Read full course details before enrollingMake sure you fully understand the

nature of your course, what topics will be

covered and what level it is before you

enrol by reading the full course outline.

Simply search for the course at

www.citylit.ac.uk or request a copy by

calling 020 7492 2600 with the course

code to hand.

Trying out coursesVisitors’ passes are available for many

courses. Please contact the relevant

department (page 32).

Advice, interviews and auditionsDrop-in adviceYou are welcome to talk to programme

area (department) staff about your

choice of course. Most departments

offer set times and dates when you can

justdropin.Occasionally,ifyouhave

a very specific enquiry that can’t be

answered during this meeting, we might

need to speak to the tutor on your

behalf for a more detailed response.

In this instance, we will aim to get back

to you a few days after the meeting.

Tip: You may find that most of your

questions may be answered by reading

the full course outline available for every

course at www.citylit.ac.uk

Alternatively, you can contact our

Advice and Guidance team for general

information on courses at City Lit and

across London and to discuss additional

support which might be available to you.

For some areas e.g. courses for adults

with learning difficulties and courses

for adults who stammer, a personal

assessment is always offered to guide

you onto the correct course.

Telephone adviceThere may be times when you prefer

to call the department by telephone

for advice rather than coming into the

college. If you can’t get through straight

away (we may be talking to other

students or teaching), please do leave

a voicemail message and we will aim to

get back to you within 2-3 working days.

Alternatively please email us (see page

32 for contact details).

Interviews and auditionsSome courses require an interview or

audition with the relevant programme

area before you can enrol (these courses

are marked with a * after the course

code e.g. PC303*). This is to make sure

that the course is the right level for you,

and sometimes there are formal

requirements which need to be verified.

The specific details will be described in

the course outline for your course, which

you can find at www.citylit.ac.uk.

Got a question? Try our frequently asked questions page www.citylit.ac.uk/about/Frequently_asked_questions

Page 14: 32941 CityLit Student-Handbook 2010 Sign Off

To arrange for an interview or audition,

please call the relevant programme

area or refer to specific audition times

as printed in the course guide. In some

programme areas, the interview can be

done during the general advice times,

but we would strongly recommend you

check this in advance as different

practices apply in different areas.

Tip: A successful interview or audition

doesNOTguaranteeyouaspaceona

course.Onceyouhavebeenaccepted

by the programme area, you must enrol

if you want to secure a space on the

course. In general, you will need an

enrolment form that has been stamped

and signed next to the course details.

Application formsSome courses require an application

form and this will be indicated in the

course outline for your course. If you are

successful, you will be contacted by the

relevant programme area to advise you

on the next stage. Some courses then

require applicants to attend an interview.

Places are offered to successful

applicants on a first-come, first-served

basis, so early application is

recommended.

Waiting lists for full coursesCity Lit uses waiting lists for full courses

to capture expressions of interest from

students. You can join a waiting list at

www.citylit.ac.uk, by contacting the

relevant department, or by ringing the

enrolment hotline (see page 32).

If a place becomes available, we

endeavour to contact those on the

waiting list and the place will be

available on a first-come first-served

basis. However, our website is updated

every 15 minutes with course place

availability and therefore you are

strongly advised to also check the

website regularly.*

Adding your name to the waiting list

does have the additional benefit that

if extra dates are arranged you will be

contacted and offered a place and we

may also be able to suggest alternative

options.

*If you do not have access to the

website, please check availability

with the enrolment team on

020 7831 7831.

Attendance: does it matter? You will gain the most from your course

if you attend every session. Missing one

can make it hard to take part fully later.

Course outlines tell you what you can

expect to achieve – this assumes that

you are present throughout. However,

we appreciate that absence is

sometimes unavoidable. We recommend

you contact the department running

your course if you will be absent.

Some courses may have a minimum

attendance requirement – please check

your course documentation.

Statements of learning: what are they for?At the start of your course your tutor may

ask you to complete a Statement of

Learning to assess yourself and highlight

what you would most like to learn on the

course. At the end of your course you will

be able to evaluate how much you have

learnt on the same form (the tutor will

indicate on the form how many of the

course aims you have achieved). You may

ask your tutor for a copy of the Statement

of Learning once the course is completed.

For us, Statements of Learning are an

important tool for improving the quality

of our courses, as they show us how much

each student has gained from their course.

Ourfundingbody,aswellasOfsted

students achieve their learning aims.

that you observe City Lit’s policy and

procedures for health and safety.

Briefing from your tutorYour tutor will make sure that you

receive any specific training or

instruction required for you to undertake

your course safely, usually in the first

session. You must follow safety

instructions (including wearing

protective clothing where appropriate)

at all times and never carry out

processes that you feel uncertain about.

Reporting accidentsCity Lit has a policy of fully investigating

First aid and emergenciesIf someone is taken ill, injured or has an

accident whilst at City Lit, you should

immediately contact a member of staff

who will take appropriate action. First aid

boxes are situated throughout the build-

ing, but please use only with reference

to a member of staff. All requests for first

aid will require completion of an incident

/ accident / hazard report form.

Fire noticesThere are notices in each classroom and

around the building explaining what to

do if there is a fire/emergency.

At the start of your course, the tutor will

inform you of the procedure for evacu-

ating the building, identify the nearest

exits, fire extinguishers and the route to

the evacuation point.

Please remember that the lifts will not

be available for use in an emergency

situation. If you need assistance, your

tutor will either arrange for a volunteer

from the class to support you or advise

you to wait at a refuge point for the fire

services.

Refuge points are the student lounges,

departments enquiries desk and

mezzanine lift lobby.

Please remember there are stairs at both

ends of the building.

Fire alarms and drillsIn the event of an alarm, it is essential

that everyone evacuates the building as

quickly as possible. In the event of the

need to evacuate the building, the fire

alarm will sound continuously. Red

flashing lights will alert deaf students

in the event of an alarm.

The person controlling the evacuation

will be at the evacuation point, wearing

a yellow jacket. The evacuation point

for students and staff at Keeley Street is

Kean Street, as shown on all fire notices.

If you are unable to find your tutor or

the rest of the class you should report to

them at the evacuation point. Please do

not leave the evacuation point until you

are told to do so.

The alarms are tested and maintained

regularly and notification of these events

will be posted in the reception area. This

is to allow as many people as possible

to hear the sound that the alarm makes.

Should the alarms sound continuously

during any notified practice period, the

evacuation plan must be activated.

Classes held away from the main City Lit

building will have their own fire and first

aid procedures. Please ensure that you

fully understand the instructions given to

you by your tutor.

student disciplinary procedure

Stages of the student disciplinaryprocedure

Stage 1 - Informal approach

Stage 2 - Programme Manager’s involvement

Stage 3 - Deputy Principal’s involvement

1. Scope and purpose

1.1 This document sets out the code of

conduct to which students are expected

to adhere when admitted to City Lit. It

also sets out the procedure which should

be followed where the code of conduct

is breached.

1.2 Breach of the code of conduct may

lead to disciplinary action being taken

against a student and repeated breaches

or a very serious breach may result in

permanent exclusion.

1.3 This code applies to all students and

users of City Lit, and at all times during

the year.

2. Time periods

2.1 With the exception of the time

allowed for lodging an appeal, time peri-

ods stated in this code are guidance and

may be varied by the college in excep-

tional circumstances.

2.2 Periods of days in this code are

officeworkingdays.Officeworkingdays

are defined as Mondays to Fridays. It will

be assumed that documents sent by first

class post have been received within 48

hours of posting.

3. Student entitlementAt all stages in the disciplinary proce-

dures, students may bring a friend or

colleague (but not a legal adviser) to the

interviews and will have the opportunity

to give their views of the situation and

raise any points which should be consid-

ered before our decision is made.

Where it is alleged that a criminal of-

fence has been committed, a legal advis-

er may be brought, provided City Lit is

informed of the proposed representative

in good time for the meeting.

Students have the right at all stages to

see material that is kept on their file and

to request its removal if it is found to be

incorrect.

4. City Lit code of conduct/ obligations of studentsStudents must observe City Lit’s rules as

detailed below, breaches of which may

result in disciplinary action being taken

against students.

Disciplinary action may be taken against

students whose behaviour is considered

by the college to constitute misconduct.

If this happens repeatedly or there is a

single very serious violation, the student

may be suspended or expelled (see

Gross Misconduct below).

Where students are seriously

misbehaving and causing disruption

to the learning of others, they may be

required to leave the classroom and/or

City Lit premises immediately. This

action by a tutor or other member of

staff dealing with the incident does not

constitute suspension or expulsion and

will not prejudice the subsequent han-

dling of the case, which will normally be

under Stage 3 of the procedure.

6. Gross misconductAny behaviour involving violence or the

threat of violence, deliberate damage to

property, putting the health and safety

of others in danger, disruptive behaviour,

bullying, harassment, intimidation,

dishonesty (including * breaching exam

regulations and theft) or any illegal

activity is likely to be treated as ‘gross

misconduct’. These are only examples

and not a complete list.

* As laid out in City Lit’s assessment

malpractice policy.

Gross misconduct will be dealt with

under the third stage of the Disciplinary

procedures.

The Principal has the power to suspend

or exclude a student and can delegate

these powers to a senior member of

staff.

Use of college computersCity Lit has a duty to ensure its comput-

ing systems are only used for proper

and appropriate purposes and also to

minimise the effects of security incidents,

such as viruses. The use of computers

may be monitored to ensure compliance

with the following rules.

You may use the college computers for:
