Chris Irwin returns to the Mt. Vernon Conference as a unique keynote speaker! A leading
coach and trainer-of trainers in the international horse industry, it was lessons learned from
working with wild horses that spurred Chris’s greatest insights into emotional intelligence,
leadership and learning how to learn. If he could transform the primal and volatile nature of
wild mustangs into 18 U.S. National Champions in riding and driving competitions, couldn’t
we do this for ourselves and potentially for each other?
These innovative insights on animal behavior inspired Chris’ writing of two best-selling
books, Horses Don’t Lie and Dancing With Your Dark Horse. Personal odysseys of how and
why “horse sense” benefits human potential and the popular success of his books established
Chris as a
pioneer in the emerging industry of horses being worked with as catalysts for learning in
therapeutic, academic, corporate team building and personal development programs.
The scope and impact of Chris’ message on horse sense is now reaching far beyond the bor-
ders of the horse industry: from leadership presentations at both The Hague in The Nether-
land and for the Canadian Government, to evolving teaching skills with educators, Chris also
provides
mentoring for disadvantaged youth, consults for counseling and therapeutic programs, and
has worked within the prison system and PTSD healing modalities.
Whether he is delivering a corporate team-building workshop with horses or keynote speak-
ing from a podium, his resume is rich and varied. Chris Irwin is guaranteed to provide
thought
provoking, highly intensive, deeply moving emotional experiences for educators to improve
students’ learning and people of all ages from all walks of life. As the Toronto Star wrote:
“Chris Irwin is a man on a mission—to challenge the way we communicate with each other; one

‖World of Autism-From Diagnosis and Treatment
To Outcomes‖
This presentation will explore the staggering rise in
the number of children in our society that are being
diagnosed with Autism. With this rise in numbers of
children, comes a rise in the number of potential
treatments. However, many of these treatments are
simply fads, and not rooted in scientific evidence.
During the course of the presentation, I will showcase
what is happening in the world of autism from diag-
nosis and treatment, to eventual outcomes for the
children. I will provide examples of what happens
when scientific evidence is followed, and the dra-
matic outcomes science can have on the child. Infor-
mation will also be disseminated on how to motivate
schools, care staff, and parents to embrace science
and discount the fads. Category: Special Education/Autism

―Effective Correction for the ―Revolving Door‖ Stu-
dent‖
We all have seen the same student waiting once
more to see the principal for disciplinary conse-
quences. What we don’t see is what motivates the
student to repeat offenses in the classroom and un-
structured environments. Joey’s utilizing his proven
program and book “Discipline for Success” will
clearly point out three revealing reasons why stu-
dents repeat self defeating behaviors. Also discussed
will be effective strategies to stop repeat offenders in
your classroom by a variety of innovative corrective
approaches which motivate proper behavior. Joey
will describe how to interrogate a student using the
RPM approach to solving the most difficult mysteries
and issues. Students respect disciplinarians that are
proactive, rather than reactive. Special handouts of

―One on One with Jim Woodward‖
How does a football player at Granite City end up
playing basketball at Collinsville as a senior and
them goes on to play football at SIU where he was the
last Saluki to start both ways for the Dawgs? How did
this same guy become a very successful football
coach, including one year as a varsity basketball
coach and then go into administration where he is
currently Superintendent/ Principal at Anna Jones
boro high school. Adding to his busy schedule is the
fact he is also President of the Illinois High School
Association board of directors while trying to get to
West Point to see his on JR play football.
This multiple talent individual is non other than Jim
Woodward. Don’t miss this session and be ready to
contribute with questions about any of his area of ex-
pertise. Category: Coaching

―Coaches Panel—Football Family‖
If there is one family in Southern Illinois football that
suggests, it would be the Karnes family of DuQuoin.
Renowned coach Bob Karnes and his three sons: Dr.
Jeff (Cancer specialist at Mayo Clinic), Jason (Herrin),
and Jarrod (Murphysboro) have been invited to par-
ticipate in this “family” round table. In 20 years at
DuQuoin, Bob won 136 games for a 70% winning per-
centage. The three sons won 11 varsity letters and
played in 82 wins while only losing 8 times during
the regular season (25-11 in playoffs). All three
played in state championship games with Jason’s 92
team winning state. This session will be more than x’s
and o’s as this amazing family will explain just what
football has meant to them. Category: Coaching

―One on one with Jeff Morris‖
Anyone in McLeansboro who watched Jeff Morris
grow up knew he was always something extraordi-
nary. Coming from a first-class family, Jeff was al-
ways smiling, a great athlete, a great student and a
great leader at school. He went on to play college
basketball , and then became a head basketball
coach (4 years) followed by becoming a high school
assistant principal at the age of 27. A story book life
was in the makings for this admired young man. But,
this story book had a distinct twist as Jeff also had a
black side that no one knew about. He first attempted
suicide in 1997 but told no one. He suffered severe
depression and constant thoughts of suicide. Finally
he found that he could hide this problem no more.
His marriage of 19 years ended and he resigned his
high school principal’s job. Jeff will hide nothing, he
will tell of his Finding Hope, a program designed to
help teens live with depression and suicide preven-
tion. This session is not only for coaches, it’s for all
teachers and parents who are facing these problems
and may not even know it. Category: Coaching/Mental Illness

―Coaches Panel-Basketball Family Panel‖
If there is a family in Southern Illinois basketball that
suggests, it would be the Lee family of McLeansboro.
Renowned coach David Lee (state champs in 84 with
a 35-0 record) will welcome son Darin (Collinsville),
and nephews Brad (Carmi-White Co.) and Roger
(Hamilton Co.) to the panel. David had over 750 wins
and three trips to state. Darin has over 500 wins and
5 trips to state. Brad had 133 wins and a trip to state
at Carmi before getting into administrations. He is
currently Superintendent at Carmi. Roger had a great
Jr. High basketball coaching career before following
his love of cross country and track to Hamilton
County. This session will be more than x’s and o’s as
this amazing family will explain just what basketball
has meant to them. Category: Coaching
