The Korean marine equipment industry has grown in tandem with the domesticshipbuilding sector, which has reached the pinnacle of the global market. Markingthe 30th anniversary of its foundation in 2010, Korea Marine Equipment Association(KOMEA) has been navigating the domestic and international maritime scene forthree decades, making significant contributions to the development of its memberenterprises and their clients and partners.

KOMEA's members number around 160. But the fact that KOMEA membercompanies account for about 80% of the total marine equipment trade volumereflects the real value of KOMEA's role.

Of particular note, KOMEA has launched a Global Service Center managed by theassociation and supported by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. This landmarkproject is in the process of establishing the infrastructure for a worldwide after-service (A/S) hub that will feature the benefits of ubiquitous service -- anytime,anywhere, any device, any network, any service. It is being designed to be avaluable partner to our clients’ blue-ocean voyage across the six continents and fiveoceans.

Statistical Highlights

In 2009, ship machinery & equipmentproduction increased to 13.55 trillion won, up8.9% from 12.46 trillion won in 2008, keepingpace with the higher level of ship completionsfor the year, according to KOMEA’s preliminaryestimate.

Machinery & equipment output in 2008consisted of 683 billion won in hulls; 7.15 trillionwon in engines & machinery; 3.26 trillion wonin outfittings; and 1.37 trillion won in electric &electronics.

Crossing the 13.5 Trillion Won Level

In 2009, marine equipment sales exceeded12.6 trillion won, according to a KOMEApreliminary estimate, which represented 125%of KOMEA members’ sales volume. Theshipbuilding segment accounted for 41.8% ofthe total marine equipment sales volume.

Sales of Korean marine equipment soared350% during the 2001-2009 period, scoring anannual average of 48% and exhibiting thedynamic expansion of the Korean marineequipment industry.

Statistical Highlights

Direct exports of Korean marine equipmentreached US$1,306 million in 2009, a 4.8-foldexpansion over the US$268.7 million achievedin 2000.

In 2008, engine & machinery year-on year ledexport growth with positive 51.2% growth,followed by hulls with 19.9%, electric &electronics with 12.9% and outfittings at minus15.2%.

By sector, engines & machinery recorded thehighest growth rate at 6.6-fold during the 2002-2009 period, followed by outfittings at 2.1-fold,electric & electronics at 1.9-fold and hulls at 1.8-fold.

Korea’s combined marine equipmentworkforce stood at 69,611 in 2009, a slightdecline of 270 persons from the preceding year.However, compared with 2000, the total was anincrease of 8,772.

A breakdown of the workforce, according toKOMEA’s estimate in 2008, finds thatadministrative staff accounts for 20%, engineers21%, technical & skilled workers 56% andothers 3%.

Meanwhile, total manpower at the shipyardsacross Korea topped 107,400 as of the end of2009, up 5.6% from approximately 101,600 in2008.

Activities with Global Focus

Laying Foundation to Launch Infrastructure for After-Service Hub

In 2009, KOMEA launched a landmark global after-service (A/S) hubinfrastructure project, enlisting financial support from the government.

To carry out this massive project, 3 billion won was invested in thefirst year to establish the Korean Marine Equipment Global ServiceCenter (KOMEC).

Headquartered at Noksan National Industrial Complex in Busan, Korea,the center is now poised to become a globally branded hub for marineequipment after-service with a web-based single window, seamlessinformation & knowledge network and ubiquitous service tailored to therequirements of users.

International & Domestic Exhibitions

Norshipping 2009

KOMEA provided the leadership for nine Korean marine equipmentcompanies plus two related organizations to participate in the KoreanPavilion at Norshipping 2009, which took place June 9-12 in Oslo,Norway.

Korea’s marine equipment companies showcased their high-tech, highquality products at one of the world’s renowned maritime exhibitions. In particular, they endeavored to displayproducts and services related to ocean-based plants and specialty ships.

Marinetec China 2009

With KOMEA’s support and services, 27 Korean companies and 2institutions took part in Marinetec China 2009, held in Shanghai fromDecember 1 to 4.

The scope of Korean participation in this exhibition represented a 30%increase over the previous event, an indication of growing Koreaninterest in the snowballing Chinese market.

Marine Equipment Exports Hit US$1.24 Bil.

KOMEA member companies' marine equipment exports posted US$1.24billion in 2008. China was the largest importer of Korean marineequipment with US$596.5 million. Japan was second with US$163million, followed closely by the EU with US$141.2 million. Othercountries imported a total of US$339.5 million worth of Korean marineequipment in the same year.

The nation's imports of marine equipment have been growing at an annual average of 13.8% in recent yearsowing to the brisk business performance of the shipbuilding industry. The ratio of exports to total sales is about12%.

In terms of exports by item and ratio, remarkable growth has been achieved centering mainly on marine enginesand related machinery since 2001, while the export ratios of other fields have shown a slight downward trend.

Production in the marine equipment industry is expected to expandsteadily in the future, linked to the growth trend of the shipbuildingindustry, while both imports and exports also are likely to increase withenhanced localization rates.

KORMARINE 2009

KOMEA organized and hosted KORMARINE 2009 October 21-24 atBEXCO in Busan. This event attracted 851 companies from 38 countries,while the Korean Pavilion, sized at nearly 1,600 square meters, housed42 domestic companies.

Bilateral Cooperation

KOMEA, on behalf of its member companies, has continued to build a global network through the conclusion ofmemorandums of understanding and other activities.

Korea-Vietnam MOU

On December 1, 2009, a KOMEA delegation, led by Chairman ParkYoon So, visited Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (VINASHIN)and signed an MOU designed to promote increased cooperationbetween the maritime industries of the two countries.

The MOU provided that the two organizations would mutuallycooperate so that Korea’s marine equipment could be supplied smoothlyto Vietnamese shipyards; that both parties would contribute to thedevelopment of Vietnamese shipyards through the smooth supply ofKorean products; that the two sides would pursue enhancement of theirbilateral relationship and development strategies through continuous mutual exchanges; and that both partieswould also pursue additional opportunities to promote mutual cooperation.

Korea-Japan Marine Equipment Meeting

Marine equipment business executives from Korea and Japan met inBusan, Korea, October 23-24 to explore opportunities to promotegreater cooperation and collaboration in the marine equipment sector.

KOMEA Chairman Park Youn-So led the Korean delegation whileZenshichi Akasaka, president of Japan Marine Equipment Association,headed the Japanese participation in the bilateral meeting.

On & Offline Marine Equipment Publications

KOMEA published the 2009 Korea Marine Equipment Directory both on and offline, featuring companyintroductions, products, services, business areas, etc. This publication, easily accessed from anywhere in the world,



was designed to provide concise and useful information to potentialforeign buyers and business partners around the globe.

Meanwhile, the association also published and distributed “MarineEquipment Korea 2009,” a comprehensive guidebook, featuring thestatus and vision of the Korea marine equipment industry, KOMEA’smission, member company profiles, etc.

Projects to Enhance Member Companies’ Competitiveness

Joint Purchase Project

In 2009, KOMEA continued to conduct a joint steel plate purchase program designed to help member companiesimprove price competitiveness by providing lower-cost steel plate on a timely schedule. Illustratively, KOMEApurchased 12,150 tons of steel plate, valued at 11.79 million won, directly from POSCO and distributed thematerial to 21 member companies.

KOMEA Forum

Providing opportunities to share and pool the wisdom necessary to thesustainable development of the marine equipment industry, KOMEAorganized a KOMEA Forum on two occasions in 2009, on May 20 andOctober 22.

The forum featured presentations on the marine equipment industrylandscape and vision as well as a special session with the topmanagement officials of Korean shipbuilding companies.

Value Networking & Win-Win Cooperation

KOMEA is a key member of the consultative meeting of chief executivesof shipbuilding and marine-related organizations. The purpose of themeeting is the exchange of information and establishment of acooperation system between shipbuilding and marine equipmentbusiness communities.

KOMEA representatives also participate in meetings of officials of majorshipbuilding companies in charge of marine equipment-related matters.These meetings aim to sustain a stable supply of marine equipment toshipyards and to expand activities designed to reduce the cost of equipment through standardization andexchange of relevant information and know-how.



KOMEA also has teamed up with Korea Shipbuilders’ Association (KOSHIPA) to organize a win-win cooperationcommittee comprised of large and small companies in the maritime sector. The committee explores opportunitiesfor joint marketing and to introduce a certification system for marine equipment manufacturers.

Information Exchange Among Member Companies

Publications

KOMEA is endeavoring to invigorate the exchange of information and know-how among its members.

Last year, the association launched two major publication projects -- History of the Korean Marine EquipmentIndustry and The 30-Year History of KOMEA. These two publications provide member companies with a commoninsight and inspiration regarding the marine equipment business at home and abroad.

KOMEA also issues regular publications, including KOMEA News Bulletin, Marine Equipment Information, etc., toprovide timely information to interested parties.

Government Relations Activities

As a bridge between the government and marineequipment companies, KOMEA plays a key role inincreasing the competitiveness of its members andexpanding the business horizon for the industry.

Sealing Pact for Marine EquipmentCompetitiveness Enhancement

Building upon the reliability established betweenthe government and member companies, KOMEAlast year launched a Global Service Center as partof an agreement with the government for thereinforcement of the marine equipment industry.This landmark project features a global after-service (A/S) hub infrastructure with financialsupport from the government.

Overseas Marketing Capacity Reinforcement Project for Offshore Plants

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy entrusted KOMEA to carry out an overseas marketing capacity reinforcementproject for offshore plants. The beneficiary items are FPSO facilities in connection with the ministry’s support forleading industries.

Promote Expanded Supply of Domestic Equipment & Materials

For replacement of equipment and materials installed on domestic frigates, patrol boats, etc. with domesticproducts, KOMEA plans to provide diverse information, including possibility of domestic production andcharacteristics of product specifications, to related organizations.

Expanding Access to Join the Ranks of World-Class Products

Korea, on the strength of its position as the world's leading shipbuildingnation, aims to become a global supply base for marine equipment. In2015, the Korean marine equipment sales volume is expected to reachabout US$18 billion.
