I am the maid of honor for mycousin’s wedding in June. This title comes withmany responsibilities, including soothing a crying bride after she learns she doesn’t havea clue where she is going to host the weddingreception or who is going to cater it.

I suggested she try Cole Park Commons and Eagle Catering and luckily, shewas able to get the date she wanted andplanned a wonderful menu. The friendly staffsat down with her, her fiancé and her Family tocreate a custom dinner for her guests and todiscuss how to decorate the room she reserved. When she called me later, excited forher reception, I felt a little like I had saved the wedding.

It isn’t just weddings that EagleCatering can create. From small intimate parties to grand occasions, Eagle Catering willhelp with any event. From welcome homes, hail and farewells and military formals to thenon-military events like rehearsal dinners, anniversaries, retirements, promotion parties, conferences, off-sites, reunions, proms, balls, corporate dinners, cocktail parties, job fairs, Family Readiness Group meetings, and tradeshows – Eagle Catering has the experience to provide a successful occasionfor your guests.

Eagle Catering can provide cateringfor other locations - as well as Cole Park Commons and the Joe Swing Recreation Center - but why would you want to do thatwhen you can reserve the elegant Cole ParkCommons. The rooms vary in size so it is perfect for any event. The Grand Ballroom canseat 360 at round tables, 512 at long tables,809 standing, and 539 theater style. The MosulRoom can seat 280 at round tables, 416 atlong tables, 625 standing, and 416 theaterstyle. The Grand Ballroom was perfect for mycousin’s wedding reception.

Need something a little smaller? TheBastogne Room seats 30 at round tables, 48at long tables, 95 standing, and 63 theatrestyle. The Ashau Room seats 30 at round tables, 48 at long tables, 89 standing, and 60theatre style. The Normandy Room seats 70 atround tables, 80 at long tables, 150 standing, and 80 theatre style. For a more intimateevent, try the Kandahar room which seats 36 atlong tables, 68 standing and 70 theatre style.

One thing my cousin insisted shehave at her wedding was dancing. The firstquestion she asked the staff at Cole Park Commons was if she would be able to have adance floor and of course, they were able tomake her one happy bride. She was thrilled to

find out Cole Park Commons and Eagle Catering offers audio and visual packages to.

She was also extremely relieved thatshe didn’t have to worry about scrambling tofind tables and chairs for her guests. Thankfully, Cole Park Commons not only hasmultiple options for chairs and tables but theyalso offer linens for beautiful and stress-freedecorating.

Before she booked Cole Park Commons, she also looked at renting JoeSwing Recreation Facility for her wedding reception. Located just inside Gate 1, overlooking the Joe Swing Quarry, this facilityis another great option for proms, meetings, conferences, classes, military balls and parties.Joe Swing also offers many of the same amenities that Cole Park Commons offers to help make your event as enjoyable as possible.

“You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pickup a book and read to a child.”

In 1997, while discussing ways to encouragechildren to read more, the National Education Association (NEA) created “Read Across America”, anannual event in hopes to inspire children to be lifelong, diverse readers. Studies show that children who aremotivated to read often do better in school. The firstevent was held nationwide in schools and libraries on March 2, 1998.

Why March 2? If you read the above poem, penned by NEA member Anita Merina, the style andverse may sound very familiar to you. In fact, the phraseis often attributed to the beloved children’s author,Theodor Seuss Geisel, commonly known as Dr. Seuss. The poem was published in The Augusta Chronicle inpart to promote the Read Across America Day, but also to pay homage to Dr. Seuss, whose birthday is onMarch 2.

Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel attended bothDartmouth College and Oxford University and at onepoint he left college to travel Europe. Upon his returnto the United States, Ted worked as a cartoonist for theSaturday Evening Post for over 15 years. It was during World War II, while serving with Frank Capra’sSignal Corps, that Ted honed his love of both illustration and satire. Following the War and whileworking for a number of magazines, including VanityFair and Life Magazine, Ted published his first children’snovel, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. After being rejected by 27 different publishing houses,he chose to publish the book using the pseudonym, Dr.Seuss, after his mother’s maiden name. He added “Dr.”as his father had hoped for him to attend medicalschool. In 1954, following a request from publisherHoughton Mifflin for Seuss “to bring back a book children can’t put down,” Seuss penned The Cat in theHat. This was due, in part, to an article published in LifeMagazine that stated children were not learning to readbecause their books were boring. It was this book, TheCat in the Hat, that solidified Seuss’ status as a prominent children’s author. As late as 2013, both TheCat in the Hat and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, BlueFish, continue to outsell the majority of newly published children’s books. Dr. Seuss sadly passed awayfrom cancer complications on September 24, 1991.

Throughout his 34 year career, Dr. Seusspublished over 60 books for both children and adults. His most commonly used pen name was “Dr. Seuss,”he also used the name Theo LeSeig and Rosetta Stoneas well. His books have been translated into 15 different languages and have sold over 200 million copies worldwide. His books inspired 11 different children’s specials, a Broadway musical, andfour feature films. Dr. Seuss received two AcademyAwards, two Emmy Awards, the Peabody Award, the

Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal, the Pulitzer Prize, and a Staron Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Given Dr. Seuss’ success in inspiring childrento read, the decision to celebrate Read Across AmericaDay on his birthday seemed a natural one. Althoughthe official celebration is slated for March 2, 2016, manyschools throughout the country have expanded theprogram to encompass the entire week, featuring cos-tume contests, guest readers, and other celebrations.

Our own Robert F. Sink Memorial Library, located at 38 Screaming Eagle Blvd., plans to incorporate a Dr. Seuss celebration in their story timeson Thursday, March 3. Story times are held at 10:30a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and will feature Dr. Seuss book selections, crafts, and a birthday party. Patrons areurged to come in costume to help staff celebrate themany achievements of this magnificent man. For moreinformation, please call the library at (270) 798-5729.

I am extremely proud to be a woman and I love March because it gives me a chance to reflecton the accomplishments of my fellow women. Hereare MWR, I am surrounded by wonderful, strong and successful women.

Before I joined the MWR marketing team, I didn’thave any females to look up to in terms of my career.I had recently graduated with my master’s degreewhere I held the top position at the student newspaper and my advisor was a man. While I appreciate all the guidance and support my collegeadvisor gave me, I was sorely lacking female mentors. Upon joining the MWR Marketing, I quicklylearned how fortunate I would be because everywoman in this department is a role model to me intheir own way.

In honor of Women’s History Month, I asked the women of MWR Marketing to tell mewhat it means to them to be a woman.

Melissa Schaffner: Marketing Director

Being a woman doesn’t always have tomean being a mother, or a wife. My mother was ayoung wife and a mom at 19. She told my sister andI constantly to “see the world, get an education - youcan be whateveryou want to be”and to do all of thatbefore we “settledown, get marriedand raise a Family”...in other words, don’t do what shedid! She wantedmore for her daughters.

Wow, did she ever get it! Both my sisterand I are unmarried and we are not mothers. My sister is 47 and I am 53. We do, however, both havevery fulfilling careers, active social lives and have traveled extensively. We have studied traditionallyand non-traditionally - in fields that resulted in careers and in areas that were just interesting to us.

I think Mom is pretty proud of how weturned out - but I am sure she sometimes misses having grandchildren! Fortunately, we have peoplein our lives who present opportunities to share in what we did not plan to do. I have a lovely “borrowed” granddaughter who I hope will have myexample of being a strong, independent woman inaddition to many others in her life, and in my sister'scase - she has a lot of rescue pets who benefit fromher loving care

Tara Goodson: Marketing Coordinator

Stop what you are doing right now and answer this question. When was the last time you didsomething for yourself? Strictly for yourself, and be

honest. If you have to count on your fingers and toes, then it’s been too long!

It took me many years to figure out thatwhen I prioritize, I need to include “me time”. I hadthe same thoughts you are having right now, theones that include guilt (oh, the guilt!), the ones aboutnot having enough time in the day, or the ones aboutbeing selfish. But before you spiral into a downwardthought process, let me outline whyyou need time foryourself.

You cannotbe your best (inserttitle here) withoutbeing your best self.Read the sentenceagain, and one more time. The first thing you needto do is accept that you do deserve time to yourselfevery day, then decide how to spend that time. Evaluate the items that waste your time (hello socialmedia), and then prioritize the things you must do.Learn to say no to the things that don’t bring you joyand satisfaction, and learn to ask for help when youneed it. Then commit to it! 15-20 minutes a day(bathroom time does not count) is a great start! Eventually you can build up to longer periods of timethat allow you to rediscover yourself. Trust me, youare worth it.

Lisa Taylor: Marketing Coordinator

Being a working woman has been nothingbut adventures from the very beginning. Balancing careers and children, all while supporting your partner’s dreams and goals is a roller-coaster ridealone. As if that wasn’t enough many of us are nowfaced with caring for aging parents in addition togrowing children. This will, at times, press your sanity and capabilities to the breaking point. However, there are so many life lessons that can onlybe cultivated in Families with three generationsunder one roof.

One of the big benefits is that you have another person in the home who loves your children. The experiences that your parent brings to the relationship add color to your children’s world-viewsthat will be with them forever. Unfortunately, all blessings come with trials.

Three generations living under the sameroof will cause friction from time to time. Will you be frustrated? Yes! Frequently! But there is a certain

satisfaction in beingable to care for yourparents in their oldage. You will feel inadequate sometimes and you mayfeel you have failedmore than you succeed, but that is

okay. Allow yourself to be imperfect and you will findthat when life presses you, youwill always rise tomeet the challenge.

Cynde Clack: Marketing Assistant

As duty stations came and went throughout my husband’s Army career, I chose towork. I was both an Army Spouse and a career ArmyCivilian. I started with MWR in Okinawa, Japan, I waslucky enough to transfer from position to position sothat I didn’t have a break in service. Some people arereally great stay-at-home parents but not me. I needed that adult time away so that I really enjoyedthe time I was at home. I firmly believe that my careerwith MWR kept me centered. I missed my husbandwhen he deployed or went TDY but I stayed busy.

This independence fostered a resiliencethat made me a better wife and mother. I was confident in my ability to handle whatever I neededto and this allowed him to be confident so he didn’tworry about his Family being okay when he was awayfrom home. If he was “away on business” and I wanted to go somewhere or do something – I packed the kids up and off we went, whether it wasto a theme park that was a short drive away or on aplane half-way around the world. Life with the military is an adventure. Don’t be held back by fearof the unknown!

All the women in my department inspireme to be better not only in career but personally. I look up to each and every one of them very much.It is almost like having access to multiple big sisters, which is wonderful for me because I am the oldest child.

This March, I will not only reflect about the history of womanhood as a whole, but the experiences of the women who encourage me everyday. I am only 25 years old and I feel like every year,I am learning something new about myself as awoman. I know these women have already done somuch to shape me and help me grow and I knowthey will continue to do so. I cannot thank themenough!

If you are male, I hope you take the timethis month to thank the women in your life who haveinfluenced you for the better. If you are a fellowwoman, take a spell to look back on our history andlook forward to our future!

The Ladies of MWR Celebrate WomanhoodBy Jenelle Grewell

Page 16: 3/16 Fort Campbell MWR Life

On January 9, theCincinnati Bengals playedthe Pittsburgh Steelers

in the National FootballLeague’s second wild-cardplayoff game.

The Cincinnati Bengals hadthe game won – save for the actions of Bengals player AdamJones. With the Steelers down byone, and emotions running extremely high, Jones sealed thefate of his team when he made contact with an official and got his

team penalized. During the game, Jones exuded

hostility and took offense to the game actionsof the Steelers – he just obviously couldn’t letit go. And in a moment when Jones shouldhave been focused on helping his team prevent the Steelers (who were on the edgeof field goal territory) from advancing the ball,Jones let his emotions get out of control, gotinto an argument with an opposing coach andmade contact with an official. It cost his team15 yards and the game.

The question that came to me waswhat was Jones doing getting confrontationalit with anyone at that critical moment in thegame? Why couldn’t he just let the trash-talk-ing go? Was it worth what the team lost?

Let me pose that question in a waythat’s more personal to you: what are you refusing to let go of that’s costing you?

Whether it’s an offense that could becosting you intimacy in your marriage, or a

misunderstanding that is costing you moneyin a business arrangement, or maybe it’s a difference of perspectives that is costing youa connection with your teenagers. What areyou holding onto? Or maybe the more important question that you may have silentlyasked yourself is–why can’t I let it go?

I recently read a story about a waitress at a restaurant in Ohio who took tothe Internet to write an open-letter responseto a customer who left the following words onher ticket – “He’s my husband, find

your own. Good luck” when the customerthought this particular waitress was flirtingwith her husband.

She had a few choice words for thecustomer in a letter that was shared over50,000 times, last I checked and she defended her response, “I don't typically talk about work this way, but this needs to be shown/addressed. Mainly because it’s hysterical but partially because I’m offended,” she stated.

Politician J.C. Watts once said, “It doesn't take a lot of strength to hang on.It takes a lot of strength to let go.”

What is it about letting go and moving on that can be so challenging? It’s notuncommon to experience resistance, fear, doubts, worry, frustration, sadness, excitement, anxiousness, joy, or any combination of these emotions when makingthe decision to let go of something. Whetherit is an idea, relationship, beginning, ending, career path, or anything that could createchange in one’s current circumstances, “getting over it” is more often than not; easier said than done.

Page 17: 3/16 Fort Campbell MWR Life

www.campbell.armymwr.com

There are any number of things thatcan make getting over something, either difficult or easy. But why is it generally difficult to get over something?

First of all, when we think of lettinggo of something, generally we dwell on whatwere “losing.” We think of what we mightmiss out on or what could have been. We getemotionally involved with the unknown andhang on for dear life to any good that mayhave come from what we’re being told to getover.

Naturally we don’t like the processof change. Having to let go and get over itwould mean that we have to change the storywe tell ourselves about that thing, we have toalter what’s familiar to us, and find something to replace it with that’s just asgood or better.

Getting over it doesn’t mean don’tbe sad, angry, or feel hurt. I’m sure you haveheard the infamous quote, “cry me a river, build me a bridge, and get over it.” Yes, cry ifyou need to and allow yourself to feel, butdon’t stay there. Build a bridge, get up anddon’t drown in self-pity. Move forward onestep at a time.

Again all easier said than done, especially if you don’t know how to, or havethe confidence in the stepping forward part, allow me to shed some light.

First things first, healing.

To do this, begin expressing appreciation and gratitude for the good, thebad, and the ugly of what you’re getting over. You can do this by writing or talking about it.

Be grateful for the challenges and the growth.

Be appreciative for the example thatwas given of how you either do or don’t wantto be. Be thankful that you now have the opportunity to move on to something newthat could be the answer you have beenlooking for.

Loosen your emotional grip.

Holding onto a story that is full ofdraining negative emotion will physically exhaust you and weigh you down.

Now, create an image in your mind ofwhat’s next.

What does this look, feel, and soundlike? This is your new focus. It’s been said thatthere’s a reason the rear view mirror is smallerthan the windshield. Focus on the bigger picture and move forward.

Finally, be aware of the story you tell yourself.

You will only move forward as far asyou tell yourself you can. If you continuallydoubt yourself, you won’t accomplish anything. If you feel you deserve the freedomof moving forward and believe you can do it,you will.

Whether we are talking about a bosswho passed you over on a promotion forsomeone less qualified, the parent whomessed up your childhood, the best friendwho betrays you or the customer who wasbeing extremely difficult, the circumstancesdon’t matter.

That’s right! I’m going to say it again, the circumstances don’t matter. Why? Because your ability to get past somethingand let it go does not lie primarily with the offending event itself, but rather in how youspin the narrative in your own mind. You canbe a victim or a victor, competent or clumsy, accusing or accepting. Let me get personal.

Years ago, a very good friend ofmine walked away from a business opportunity in which I thought we would havea magnificent partnership. In the days that followed his decision, I thought him to be anunsupportive jerk who didn’t believe in me.My bitterness bled into our friendship for agood while. Eventually, I came to see that wewere two men who each had choices to makeabout the roads in our respective lives. Wechose differently. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe in me; in fact, his decision had nothingto do with me. Once I truly accepted this, wewere able to reconcile.

But it had to start inside of me, as itwill now start inside of you. Count-down from three, loosen your grip and simplylet…it…go. If you need support and help getting over something, Army CommunityService has many great programs and activities that can provide you with the assistance you need. Get ready for March’s Eagle Challenge FitnessTour event on Saturday, March 12 with the 5th

Annual USO Ten Miler race event, including a 10 mile race, 5K, anda free Fun Run. The races will start and finish at Fort CampbellMWR’s Destiny Park, which is outside of Gate 10 and across fromthe stables.

The course for the 10 Miler and the 5K will be the same asthe 2015 race, but the Fun Run will change slightly to avoid thesteep hill on the way back to the finish line.

Runners and walkers can expect typical race amenities, including water and electrolyte replacement on the course and at the finish line, carbohydrate and protein snacks upon completion, and a safe, marked, and timed course. This year’s

event will increase theamount of course supportand encourage the cheering crowds to staylater and cheer on thosethat are participating.

To celebrate our 5thannual race and the USO’s75th Anniversary, thisyear’s event will include funadditions for the runnersand for those that come tocheer on family andfriends. Runners can

expect the first finisher’smedal, a children’s obstaclecourse for those waiting on running parents and a selfie station.

Also, in response to afunny but unfortunate situationlast year, we are strengtheningour communication systemwith the portable latrine company so we can be surewe have enough units for allthe runners! Those that run therace last year might recall that the company dropped off the latrines in the middle of the course, instead of at the start/finishline.

Last year, 906 people registered for the event, and we areexpecting more than 1,000 this year. To register, go towww.active.com/fort-campbell-ky/running/distance-running-races/uso-ten-miler-5k-and-free-fun-run-2016.

If you’d like to participate in the event, but aren’t interested in running or walking, groups and individuals are encouraged to compete for the Spirit Award, as voted on by therunners at the finish line.
