Many years of educational research unveiled a stunning fact: Chinese characters are traditionally

introduced by their contextual meanings instead of their shape. And this considerably slowed down the

language acquisition process. This course book offers a new approach to writing and learning Chinese

characters (Kanj i in the Japanese language, Hanzi in the Chinese language).

By arranging the Kanji in small groups of similar shape on tracing sheets your learning performance will be

increased. Our brain really loves motoric reinforcement while learning through writing practice. Little

numbers attached to some strokes are explaining the correct stroke order and writing direction.

In contrast to al l other educat ional resources the numb ers wi l l only be displayed where necessary as yourfeeling of the correct writing and stroke order wil l grow from page to page.

Readings (or pronunciation) are given both: in Japanese kana and transliteration (Hepburn system).

CAPITALS and katakana are used for on-readings (Chinese origin), hiragana for kun-readings (Japanese

origin).

I f you are total ly new to the Jap anese language, p lease m ake use of addit ional resources and concentrate

on writing and meanings while using this course book.

Use only one l ine o f the tracing sheet per kanj i and training cycle - repeat ing of the readings and meanings

of the Kanji wi l l help you to ki l l p ractice t ime :- )

I f in doubt how to wri te a Kanj i p lease use your experience: When there is no numb er displayed, the stroke

order and wri t ing is as you have previou sly learned (assuming that you started this course book from the

very beginning).

Two printed fonts of each Kanji are displayed to help understa nd the small differences in their appearance

especial ly when handwriting is concerned.

For more detailed information abo ut each Kanji please refer to Kanji & Kana using the reference numbe r at

the right hand side.

Kanji & Kana is a comprehensive guide to the reading

and writing of the Japanese language, providing all

information needed to master basic characters (kanj i )

and the syllabaries ( kana).

No big deal, no long explanations - just print out this eBook and get your (soft) pencils ready.
