FOREWORD

Congratulations on the 30th edition of the Tasmanian Wine Show, an achievement as exceptional as

the quality of our State’s wine. Injecting more than $100 million to the local economy annually and

directly employing more than 2 000 full time equivalent positions (often in regional areas), the Tas-

manian wine industry sits at the heart of our agriculture, manufacturing and tourism sectors. Our wine

story is also a key part of our unique Tasmanian brand.

Events such as the Tasmanian Wine Show are an ideal forum to further raise the industry’s profile and

to provide industry professionals and decision makers the opportunity to learn more about Tasmanian

wine. I am delighted that the Tasmanian Government is involved once again this year and I am proud

to add that we continue to support growth in this sector – through research and development, indus-

try and market development and biosecurity.

Tasmania remains a net exporter of premium wines and we are committed to supporting those Tas-

manian wine producers who wish to grow their export markets. For example, the Government has

allocated $600 000 over four years to Wine Tasmania for a wine market development and tourism

initiative that will enable the sector to continue growing it premium reputation in key markets.

On behalf of the Tasmanian Government, I thank those involved in the organisation of this year’s

show, all of whom are volunteers. Congratulations on a job well done. We look forward to a successful

show and to celebrating as many medal winners as possible.

Guy Barnett MP Minister for Primary Industries and Water

SPECIAL THANKS TO David Dunn and the wonderful staff at Drysdale North Campus,

30TH TASMANIAN WINE SHOW

The 30th Tasmania Wine Show provides an opportunity to look both back and forwards. The

first show in 1991 saw James Halliday preside over 43 wines; the show was in two halves with

one section providing written feedback and the other section awarding medals and trophies.

Huon Hooke joined the judging panel in 1992 and the long-term commitment of both Huon

and James has been of tremendous benefit to the Tasmanian Wine Industry.

The modern show has exhibitors who enter wines in multiple classes along with those who

have just a single wine to enter. The exhibitors from the early shows have been joined by the

next generations of growers and wine makers.

I’d like to give a huge thankyou to this years judging panel, including our Tasmanian Associate

judges and the wonderful stewarding team. The names of the judges, associate judges,

committee, stewards and other helpers appear at the front of the catalogue and I propose an

enormous thank you to them all.

The sponsors logos also appear at the front of the catalogue and I acknowledge their ongoing

support and various contributions to the Show. In particular I thank both the Minister and

Department of State Growth for supporting the visit of Chuck Hayward, our international

judge.

The outlook for the next 30 years, through to 2050, will be an exciting time for the Tasmanian

Wine Industry.

Cheers!

The high number of top medals attests to the quality of these wines. There were many

highlights and few disappointing or faulty wines - just a couple of bretty wines and one volatile

wine.

superbly.

23 Elsewhere Vineyard Riesling 2018 Bronze A strong class with many highlights. These wines are on the whole restrained and delicate, age-

worthy and needed extra time to start to reveal their true worth. Some were still too restrained

and may emerge in the future. Several showed deft use of low-level sweetness. Some had a

little matchstick which enhanced rather than obscured their fruit aromatics. This was very

enjoyable to judge.

13 Pressing Matters Riesling R9 2014 Gold

14 Pressing Matters Riesling R9 2012 Silver

A very good class, with the 2017s showing as tight, youthful, potentially long living wines, albeit

sometimes a little austere. The older wines showed Tasmanian riesling's great ability to develop

with age into superbly complex, charming wines. The gold medal wines are contrasting styles

and both very worthy golds.

Many plain wines which showed dilution, sweetness and many had phenolic bitterness. The

strike rate for medals was relatively modest. The top winds were clean, fresh and had

drinkability. The trophy wine had purity of fruit, clean floral aromas and balanced sweetness,

brightness and harmony.

35 Velo Chardonnay 2018 Bronze There was some same-ishness in this class. It's as if many wines are being made much the same

way. They are tight and reserved but a bit simple, alcohols seem modest, but many wines lack

generosity. Some wines were too oaky or forward-developed. The top wines were fine and

delicate with subtle oak and pristine fruit driving them.

60 Bangor Abel Tasman Reserve 2018 Bronze An outstanding class of young pinot noir. There is consistency of style and a high level of

winemaking quality. Some wines were a little overripe, but most showed superb ripeness

levels. Tannins, oak and stems were mostly handled very well. We found lighter, finer, aromatic

wines of elegance and charm as well as richer, darker, black-cherry styles and many other

legitimate styles. This is a year to remember.

37 Devil's Corner Mt Amos Pinot Noir 2017 Bronze A remarkably consistent class, even the colours were consistent: deep and dark. Fuller body

and abundant tannins are other hallmarks of the vintage. They are solid rather than delicate

wines and should reward some cellaring. Several wines had rather clunky tannins that

detracted. If criticism is to be levelled, it could be for a lack of wines that had detail and finesse.

26 Dunrobin Estate Rowena 2012 Bronze Top wines show freshness and clarity of fruit, balance and acidity. Some wines showed

premature development particularly amongst the 2016s. A high strike rate but high lights aren’t

super abundant.

6 GlenAyr Shiraz 2017 Top Gold

10 Riversdale Estate Syrah 2016 Bronze A mixed class; several wines showed staleness, but there were also a couple of highlights that

really light the way for shiraz in Tasmania - one lighter, fresher, simpler with bright spicy fruit

and early drinking qualities, the other more structured and serious but still very elegant and

spicy. The future for shiraz in this state seems assured.
