ABRG/T4A Senegal STEM Schools visit with SaudequipBy: Emmanuel Techie and Mame Gueye
Caterpillar Africa Business Resource Group (ABRG) in collaboration with Saudequip / JA Delmas,
completed a successful T4A schools visit in Senegal from June 10th to 14th, 2019. Much thanks to
the great HR team at Saudequip led by Christianne Georgette Dossou, supported by Seynabou
Diagne, who participated in the presentations at all the four schools visited. The Caterpillar team
was led by Mame Diarra Gueye, ABRG/T4A Senegal Lead supported by Emmanuel Kojo Techie,
ABRG Global Chair. Also, thanks to JA Delmas HR Director Ingrid Jouvet, who initiated the ABRG
T4A deployment support partnership with Delmas back in June 2018.
Four schools were visited and five T4A presentations made. The students and staff learned a great deal about
Caterpillar, and Saudequip’s business, type of talents they seek and their established a hiring process into their
apprentice training program.
The Centre D'entreprenariat et de Développement Technique
(CEDT /G15) is an India/Senegal partnership school that offers
traditional technical education with emphasis on entrepreneur
mindset. We made 2 presentation sessions to provide over 50
students’ opportunity to hear about T4A, as many students were
writing exams. We also completed our Live Demo session, where we
guided students through a step-by-step registration process with a
student volunteer, while many others followed along on their smart
phones. This helpful demo session enabled many students and staff
to complete creating their profiles and registering for T4A on the spot.
Students who had previously started the registration process but
stopped due to challenges also found some answers to unresolved
question and moved on to complete registration.

Centre de Formation Professionnelle et Technique (CFPT/SJ)
is another partnership technical training center, this time with the
Japanese government. It was no surprise to find their workshop
decorated with competitor (Komatsu) engines and machines for
practical training. About 53 students and staff were in
attendance. For the live Demo session at LPJ, Mame Gueye
turned on her Mobile hotspot, making WIFI connectivity instantly
available to all participants. This significantly enhanced the demo,
as we were able to identify and answered variety of registration
questions. This further emphasis the need to address internet
access and computer availability challenges that hinders
technical training and knowledge transfer progress in most
African schools. Although CFPT has strong partnership with
Japan (with Japanese instructors on site), they were very
interested to know more about Caterpillar product and services
and Career prospect with Saudequip. One student had a design
idea for Caterpillar machine and asked how he could channel his
thoughts to be reviewed by Caterpillar. The team connected him
with Saudequip staff to start the discussion.
Perform is a relatively small private technical school that specialize in Digital Marketing and distribution in addition
to Mechatronics and automation technology. Over 60% of the entire 120 student population participated in the T4A
presentation and engaged in meaningful discussion about technology and career prospects. School administration
was very interested in solid partnership to further train students with exposure to real-world technical environment.
ABRG team has recommended to the Abidjan DO and Saudequip to follow-up to further nature the talent
development relation established.

Ecole supérieur Polytechnique (ESP), is a higher polythechnic institute, with a very diversed and relatively
mature students. They were very curious about higher technical education opportunities, global standard work
ethics and Caterpillar careers. Out of 65 students participated in the T4A presentation, 18 were enthusiatics femal
Mechanical & Electrical students with keen interest in diversity and Inclusion as it relates to femals in the technical
areas at Caterpillar and Saudequip workplaces. Mame and Seynabou as females currently in the workplace used
personal stories and experiences to help provide pertinent answers to their interesting questions. One student
shared and encouraging story where, decided to change course of study at the final year, however he had very
limited understanding on the engineering area of interest. He took to the internet and found T4A program.
Completing the courses provided him the exact hydrualic and engines fundamentals needed and confidence to
understand the advanced courses. He was successful and today ready to graduate. He encouraged the students
to complete the T4A to secure the knowledge now and use it to better understand all the advance courses
required to graduate. The department heads also requested a follow up presentation to the larger ESP
engineering student audience on work ethics with Resume/CV critic session. ABRG/T4A team will continue the
discussion with Abidjan DO and Saudequip on meeting this follow up action item.
Overall, a great T4A schools visit in Dakar, Senegal. There is a need to extend awareness of T4A benefit and
the Caterpillar Brand to schools outside of Dakar. Two out of 4 schools visited have talent development
partnership with a competitor and/or country other than Caterpillar and USA. This is an area ABRG/Caterpillar
need renewed focus to better compete for top talent and business to win in this emerging market. A total of 240
students in four STEM institutions have increased their awareness of the Caterpillar Brand with increased
knowledge of the importance of Science Technology Engineering & Math (STEM) for African’s development.
ABRG team can work with your team to visit schools in your territory, initiate a sustainable talent development
relationship that will bring value to your technical talent pipeline strategy.

Technicians for Africa Deployment
We would like to thank Sumo Mulbah, ABRG/T4A Liberia Lead for his
commitment to promote the Technicians for Africa program. The
Caterpillar Africa Business Resource Group (ABRG) has been our
partner in the deployment of this program for some time. Recently, the
Technician for Africa (T4A)program had some students in Liberia who
graduated the online training program in January. We had the
opportunity to meet with the graduates and also conduct a lunch and
learn on electrical troubleshooting. This included the graduates and
Mantrac technicians covering troubleshooting topics.
