A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR

3

Dear Members and Friends of Faith,

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

As you read this, I will be travelling in Norway, the land of my ancestors. I have wanted to go to Norway for most of my life and, as I celebrate my 60th birthday, I thought it would be a good time to live out that dream. It will be a reminder to me of the “cloud of witnesses” who surround me in my faith and life journey. None of us is actually an island. We are all connected to the ancestors who came before us and who will follow after we are gone. I am looking forward to connecting with my ancestral roots.

As a faith community at First Presbyterian, we are also connected to our ancestral roots that reach back 180 years - to that first group of 12 Presbyterians who gathered in the Capitol to worship God in Jefferson City. We are connected to the Presbyterians who moved to this site at Madison & McCarty to worship 120 years ago. We are connected with the first group of Presbyterians who gathered 20 years ago to plan for Habitat for Humanity in Jefferson City. We will celebrate that ministry on August 3rd in our morning worship. On June 29th we will celebrate our history and our future as we welcome new members in worship at 10:00 am and celebrate Founders Day with a church-wide reception for 50-plus-year members at 11:00 am. We will also be remembering, celebrating and commissioning our Food 4 Kids program, which is in its 4th year at First Presbyterian Church.

On June 29th, we will also be kicking off our Sunday Night Live @5 series on “Faith in Politics” with David Henry preaching on “Justice Doesn’t Just Happen” and Natasia Sexton leading the music from the Civil Rights Era. Army Master Sergeant Roger Morff, who served a year long tour in Iraq, will speak on “Faith and Patriotism” on July 6th at SNL. Abiathar Naaman will speak at the July 20th SNL on “Faith and International Politics” as he explores the situation in his home country of Nigeria.

So it turns out that we are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses that stretch back in time, around the world, and into the future. Join us this month at First Presbyterian Church to connect with this cloud of witnesses and to be part of the cloud of witnesses that extends into the future.

Gud vaere med deg (God bless you),

Pastor Rob

“Re-purposing” of the AGAPE House The Agape House of Jefferson City has been serving those visiting loved ones in our area prisons for almost 25 years. Our congregation has been a key supporter of this community ministry from the beginning. The numbers of guests at the house has dropped dramatically over the past few years for a variety of reasons. Consequently, the house with its 15 beds is underutilized. As one person noted, this is a solution looking for a problem. The current Board and interested supporters are in the process of discussing how best to utilize this resource for our community. The idea is how best to re-purpose this residential facility located in the core of Jefferson City at 810 E. High Street to better meet the needs of our community. The current Board gave approved for a formal repurposing committee to be established for the property. This process is underway and an initial meeting is currently scheduled for June 25th with interested persons and subject matter experts to explore the feasibility of some specific ideas for the house. The need that has received the most support is to serve young women at risk of becoming homeless and dropping out of school. The opportunity is to use the Agape House to provide emergency and temporary housing for such girls with a safe, clean and supervised place to stay. There has also been discussion of possible serving as transitional housing for young women exiting foster care. If you or someone you know has knowledge or expertise with this need area and are interested in assisting in the exploration of the feasibility of transitioning the Agape House into such a facility, please contact Scott Johnston, at [email protected] or Troy Stabenow, Agape House Board President.

Back Home from Hungary/Ukraine

It was so good to greet our dear friend David Pandy-Szekeres at the airport in Budapest on May 21! After nearly 30 years in a partnership between Missouri Union Presbytery (MUP) and the Cistibiscan District of the Hungarian Reformed Church (HRC), several generations of us have bonded as brothers and sisters in the Lord’s family. In the 2 weeks from May 21 to June 3, Bob and Annell Bailey and 7 other travelers had a wonderful time that can only be summarized much too briefly here: Bob and Annell worshiped with our congregation’s partner church in Szerencs. After lunch

with their pastor Rev. Dr. József Börzsönyi and his wife Mariana, she took us to tour the local castle. We gave them our church directory as a gift. They overwhelmed us with gifts of the world-famous local wine, chocolates, gift books, etc. Our driver that day was the Administrative Assistant to Bishop Csomos, Hajnalka Domokos, who stayed at our home when she was in Jefferson City.

We met with the District’s Chief Elder Tibor Abram (the layman who is the partner and equal of Bishop Csomos.) We discussed a request from a seminary teacher in poverty-stricken Malawi in Africa, and agreed to share the cost. We are now joint partners, sharing in ministries elsewhere – in Africa and Ukraine at present. What an exciting time!

In Ukraine, we were in the Hungarian district in far southwest -- no evidence of fighting. In Beregsom we attended a confirmation worship, followed by a huge meal at home of the young pastor, his pregnant wife and adorable toddler daughter. We saw the furnace provided by Missouri MUP funds, which enabled the family’s move from a tiny apartment.

Also in Ukraine, we saw the work of our friend and guide David Pandy-Szekeres, Director of HRC schools in Ukraine. We attended graduation of one of the HRC secondary schools, saw gypsy camp with kindergarten run by David’s HRC.

Next time, please come with us to see God’s amazing work where communists once ruled!

Yours in Christ, Annell Bailey

MANY THANKS to our Family Life Committee for sponsoring the Concert by the Shallowford Presbyterian Church Youth Choir on June 10, and to the 23 families who hosted the Choir members and their Chaperones! Also a big THANK YOU to our Youth who greeted and welcomed the Shallowford Youth – and introduced them to Central Dairy!
