Shipman Foundation was acquired by businessman Herbert C. Shipman (1892-1977), who was best known for his involvement with orchids and saving the nēnē, the endangered Hawaiian Goose. An avid admirer of Oriental art, he collected what he found interesting and beautiful without special direction. He obtained most of his collection in Hawai`i, both in Honolulu and on the Big Island of Hawai`i. He never visited China himself. This collection will be sold through public sale by the prestigious auction house Christie's, to benefit the Museum's future acquisitions and collections. The first sale, Interiors, New York, Rockefeller Center, will take place on December 11, 2013, and will include some thirty-seven items of artwork from the Shipman Collection. Pierce Opening Reception

On July 25, 2013, the Museum hosted the opening nightreception for our new special exhibit, John Howard

Pierce: Photographs of Hawai`i Island 1958-1969, anevent that turned out to be exuberant, joyful, andprofoundly moving.

A minimum of 130members and specialguests were inattendance(estimates varywidely), nineteen ofwhom were featuredin the exhibitphotographs; twoothers could notattend the receptionbut visited theMuseum earlier in theday. Also inattendance were

surviving family members of six photo subjects who havepassed away, some traveling all the way from O`ahu tohonor their parents.

lei maker from the island of Ni`ihau, returns to the LymanMuseum to teach this authentic art of Hawai`i on Friday,December 13 and Saturday, December 14, from 10:00A.M. to 4:00 P.M. on both days.

Necklaces (lei), bracelets, and earrings created in the

pikake style may be made using momi ke`oke`o shells(white), momi lenalena shells (yellow), or momi `ōnikinikishells (white with dark specks). Choose your color whenmaking your reservation! On either day you may learnhow to make an 18-inch necklace ($205), a bracelet($85), or a pair of earrings ($65)-or more than one piece,as long as you sign up for specific pieces in advance. Space is limited to 25 persons per day; only people whohave registered can be permitted in the classroom. Reservations must be made, pieces and colors specified,and the workshop fee(s) paid by Friday, November 29, toensure your place and the availability of shells. Aloha 'Oe Hugh Willocks

On September 4, longtimeMuseum Trustee Hugh Willockspassed away at Hilo MedicalCenter. He had served onthe Board since 1989 and wasa valued member of the PhysicalPlant and Grounds Committee. Born in Hilo on July 15, 1941,Hugh Hazard Willocks was theson of Scottish immigrants whocame to Hawai`i in the early1900s. A 1959 graduate ofPunahou High School, Hughserved in the Vietnam War as afirst lieutenant in the Army. In

1973 he helped establish Willocks ConstructionCorporation, of which he was president and Boardchairman. Hugh was also a former president of the HawaiiIsland Contractors Association, and a member of theRepublican Party and the National Rifle Association. Heenjoyed hunting, golfing, and playing volleyball, and wasrenowned for his big grin and the beautiful fresh hibiscusflower he always tucked into his feathered hatband.
