-e-Imtiaz). He was seriouslyconcerned about the poor patients coming from Karachirural in miserable conditions.The first step towardscommunity development was initiation of a project inwhich a Primary Health Care center was establishedin a remote village, more than 40 kilometers awayfrom city center. The interns of the professor followedhis vision to develop "Healthy Educated ProsperousPakistan" (HANDS vision in initial days), gradually theproject transformed into the organization called HealthAnd Nutrition Development Society (HANDS) andHANDS International. In 35 years HANDS has evolvedas a model of community development. This integratedmodel comprise of key programs of Social Mobilization,Gender & Development, Human & InstitutionalDevelopment, Monitoring Evaluation & Research,Information Communication Resource and Advocacy,Health Promotion, Education & Literacy, LivelihoodEnhancement, Infrastructure Development EnergyWater & Shelter, Disaster Management and SocialMarketing.

HANDS Brief Profile 2014-15HANDS has a network of 31 offices across the countryand has access to 22 million population of more than22,000 villages/ settlement in 47 districts of Pakistan.These offices are supported by 5,691 medium andsmall size organizations' network in Pakistan.

Management Structure:HANDS is governed by 12 members elected"Governing Board" who are volunteers and are leadby Chairman of the organization. Chief Executive isdefecto member of the governing board as well. Boardprovides policy guideline and follow the managementto pursue management policies in the spirit oforganization's vision.

The board is comprised of professionals from differentsectors, philanthropist, community representatives andex-employees of HANDS. There are four tiers inmanagement structure, first tier is the HigherManagement Committee which is top managementand comprise of 4 executives and a Chief Executive.The second tier is "Steering Committee" which compriseof 12 General Managers (GMs) and the 04 seniorexecutives are also memeber of the steering committee.The GMs are responsible for operation of differentproject activities of their program under the leadershipof Chief Executive and senior Executives. All thedistricts heads that is Districts Executive Managers(DEMs) and members of Steering Committee form a3rd tier called Management Committee. The fourth tierexists at district level called the District ManagementCommittee which comprise of district project staff,DEM and is chaired by District Patron andrepresentative of head office staff. HANDS at presenthave more than 1900 full time staff and more than amillion Community Based Volunteers (CBVs) whoparticipate at "Monthly Community level forums" leadby Chairperson of Community Based Organization(CBO) and respective district staff participate as defectomember in these forums.

Management Certification:HANDS is certified by Pakistan Center for Philanthropy(PCP) and is tax exempted by Income tax departmentof government of Pakistan. HANDS has alsosuccessfully completed the Institutional ManagementCertification Program (IMCP) of USAID formanagement standards. We are accredited withEuropean Union and have central contractor registrationwith US Goverment (DUNS No.). HANDS also possessmembership with Humanitarian AccounabilityPartnership (HAP) and IUCN (International Union ofConservation of Nature).

Experience in project administration andfinancial management:

HANDS has successfully managed 513 projects duringthe last 22 years. Finance Department is equippedwith qualified personnel working in a computerizedaccounting software (online in all districts) throughSidat Hyder Financials. HANDS is currently managinga budget of approximately Rs. 1,703 million.

HANDS development process value is based on anunderstanding of roles and responsibilities, whichinclude accountability, ethnic impartiality and effectiveparticipation. We strive for value of creativity andinnovation, which is the hallmark of all our efforts. Ourbelief is that every citizen of this country should haveaccess to their basic rights and should discharge theirobligation with same fervour.

Networking with Civil Society Organizations:HANDS has chair of �108 National Organizations�network under the umbrella of �Scaling Up Nutrition(SUN) Civil Society Organization Alliance (CSA)�.HANDS is also holding the chair of �South AsiaCoordinator for People Health Movement (PHM).HANDS is also a member of National HumanitarianNetwork (NHN) and Pakistan Humanitarian Forum(PHF). HANDS is also a member of National DisasterRisk Reduction Forum (DRR) and Human ResourceDevelopment Network (HRDN).

HANDS Strategy for Vision 2020:Considering HANDS 35 years of life, it was felt that along term strategty shoud be developed. Therefore aseries of consultation meetings were conducted withall the stakeholders of organization from communityto the Governing Board. After six months of meetings

HANDS Integrated Development Best Practice ModelsIn the preceding years HANDS has successfully completed numerous projects and the experience from each

project has enabled as to develop several best practices model of services and trainings. Each program

component of HANDS has specific set of best practices services models and best practices training models.

These models have been successfully applied and can be modified or adjusted to meat the requirement of

any new project. Besides, few new and innovative models have also been introduced in precedings as the

scope and span of work has extended. The achievements of each best practice service and training models

of each program include:

Infrastructure Development EnergyWASH and Shelter (IDEAS)IDEAS is committed to provide good quality

infrastructure to the target population. IDEAS program

is a series of projects, based on the foundation of field

tested best practices and proven capabilities. The

innovative models by HANDS IDEAS are low cost,

durable, socially acceptable and environment friendly.

The best practice service models:Drinking Water facilities, Street Pavement Facilities,

Sanitation, Hand wash Facility, Low Cost Shelter,

Irrigation Schemes, Household Technologies, Disaster

Risk Reduction Schemes, Communication Schemes,

Social Sector Schemes, Alternate Energy Schemes,

Annaj Ghar.

The best practice training models:Training on Water Sanitation & Hygiene and Training

of Masons and Community Members on Construction

of Shelters with Lime Stabilized Soil.

Achievements:l Overall 330 drinking water facilities were constructed

including under water storages and ground surface

drinking water storages. Besides 06 water supply

lines and 02 filter plants were also constructed. 3955

hand pumps have also been installed.

l Overall 161 street pavements have been laid down.l Overall 240 sanitation schemes have been

completed so far under this model.l Total 3582 emergency latrines have been

constructed as part of sanitation model.l So far 13,021 permanent latrines have been

constructed in different target areas to improve the

sanitary conditions.l Overall 1158 hand washing facilities have been

constructed so far in schools for the children.l Overall 75,805 shelters have been successfully

constructed in preceding years and delivered to the

communities in different districts of Sindh,

Balochistan and Southern Punjab. 22,658 families

have also been provided roofing kits for their houses.

Thus, overall 98,463 families were benefited by

HANDS in providing shelter under this model.

HANDS under this intervention has invested nearly

2.5 billion in large since 2011.l 2,202 irrigation schemes have been completed in

preceding years including tube wells and water

courses/channels.l IDEAS program has so far successfully made and

provided 217 Naadi (biosand filter) to the families

in target communities.l Overall 27,148 Portable Ceramic Water Filters have

been provided to the families in target villages.l Overall 7,508 Energy Efficient Stoves have been

made in target communities.l 02 protection walls have been constructed for

protection in coastal area.l 01 jetty has been successfully constructed and

handed over to the community.l Total 1,214 link roads have been completed in

various districts.l Overall achievement is construction of 288

bridges/culverts in target areas.l 1,304 schools were renovated during the last 04

years of intervention.l 150 Transit Shelter Schools (TSS) and 25 Child

Friendly Spaces (CFS) have been constructed.l So far 60,228 solar light have been provided to the

l Trained 681 Government teachers on ECDl Trained 395 SMCs on school management and

prepared school development and improvement

plansl Established play area in 227 schoolsl Provided Supplementary Teaching and Learning

government primary schools through SBEP-SRP

program.l Trained 4,292 government primary school teachers

of class one and two on "Reading Skill

Development".l Collected data of teachers and students from 975

government primary schools through SBEP-SRP

program.l Provided support to Mir Masoom Shah Library at

Sukkur, to develop reading habits in parents and

students (with focus of early grades students)l Overall 527 ALCs have been established and 527

ALC teachers trained. Total 21,059 learners have

been enrolled in the ALCs.l The Health Action School service model has been

applied in 220 schools. A total of 28,775 students

have been benefited through these schools in

previous years. 861 male and female teachers have

also been trained in this model.l During the preceding years, 568 model schools

have been developed in the School Health

Screening model. The number of students enrolled

in these schools were 42000. The personnel trained

for this model included 568 teachers, 57 health

care providers and 30 Government officials (In

charges).l School Nutrition model has been applied in 346

schools in target areas. The other accomplishment

of this model include opening of bank accounts of

346 schools, training of 508 teachers and 10 master

trainers. Monitoring of height and weight of 50,000

students was done and same number were also

provided food.l Overall 1,663 schools have been adopted under

this model, more than 0.37 million students and

nearly 9,762 teachers have been benefited through

this model. The material supplied to the school

included stationary, teaching material and bag

including school renovation.l Total 21 HANDS Academies have been established

and 1794 students have been benefited through

Family Reading Program. 58 teachers are trained

on ECE and different subjects (e.g: Math, English

and Science). Total 21 CBOs/SMCs are trained on

school management, record keeping, monitoring

and social mobilization etc.l Life Skill Based Education training model has been

communities including 08 solar panel systems at

HANDS District Complexesl 500 Annaj Ghar (seed bins) have been constructed

for the communities to preserve food grains in the

target areas.l 04 trainings have been conducted on WASH with

a participation of 74 people.l Total 360 masons have been trained on use of lime

in construction of flood resilient shelters.

Education and Literacy ProgramThe ultimate goal of Education and Literacy Program

is to promote education for human and institutional

development. The primary focus of the program is

provision of primary education, capacity building of

teachers and strengthening of School Management

Committee (SMC).

The best practice service models:Parwarish Markaz, Early Childhood Development,

Adult Literacy Centre (ALC), Health Action School

(HAS), School Health Screening, School Nutrition

Program, HANDS Adopt a School, HANDS Academy

The best practice training models:Life Skill Based Education Training (LSBE), Family

Reading Program, Adult Literacy Training (ALT), Multi-

grade Teaching, Art and Craft Training, Early Childhood

Education and Development (ECD) Training, Health

Action School Training

Achievements:l HANDS has established Parwarish Markaz in district

Hyderabad, Matiari, Karachi (Rural) and Badin. Till

date 51 Parwarish Markaz have been established

and 51 Parwarish Workers have been trained with

total enrollment of 1367 children, including 904 girls

and 463 boys.l Established 681 ECD classes in 227 Government

schools of Sindh.

The best practice training models:Community Midwifery (CMW) Training School, Training

of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), Psychosocial

Wellbeing Training, IUCD Training, Community Health

Workers (MARVI Workers) Client Centred Training,

SRH (Sexual Reproductive Health) Trainings, Client

Centered Approach (CCA) Training for Health Care

Providers,

Achievements:l More than 1600 trained Marvi workers in 11 districts

throughout Pakistan.l 4,207 assistive devices were provided to the PWDs

in 05 Union Councils i.e. Ibrahim Hyderi, Rehri, Landhi

Mashke and Awaran.l Orthotic devices and prosthesis were provided to 395

PWDs, including hearing aids to 876, vision glasses

to 1,103, wheel chairs to 159, crutches (Besakhee)

to 55, walkers to 36, white canes to 19, toilet seats to

167, Cerebral Palsy (CP) Chairs for 26 Children and

tricycles to 25 PWDs. Overall 2891 PWDs were

provided with support through this service model.l 119 family members of the bedridden Person with

Disabilities (PWD's) were trained as attendants.l 150 teachers of Bin Qasim town were trained on

inclusive education.l 83 PWDs were trained and supported to establish

their enterprise.l 77 Awareness raising sessions were attended by

64354 PWDs and their family members on

genetically transmitted diseases, family marriages,

health and hygiene, reproductive health, care during

pregnancy, vaccination, family planning and

breastfeeding etc.l 16 private secondary healthcare facilities have so far

been identified and strengthened for EmONC services.l Overall more than 4,305 high risk cases related to

maternal, ANC, PNC and neo-natal health have been

identified and managed through this project.l Conduction of 1,545 deliveries have been done

including caesarian sections.l Overall 1909 neonates have been managed so far.l Overall 8,960 NARI referral forms were distributed in

the target communities.l FM Radio message was developed and relayed to

introduce NARI referral voucher (number of times as

per agreement with local FM radio) in the target area.l Through this model, HANDS till date has provided

support to 5,562 health/population/facilities/workers

under Public Private Partnership, which included:

Headquarter Hospitals, 34 Rural Health Centres, 326

Basic Health Units, 21 Maternal and Child Health

applied in total 153 schools and 9486 girl students,

17254 boys students and 153 teachers have also

been trained.l 01 training was conducted with 03 participants. A

total of 90 learners have been benefited through

this model in previous years.l Overall 18 trainings have been conducted and 527

participants were trained in Adult Literacy Training

model.l So far 05 trainings have been conducted and 106

participants were trained in Multi Grade Teaching

model.l Under Arts and Craft, 11 trainings were conducted

and 265 participants were trained during preceding

years.l Overall 68 trainings have been conducted Early

Child Development model and 909 community

teachers have been trained in these trainings. A

total of 298 trainings have been conducted for

Government teachers and total of 1580 Government

teachers have been trained.l 29 trainings have been conducted for government

school teachers and 861 teachers were trained

under Health Action School model.

Health ProgramHANDS Health Promotion program include integration

of health interventions with other social development

initiatives. The services are provided in coordination

with local Community Based Organizations (CBOs).

Livelihood Enhancement ProgramLivelihood Enhancement program focuses on

development of communities through income generation

opportunities, skill enhancement and overall improvement

in livelihood of the underprivileged. The program has two

in its intervention areas through this model.l Till now 2,522 men & women have been benefited

through provision of Livestock for income generation.l There have been 5,234 beneficiaries of poultry

package where they were provided with birds &

feed for income generation.l In the preceding years 2,764 community members

l HANDS has so far established 82 Birthing Stations

for provision of RH services to the communities.l The Tele Health Service model is in pilot phase and

is being tested for delivering health services in

district Awaran in Balochistan. Certain sessions

have been successful ly conducted with

clients/patients and HANDS hospital Jamkanda.Now

HANDS is making its efforts to link it further with

the Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi to

ensure the quality health services.l Total number of social marketing product units sold

were 7,573,726 and during previous year, the

amount recovered from the sale was Rs. 8.6 million.l HANDS established 02 Community Midwifery schools

including 01 in Karachi Rural (Jamkanda Hospital)

and 01 in Matiari district (THQ Hala). Both schools

were registered with PNC and hold a good reputation

among the Midwifery schools in the country. About

434 CMWs were enrolled, out of which 360

successfully completed their training. Moreover, 74

(17.05%) candidates were either dropped out or could

not succeed in the examination.l Overall 12780 TBAs have been trained.l 30 professionals from 26 NGOs have been trained

by HANDS and another 201 professionals of 78 NGOs

were trained through step down training.l 185 participants have been trained on IUCD insertion

in 07 trainings.l 132 trainings including refresher trainings have been

conducted for MARVI workers and 1,527 MARVIs

have been trained so far.l HANDS also conducted 35 trainings of 882 participants

in Reproductive Health.l 161 trainings have been conducted for HCPs attended

by 2,646 participants.

l 68,399 trainings have been conducted so far on

different topics by Livelihood Enhancement (on-

promotes economic empowerment with special focus

on women. The program focuses on provision of skill

Achievements:l Overall 205 camps have been established till date

which provided shelter to 98463 disaster victims

since 2010.l So far 228,412 families have received food rations

during the disasters in preceding years. Besides

distribution food ration, 51,375 WaWa MuM sachet

(Nutrition supplement) were also distributed ACHA

MuM among the malnourished in Tharparker district

during the drought.l HANDS has established 13 Disaster Risk

Management Centres in Sukkur, Thatta, Hyderabad,

Jamshoro, Matiari, Umerkot, Mirpur Khas, Sanghar,

Badin, Jacobabad, Karachi, Ghotki and Muzafar

Garh.l HANDS has established 02 networks in Northern

and Southern districts of Sindh which represent

about 2000 CBOs. HANDS has also led a

consortium of NGOs established by Relief and

Rehabilitation Department, Government of Sindh.

Sensitization Short Session, Women Mobilization and

Leadership Training.

Achievements:l Implementation of gender policy is a continuous

process as it is an integral part of every project.

The policy has been implemented in all projects

including 195 projects in the recent preceding years.l Sexual harassment policy was implemented and

practiced in 31 district offices of the organization

with 1900 professional staff. This policy was also

implemented in 5331 Community Based

Organiztions (CBOs).l In preceding years, HANDS GAD program organized

42 events as part of advocacy campaign which

were attended by 5175 participants from different

walks of life.l GAD program has gained membership of many

women networks such as Joint Action Committee,

Pakistan Reproductive Health Network, UN Women

Society Advisory Group, Working Group for Women

- AKU, Gender Task Force - UN Women and GBV

Sub Cluster - UNFPA, Gender Coalition - Aurat

Foundation, and USAID at national level.l The program team has designed, printed and

disseminated 90169 units of BCC material including

posters, pamphlets, leaflets and banners.l The number of messages relayed through FM radio

was 1185.l 15 Focus Group Discussions related to BCC were

conducted.l 22310 awareness raising sessions were conducted

with around 600,000 participants.l About 500 Interactive Theatres have so far been

conducted for BCC on social / gender issues.l For financial and economical empowerment / stability

of women, 400 destitute women residents of 2

shelter homes in Karachi were provided skill trainings

as per their need/requirement.l Under this training model 48 trainings have been

conducted and 1620 professionals have been

trained from public, private and non-profit sector.l Overall 827 short training sessions on gender

sensitization have been conducted with 24,726

participants.l The number of trainings conducted on Women

Mobilization and Leadership was 148 with 3428

participants.

Disaster Management programDisaster management aims to reduce, or avoid the

potential losses from hazards, assure prompt and

temporary learning centre (schools) and food

distribution services. HANDS has contributed upto

50 million Nepali Rupees in this intervention.

3. 2014 Flood Emergency in Southern and

Northern Punjab:

Immediately Emergency Response was initiated to

the effected population by providing transport, health

and temporary shelter services. The early recovery

intervention initiated with rehabilitation of water,

food, sanitation, education, street pavement and

small bridge facilities. More than 7000 families in

6 districts including Muzafargarh, Rajanpur, Sialkot,

Chiniot, Mandi Bahaudin and Jhang were benefited.

More than Rupees 15 million of has been contributed

in this response.

4. 2014 North Waziristan Emergency Response

(IDPs):

Emergency Response was initiated within 36 hours

to provide assistance to Internally Displace PeopIes

(IDPs) at Bannu. HANDS intervention comprised

of health services to more than 10,000 beneficiaries

with the cost of Rs. 2.3 million.

5. 2014-2016 Tharparkar Drought Response:

Emergency Response was initiated in March, 2014

at 02 districts of Southern Sindh that is Tharparkar

and Umerkot. Relief packages was provided to

6,000 families. Later 0.8 million population were

benefited with Community Based Management of

Acute Malnutrition (CMAM). HANDS has contributed

more than Rs. 195 million in this intervention.

6. 2013 Awaran Balochistan Earthquake Response:

Emergency response was initiated within 8 hours

& comprehensive relief package was provided in

hard conditions and conflicted areas to more than

10,000 families in three districts Awaran, Panjgur

and Kech. The intervention was comprised of

health, education, shelter, livelihood and water

sanitation services. HANDS contributed more than

Rs. 250 million in these areas.

7. 2012 Northern Sindh, South Punjab and

Balochistan Rain Emergency Response:

Emergency response was initiated in 06 districts of

Sindh, Punjab and Balochistan which includes

Jacobabad, Kashmore, Ghotki, Shikarpur, Rajanpur

and Jaferabad. Emergency relief package was

provided to 27000 families at the cost of Rs. 46

million.

8. 2011 Southern Sindh Rain Emergency

Response:

Emergency response was initiated in 8 districts of

Southern Sindh, including Umerkot, Badin, Sanghar,

Matiari, Shaheed Benazirabad, Mirpurkhas, Thatta

& Jamshoro . 29000 families were reached. Total

l Overall 3,706 medical camps have been held and

376,555 patients / clients have been managed in

medical camps for different health issues.l Overall 59 Child Friendly Spaces (CFS) and 150

Transit Shelter School (TSS) have been established

so far along with rehabilitation of 1065 schools with

wash room and hand washing facilities in disaster

affected areas. These schools were also provided

bags, copies, sports item & stationary.l Total 1325 patients have been received /availed

the ambulance servicel HANDS is providing services through Ambulance

Network in 12 different districts of Sindhl 30 trainings have been conducted on camp

management and more than 400 organization

professionals have been trained in preceding years.l 02 trainings have been conducted in last couple of

years and 50 participants have been trained for

Drought Mitigation which includes risk assessment &

management.l 42 trainings have been conducted till date attended

by 1014 participants. 264 step down trainings have

also been conducted by CBOs on the subject to

Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction.l HANDS Disaster Management program team has

so far trained 30 master trainers on the subject of

Community Based Disaster Risk Management.

Overall 339 training have been conducted and

11251 participants have been trained on the subject.

Major Contributions of HANDSDisaster Management Program

to major disasters in Pakistan and in Nepal and has

vast experience to deal with emergency responses

during the recent disaster in Pakistan and out of the

have been conducted and 456,951 sample units

l 843 Program Reviews have been conducted in

previous years.l A total of 115,240 monitoring visits were conducted

by all levels of managers for quality assurance of

projects/program performance.l 514 supervisory checklists of new projects were

also developed for the purpose of monitoring.l During the reporting period total of 1,121 complains

were received through Suggestion and Complaints

(SAC) software. Out of these 902 were addressed

Policy dialogue on implementation of child marriage act

Karachi. The program ran a vigorous campaign on

early child marriages and influence for legislation

to increase the age of girls� marriage to 18 years.

It facilitated celebration of national days on different

subjects including hepatitis, literacy, breast feeding,

corporal punishment, world habitat, AIDS, access

to medicine and early childhood development. ICR

program has facilitated districts to conduct 53

seminars and 94 other events in preceding year

which were attended by more than 35,000

participants.l ICR&A has so far designed 39 BCC strategies for

different projects including Family planning, MARVI

project, Water rights - WASH project, AGE project,

MARVI (revised strategy).l Overall 22 video documentaries have been

developed so far.l Prepared more than 2,109 project reports including

summary reports.l Designed and published more than 76 news bulletins

and newsletters in Urdu and English languages.l Designed, composed and printed 95,839 brochures,

193,026 leaflets, 54,823 posters, 500 copies of

program summaries of each program and 10,516

banners.l Printed 1000 copies of Profile and 3000 copies of

Brief Profile of HANDS.l Printed thousands of other miscellaneous printing

material including receipts, certificates, folders, sign

boards, titles, stickers, booklets, name plates, MIS

tools for health facilities, envelopes, name tags,

has evolved in 35 years as one of the largest Non-Profit Organizations of the country

HANDS Pakistan is registered under Societies Act, is certified by Pakistan Center of

Philanthropy (PCP) and Tax exempted by the Income Tax Department Government of

Pakistan. HANDS has qualified the Institutional Management Certification Program

(IMCP) of USAID of management standards. HANDS is accredited with European

Union. HANDS also possess membership with Humanitarian Accountability Partnership

(HAP) and the member of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

HANDS International recently established its offices in London, United Kingdom and

Kathmandu, Nepal. HANDS international -UK is registered as Non-Profit Organization

in Companies Act 2006 of England and Wales.
