The Integumentary System

1. INTEGUMENTARY SYSTEM

A LARGE Word for the LARGEST Organ in the Human Body…

SKIN.

2. Five functions of the skin

A. It forms a barrier to help prevent harmful substances from entering the body.

Ex. the skin protects your insides from chlorine in a pool.

B. Regulates the body temperature in spite of external changes.

2. 5 functions of the skin

C. Helps eliminate mineral waste, through perspiration.

D. Gathers information about the environment. (Nerves)

E. Produces vitamin D in some skin cells in presence of sunlight. (helps the body absorb calcium)

4. Epidermis

a. Outermost layer

b. Thinnest layer on most of body

c. Contains no nerve or blood cells

d. Dead cells remain on the surface for about 2 weeks

e. Dead cells form a protective barrier for the living cells under them.

5. Dermisa. Contains fat

b. Contains blood vessels, nerves, sweat glands, hair and oil glands.

c. Openings to surface for sweat and oil called pores.

d. Openings for hair growth called follicles.

e. Melanin is a pigment that determines skin color.

6. Caring for skin:

7. Hair and toe nails are also part of the integumentary system.

Systems that interact with the integumentary system

Immune System

The oil and sweat glands on your skin secrete fluids that decrease the pH on the surface of your skin and kill microorganisms. There are even enzymes in your sweat that can digest bacteria. 

Systems that interact with the integumentary system

Circulatory System

The integumentary system also works closely with the circulatory system and the surface capillaries through your body. Capillaries near the surface of the skin open when your body needs to cool off and close when you need to conserve heat

Nervous System

We can't leave out the important sense of touch. Your nervous system depends on neurons embedded in your skin to sense the outside world.
