PROMOTINGWe build stronger communities by promoting the value of volunteerism and the nonprofit sector in Alberta.

National Volunteer Week (NVW) celebrates volunteerism across Canada. Working with Volunteer Canada, we help to promote NVW to organizations and communities across Alberta.

The Government of Alberta provides us $65,000 in Enhancement Funding, which we distribute to 140 communities across the province to assist in celebrating volunteers who make Alberta a great place to live, work, and play.

During NVW 2014, Volunteerville.ca was launched. It is an interactive way to visually celebrate the contributions of volunteers on social media. Volunteerville aims to create a powerful narrative about volunteering in the province. This collective narrative shows the impact and importance of volunteers.

LEARNINGWe continue to explore ways to create learning opportunities and connect organizations to existing resources.

We explored redeveloping Knowledge Connector into Learning Connector, creating a partnership with eCampusAlberta and the Community Learning Network. The new platform provides users with a knowledge profile and related learning resources.

CONNECTINGWe encourage relationships between organizations, people, and ideas to create mutually beneficial opportunities.

In 2014, we reinforced and expanded relationships with capacity builders in Alberta and across Canada; working toward more collaborative agendas and partnerships to maximize resources and expanding reach in the nonprofit sector. We are improving communications with our membership through a new relationship management system and streamlined communications.

We engaged the community of Fort Macleod as a partner community in Generative Conversations. Our project team met with the Fort Macleod team to plan a two-day conversation in early 2015. Generative Conversations aims to support communities in discovering new possibilities and directions that allow the unimaginable to becomeachievable.

We also partnered with the Community Development Unit, Government of Alberta, on a Social Network Mapping Project. We mapped 168 member organizations and identified where connections exist and the potential for new connections.

ADVOCATINGWe recognize and address the opportunities and challenges affecting organizations in the nonprofit sector.

We work with members, partners, and funders to create conversations that foster shared solutions and develop opportunites in the nonprofit sector and Alberta’s communities. We continue to be involved at decision-making tables and advisory committees in Alberta and across Canada to recommend, communicate, and influence change.

We participated on a national and provincial level in conversations about Volunteer Police Information Checks (VPIC). We convened conversations with provincial stakeholders to build awareness and identify the issues. We revisited delivery mechanisms for VPIC’s, a program that is now in the sixth year of operation.

VPIC subsidized:

808 organizations

35, 496 police information checks Saving nonprofits $532, 328

STRENGTHENINGWe work strategically to develop internal capacity to support the mission and vision of our organization and our member organizations.

As part of our rebrand process, we completed an internal operational review, conducted program alignment meetings, participated in team building activities and shifted our internal culture.

Our Board of Directors implemented a new generative board governance model and revised the board orientation process to better engage new board members. A designated reserve fund was approved in 2014 to address future strategic funding needs.

Through a partnership with OASSIS Employee Benefit Plan, 93 member organizations have strengthened their HR practices to include employee benefits.

The Serving Communities Internship Program (SCiP) entered its fourth year in August 2014 and continues to help strengthen the capacity of the nonprofit sector. This successful program connects post-secondary students and nonprofit organizations in communities across Alberta. Students participate in a meaningful, skill-based internship and organizations are able to accomplish more with a skilled student. Once internships are complete, students receive a $1000 bursary from the Government of Alberta.

From August 2013 - August 2014:

737 completed internships

242 organizations with interns

92% of students see the nonprofit sector as a place for future employmentOUR MEMBERS

We listen to our members, and share information and resources. We maintain connections in Alberta and across Canada.

Overall well-being, community resiliency, and social innovation are shared responsiblities. Our membership network is a pathway to collective impact. Working together improves our ability to serve Alberta communities.

WORKING TOGETHER IN ALBERTAWe focus on workforce development and network stewardship for the nonprofit sector in Alberta.

We reflect the collective voice of our membership and other nonprofit organizations across the province. We work to elevate the important issues, successes, and challenges of the sector, establishing a united voice focused on enhancing the impact of the nonprofit sector and celebrating volunteerism.

Our work is reflected in five simple words: promoting, learning, connecting, advocating, strengthening.
