Adding & Subtracting

• Add or subtract the whole number

• Add or subtract the fraction – must have common denominator first.

• Convert fraction into a mixed number and repeat step 1 and 2 if necessary. (Carry over)

Borrowing in Subtraction with Mixed numbers

• Find common denominator

• Borrow 1 whole from the whole number

• Add it to the proper fraction

• Follow steps for adding and subtracting

Method #2 for adding and subtracting fractions (no borrowing)

• Convert all mixed numbers into improper fraction

• Find common denominator

• Rewrite equivalent fractions with common denominator

• Add or subtract

• Convert improper fractions back to a mixed number
