DOUBLESTAR DRILLING SCOPES OF PRACTICE
PROJECT CONSULTATION: EXPERT ADVICE
At Doublestar we are able to assist you with engineering and design phases to determine the most cost-effective
solutions. We look closely at soil information, load types, and overall constructability to find the approach that best suits
your project’s scope.
We have a team of industry professionals who have specialized solely in piling and shoring design for the past 35 years.
All of our design recommendations focus on determining the best methods by using cost effective solutions, while
taking into consideration the site conditions, client design requirements, costs and schedule.
PILING: STRONG ROOTS TO GROW FROM
A strong foundation is the starting block of any successful build. Piling is used to carry foundation loads into deeper and
competent soils. Soils, geography, and structure loads are all evaluated to select the most appropriate and economical
pile type to form the deep foundation of a structure
Doublestar Drilling has the ability and resources to expertly design and install a variety of pile types for jobs of every size
and soil condition. We are able to understand specific soil characteristics and determine the most effective method to
create stability and confidence.
Our services cover a range of load-bearing pile installations, including friction and end-bearing piles, belled piles,
micropile piles, driven piles, sheet piles, and CFA piling.
SHORING: SUPPORT FROM THE SURFACE DOWN
Most commonly used to support deep excavations and slope retention, shoring typically is a top down process that can
be either temporary or permanent for shoring and the retention of soils.
Understanding the project requirements and soil conditions, the most appropriate shoring system and design will be
selected. In many cases, the shoring system is designed to shore and retain the adjacent soils, while assisting in cutting
off ground water during excavations.
We economically design and construct shoring systems safely from 1.5 m to 90 m in depth, and engineer for strength
and security. Shoring can consist of secant piling, soldier pile and lagging, sheet piles, soil nails, and shotcrete.
ANCHORS: PROVEN STRONG
Anchors are installed either permanently or temporarily to support structures such as retaining walls and to provide
slope stabilization.
Before anchors can be installed, a comprehensive site analysis is always the first step to determine the loading capacity
necessary. Doublestar Drilling uses anchor and waler systems in shoring, post-tensioned anchors for earth retention
systems, and retaining wall tiebacks. Anchor and tieback systems are also used to improve slope stability in environments
where sloughing and safety are a concern.
Anchors can be bonded in either overburden soil (known as a “ground anchor”), or in rock (known as a “rock anchor”).
Anchors are designed for tension forces, and can be installed anywhere from 6 m to 45 m, and have design loads of up
to 2500 kilonewtons.
LOAD TESTS: BUILD WITH CONFIDENCE
In order to determine the most economical and effective method to create a solid foundation, a systematic test is
completed to determine the bearing capacity of the soil.
Doublestar Drilling has equipment able to complete load compression and tension test configurations up to 28,000
kilonewtons.
POST-TENSIONING: IMPROVE YOUR CAPACITY
Post-tensioning is a method which is used to apply an engineered tensile load on a steel element. Post-tensioning loads
to concrete. Post-tensioning is commonly used in the construction and engineering of shoring and retaining systems,
anchors, post-tension concrete slabs, bridges, anchor bolts, and soil nails. We have the technical expertise and equipment for the following applications and projects:
• Engineered shoring and retaining systems
• Anchors
• Tie-back anchors
• Permanent anchors
• Post-tension strands
• Tie-rods
• Anchor bolts
• Soil nails

VIBRATORY HAMMER WORK: WORK WITH PRIDE
A vibratory hammer works by creating rapid vibrations when connected to piling material, causing the soil to enter
a semi-liquid state. This aids in the installation or removal of certain pile types when necessary.
Our vibratory hammer work includes installing sheet piles, installing pipe piles, and pile removal.
GROUTING: WE DELIVER PERMANENCE
Grouting can be used to stabilize foundations and improve poor soils. Doublestar has a fleet of portable and truck
mounted grout units capable of grouting and pumping up to 50m3 per hour. We have several grouting options and
types to meet the need of any project.
Specialized options can include pressure grouting, tremie void grouting, low-mobility grouting, and jet grouting.
SPECIALITY DRILLING & SOLUTIONS
When drilling conditions are difficult, specialized tools and drilling methods may be required. Doublestar is proud to offer
the widest range of specialized foundation and shoring drilling equipment in Western Canada. Doublestar has a fleet of specialized drilling equipment including:
• piling drills capable of drilling in less than 4.0m of headroom
• electric drills designed for indoor or confined space drilling
• high-reach drills capable of drilling up to 18 m above grade or below grade
• equipment designed specifically for remote access including only helicopter access
We offer specialized drilling methods for a variety of segmental casing where large and deep piles are installed in poor
soil conditions. This process is applied when casing is required to seal a drilled shaft beyond the depths that a drill rig
can install in one piece due height or weight restrictions. We can also use an oscillator to assist the drill rig in installing
and pulling casing.
