Dear Parents, Students, and Patrons:

It’s already November and whether we like it or not, snow and cold weather will be soon here. Since our last issue of the CMS Newsletter, we’ve had 4 more weeks of “Wildcats of the Week” plus the October “Wildcats of the Month”.

Trimester 1 is soon coming to an end as it officially ends on Monday, November 14th and students will begin attending their Trimester 2 classes on Tuesday the 15th. A week and a half after that we will have Thanksgiving Break and then... De-cember!

On November 11, Carlisle Middle School will be hosting its first-ever Veterans Day Ceremony at Carlisle High School from 9:00 - 10:15 am. The past six weeks both staff and students have been preparing to present an honorable and respectable ceremony for our veterans who are true heroes. On pages 4-5 is a short article I recently wrote about the ceremony for the Wildcat Weekly.

Teachable moments for upcoming 2016 Veterans Day Ceremony presented by CMS

Next Friday on November 11, Carlisle Middle School will host its first-ever Veterans Day Ceremony at Carlisle High School from 9:00 – 10:15 am. As principal of CMS, I consider this a big deal for many reasons in-cluding: (A) The sacrifices all veterans have made to ensure American way of life; (B) My own family connection to the military; (C) The learning opportunity that our students will be presented before, during, and after this event is priceless. Furthermore, the fact that both CMS students and staff have spent a great deal of time and energy the last six weeks in preparing the ceremony for our veterans means we all want it to be an outstanding and honorable recognition for our nation’s heroes. That latter point brings me to the topic of heroes. What exactly is a hero? For some, it’s someone they know such as a parent, grandparent, teacher, or coach. For others, it’s a pro athlete, celebrity, or movie star. And for some—many, actually—it’s ordinary people who do extraordinary things such as putting their lives on the line every day: police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and members of the military. As I’ve grown older, I truly consider the latter heroes—after all, they do ensure the American way of life by providing freedom (which really isn’t free). At one point in my early twenties, I considered joining the ranks of the military but ended on a different path than several members of my family. While my father was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army before being Hono-rably Discharged after completing his term of service, my brother is a retired Lieutenant Colonel who spent 29 years in the Army as a Judge Advocate General. My mother worked as a civilian in the Pentagon from 1993-2004 (she retired—pre-planned—3 weeks after 9/11/01) and my great-uncle fought in World War II in the Pacific Oce-an theater which consisted of major warfare between the allies and Japanese.About six weeks ago, CMS began planning and preparing for the Veterans Day Ceremony: not only are students creating and presenting all of the essays and videos for the ceremony as part of their Literacy, WIT (Well-being, Information, & Technology) classes, but both the Vocal and Instrumental music classes are performing. Our 8th Grade Class President will be recognizing all branches of the military while representatives from the Student Council will be serving as hosts. Locally, the VFW Post 2099 will serve as our Color Guard which includes CMS Custodian Mr. Skip Moore whom is a veteran himself. Finally, our entire student body will be learning about Veterans Day prior to transporting to the high school as all students will spend about 30 minutes in an interacti-ve session about Veterans Day—learning exactly why we honor and recognize our veterans on November 11th. Some key concepts and major questions that will be addressed:

1. What exactly is Veterans Day?2. How does Veterans Day differ from Memorial Day?3. Where is the headquarters of the US Military located?4. Why do we honor Veterans on November 11? 5. How should people act during services such as the Veterans Day Ceremony?

During my research to better understand this event, I found myself personally learning new information about Veterans Day—so if anyone reading this article couldn’t definitively answer any of the above questions, I both cordially invite and encourage you to attend CMS’ presentatation of the Veterans Day Ceremony next week…. we will have ample seating for all guests and sincerely believe CMS will be honoring and recognizing all Veterans in an utmost respectful fashion.
