Nelson Hospital admitted 17,356 people during the last financial year, 9872 of those undergoing the knife for a theatre procedure and 996 babies were born. e statistics, released by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, show a slight increase in most areas, including births and admissions in the 2010/11 financial year. But outpatient visits and meals provided bucked the trend, both down on the previous year. e figures show that on an average day 48 people were admitted to Nelson Hospital, with a further 70 presented to the Emergency Department, while three ba- bies were born. Twenty seven people had a theatre proce- dure on an average day while close to 15,000kg of laundry was washed. One significant drop is meals provided which slipped from an average of 592 a day to just 395. Medical Surgical Service Di- rector Peter Bramley says the slight increases may be due to the Christchurch earthquake. “We also know through our elective services data that there were more complex procedures completed in the 2011 year.” e figures also show that more than a million laborato- ry tests were done in Nelson, up 26,000 on the year before and 49,298 radiology exami- nations completed, a slight decrease on 2009/10. One number that was only slightly up on last year was the number of people pre- sented to the Emergency De- partment. In 2009/10 financial year 25,383 people went to the department while a year later just 221 extra people turned up. Thanks to the unwavering resolve of these volunteers Nelson Youth Theatre’s fu-

WOW! What a show for local artistsNelson designers have cleaned up in the Men Unleased section of the Brancott Estate World of WearableArt Awards Show in Wellington over the weekend.Julie Brawley, of Richmond, won the section, with Tahuanui’s Ruth Carlile com-ing third and Nelson’s Mike Ward gaining an honourable mention.Across the Nelson and Tas-man region there were 16 fi-nalists and the local winners were amongst 35 winners of this year’s show, sharing the $150,000 prize pool. All of Nelson’s 2011 winning de-signers have been long time WOW entrants and past win-ners.The World of WearableArt is a concept created in 1987 by Suzie Moncrieff, to take art off the wall and adorn the human form, then showcase each creation in a dramatic setting. A new way to experi-ence art and fashion was born back then, and Suzie Moncri-eff called it WearableArt.Ruth Carlile, a personal assis-tant, has submitted seven gar-ments to WOW since 2002, and her previous accolades include being placed as a sec-tion winner in 2002, a section runner up in 2005, and a Highly Commended in 2006. She has achieved a second placing this year with her design Amour Amour, which she says is something old, new borrowed and blue – an integration of elegance and armour.“In my garment, the reinvented groom comple-ments his new bride, handsomely fitted out in the armour of love,” she says.

“My chosen material for the garment has been sourced from over 300 soy milk containers be-cause it annoys me that they cannot be recycled locally, while the highlights of the groom’s bou-quet are washing powder cups.”

Suzie Moncrieff, WOW founder and judge says it is a very clever use of material. “This garment is beautifully constructed out of soy milk containers. “It is a very el-egant twist on the traditional wedding day suit.”Nelson City Councillor Mike Ward was a Supreme WOW Winner in 2005, and this year’s entry Yes Dear... A Pas De Deux is his 16th submis-sion to WOW, and his fourth to receive a placing.Ward says his garment is an acknowledgement of fall-ing sperm count, making the groom an accessory, albeit a gorgeous one.“I needed an excuse to make the groom a puppet of the bride, and to use extreme makeup, following a view-ing of The Natural World in which Pocahontas’ mates were gorgeously war paint-ed,” he says. “The ‘futuristic’ suggestion in the designer’s kit led to the idea of falling

sperm count ultimately making the male some-what redundant, and the idea that he had become the ultimate gorgeous accessory.”Suzie Moncrieff says she loves the humour in the garment. “The puppetry on stage, with the groom appearing to be an accessory to the bride, is also very clever. It is beautifully created, beautifully designed and has a wonderful colour palate.”

The Hyundai i-flow concept car carries forward the company’s evocative new form language, ‘flu-idic sculpture’. The flowing, elegant lines not only create a bionic, futuristic shape, but also con-tribute to exceptional aerodynamics, helping to reduce the car’s CO2 output to just 85g/km and fuel consumption to only 3l/100km. Hyundai’s first diesel hybrid powertrain is also a key factor in delivering such an environmentally-conscious return, as is the application of next-generation materials and technologies developed in coop-eration with leading chemical company BASF. With an overall length of 4.780mm and a 2.800mm wheelbase, the i-flow brings new ideas and a pioneering form to the traditional Europe-an D-segment. The dramatically-sculpted forms of the interior and exterior make for a striking sports sedan, and its width and height (1.850mm and 1.420mm respectively) give it an athletic stance. The name i-flow reflects the exceptionally aerodynamic shape and the flowing lines of the concept car’s eye-catching styling, and retains the ‘i’ prefix of Hyundai’s established alphanumeric nomenclature for Europe. In 2011 Hyundai will bring into production a new challenger in the segment, drawing on the i-flow’s sleek styling and innovative technology. Thomas Buerkle, Chief Designer at Hyundai Motor Europe, appraises the design concept of i-flow, or HED-7, the seventh in a series of daring concept cars to be born in the Russelsheim styl-

ing studio: “The first impression of i-flow is the striking appearance generated through feminine sculptural layers combined with broad, athletic proportions. The rearward-oriented peak of the roof and distinctive main volume give an ultra-modern interpretation of the sedan genre. These unique proportions are complemented by the long tail and the short front overhang, features which were inspired by aerodynamic motives. “Sporting intentions are emphasized through in-novative active aero elements, such as the adap-tive front spoiler and side rocker blade. Sophisti-cated, futuristic front and rear light elements are cradled like sparkling jewels within the car’s flow-ing planes, and the signature Hyundai hexagonal grille completes the frontal aspect. “The sense of agility and focused aerodynamics is further en-forced by the glass roof, with its semi-transparent dye-sensitized solar cells connecting the front and rear screens to create an integral design unit. The roof and door glazing blend to form a uni-fied shell, undercutting the floating C-pillar to produce an undisturbed, aerodynamic canopy. These daring, refined details complement the i-flow’s overall appearance to culminate in a bold design statement which advances Hyundai’s flu-idic sculpture philosophy.” So watch this space as this car could be coming to a showroom near you soon. For more details on the Hyundai range come and see the team at Bowater Hyundai at 45 Hardy St, Nelson.

Nelson City Council will consider the future of the Montgomery Square upgrade project and how best to move the project forward following the High Court decision earlier this year. That decision prohibited council from accepting tenders to carry out the original work proposed in Montgomery Square, and directed council to undertake consultation, in accordance with the Local Government Act 2002, on the proposed work. Dr David Jackson, Nelson City Council’s princi-pal adviser of city development, says the consul-tation process will be carefully reviewed, taking

account of that and other court decisions, and will take the project right back to the drawing board. “We won’t simply be revisiting the pre-vious plan. Should council decide it wishes to continue with its proposal to upgrade Montgom-ery Square, it will start with a blank page and get public feedback on how – or indeed if – the community wants to see Montgomery Square change,” he says.A draft outline of the issues and objectives around the Square and its surrounds will be part of the discussion at a special council meeting be-ing held this Thursday.

Local boy coming home for RWCFLY LIKE AN EAGLE: Nelson man Junior Sifa will return home in September to play in Nelson for the United States in the Rugby World Cup. Photo: Andrew Board.

As Nelsonians prepare to head along to Trafal-gar Park to watch Italy play the United States in less than a month, one local man is getting ready to play in it.Former Nelson Bays and Tasman Makos mid-fielder Junior Sifa was last week selected in the US Eagles squad to play in the Rugby World Cup and he says he is excited to once again play at Trafalgar Park. “I think the last time I played there was for Nelson Bays so I’m really look-ing forward to hopefully getting a run out there again.”Junior, who qualifies for the Eagles because he was born in American Samoa, grew up in New Zealand and played for the inaugural Tasman Makos team before plying his trade off-shore in Scotland and Ireland. He was selected for the cup by US coach and for-mer Ireland boss, Eddie O’Sullivan.Junior says the squad is excited about the tour-nament but for him the highlight will be the Nelson game. “My girlfriend and mates still live in Nelson so playing in front of them for such a huge game

will be awesome.“If we don’t get to play against the All Blacks then playing in Nelson is the next best thing. I’m really excited about it.”Junior played club rugby for Waimea Old Boys and to celebrate that link Richmond has or-ganised several American-themed parties and events, including a parade down Queen St, block party in Sundial Square and boot party at the A&P Showgrounds in the hours before the Italy v USA game on September 27.Junior says hearing of people getting behind the team will further boost his side ahead of the cri-cial game.“The Italy game will be a big one for us, they will be tough. I think we have a chance against them so the more support we can get in Nelson the better.”He says he isn’t sure how many of his friends and family will be at the game cheering him on but “the more the better”.Junior will be the second Nelsonian involved in the Rugby World Cup, with Mako Ben Franks in the All Blacks squad for the tournament.

Nelson/Tasman is world’s 250th safe communitiesNelson Tasman was officially desig-nated as an International Safe Com-munity at a ceremony at Saxton Field this morning. International Safe Communities is a World Health Organisation (WHO) concept that recognises safety as “a universal concern and a responsibil-ity for all”. This approach to com-munity safety encour-ages greater cooperation and collaboration be-tween non-government organisations, the busi-ness sector, local and government agencies. Nelson and Tasman are the 19th and 20th com-munities in New Zealand to receive this international designation that recognises the huge amount of work that is happening at all levels to make this a safe place to live.Safe at the Top has been aiming for this goal since 2008 but stress that achieving the International Safe Community status is not an end, simply a milestone on a continuing

journey. Nelson Bays Police Area Commander Brian McGurk has been a member of the Safe at the Top working group throughout. He says the designation is great news.“It’s an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved but also the beginning of the next phase. We hope now to get even more groups

and individuals joining us as we work towards making the Nelson and Tasman communities safer.”Nelson MP Nick Smith, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Nel-son mayor Aldo Miccio all spoke at this morn-

ing’s event and praised the work of the Safe at the Top group. Safe at the Top coordinator Barbara Graves says the designation is excit-ing and well-deserved.“It’s been a lot of cooperation and work but for the region, to get this is exciting.”The group is the 250th to gain the designation worldwide.

It’s an opportunity to celebrate what has been achieved but

also the beginning of the next phase.

This was a lot of fun last time and the volunteers had as much fun as those sitting at the tables. They need people from 8am until 2.30pm, usually in 2-3 hour shifts. Time is running out to get the group together, so if you can help, get in touch as soon as possible. Please contact Pat Curry [email protected] or phone 547 6769 or 027 244 8819.

• John Key has once again donated a ‘doo-dle’ for the Big Brothers Big Sisters ‘bid for this kid’ auction being held on Thursday. Last year his doodle fetched $290 after strong bidding. This is the second time the ‘bid for this kid’ auction has been staged at the Ernest Rutherford Retirement Village. Not that there will be any kids being sold, but a host of wonderful items will go under the hammer, wielded by auctioneer extraor-dinaire Jeff Rackley, as well as a silent auc-tion. Tickets cost $10 (which includes your entry, first drink and nibbles). Door sales are available or you can collect tickets from the Nelson Police Station (cash sales only) or or-der them from [email protected] or by calling 545 9864.

• Nelson City Council has organised free face painting for fans as they walk into Trafalgar Park on match days. The service, called Fanbrush, will have the colours of the country flags that are playing in Nelson.

• The Game On festival officially launches this Thursday, September 1. The festival is being held in conjunction with the REAL NZ festival, to coincide with the Rugby World Cup. The first event on the festival calendar is the Rugby - celebrating grass-roots and All Blacks exhibition at the Nelson Provincial Museum.

Every now and then in the middle of the night John “Johnny Go-Kart” Couling slips out of his Stoke house and into the caravan in his back yard. He sleeps easier in a caravan. It’s not that surprising when you lis-ten to John’s life story. He left home at 13 to join the circus (yes, this is for real). He worked on the road for the circus for several years and with sev-eral types of animals before moving into carnavils. “I’m a gypsy at heart and there is probably only three fam-ilies like us left in New Zealand. I feel comfortable on the road.”Despite that John has angina and

the warm sunny climate of Nelson is where he feels healthier, so he has brought his carnavil business with him. Included in his shed of goodies are giant blow up slides, merry-go-rounds, games and other activities. He says his son is continuing to run the business in Christchurch while he operates his JBC Shows in Nelson. Among the big events he is due to set up at over the next few months is the Italian Festival in Nelson.“Although I like to keep moving I like Nelson and hopefully we can get some of the gear out for people to en-joy over the next few years.”

Graham Weir won a Good Neighbour of the Year award for his generosity towards those liv-ing around him, but his goodwill extends much further, in about a 20 kilometre radius from his home in fact.Graham was one of two winners of the Good Neighbour of Year award for Stoke. The annual awards recognise the region’s top neighbours in the four community constable areas of Stoke, Victory, Tahunanui and Nelson city. This year the quality and quantity of Stoke entrants made it too tough for judges to decide on an outright winner so it handed it jointly to Graham and Robyn Hollis.Graham’s neighbours say they entered him be-cause he is a “lovely man” who is forever biking around to drop off vegetables from his own gar-den and never asks for anything in return. The former bushman and freezing worker says biking is one of his passions. He tries to get out on the bike every day and ride about 20 kilome-tres and along the way makes sure he does his bit. “I always take my kit with me so if I ever see anyone with a puncture or who needs help I stop and give them a hand.”His passion has been such that in 11 years of owning his last bike he rode 75,000kms.

Graham built his house for his family in 1972 and is the longest surviving person in his neigh-bourhood. “I’m the only orginal left. When I built here there was only one house on the corner and the rest was paddocks, now it’s full with houses.” But despite people coming and going, he has done his best to make people feel welcome. He is known as the street handyman, fixing plumbing,

electrical work and of course, gardening.Gardening is Graham’s other major pas-sion and his meticulous garden serves several homes with Graham biking around and dropping off whatever is in

season. He says he does as much as he can to help people in the neighbourhood and makes sure everyone is ok. His duties also include cleaning up the neigh-bourhood. Each week Graham collects about two shopping bags of aluminium cans for the SPCA. “My cobber, he picks them up from me and takes them to his cobber and when he has a trailer load he sells them and takes the cheque up to the SPCA.”From giving away fresh vegetables to making sure he always has a smile for his neighbours, Graham Weir is a well-deserved ‘Good Neighbour of the Year’ winner.

Ticket sales are booming for this year’s Nelson Arts Festival and lo-cals are urged to get in early. Nelson City Council festival direc-tor Sophie Kelly says sales are track-ing well ahead of previous years with some clear favourites already emerging. “We’re picking the Loons new caba-ret show Berlin Burlesque at the Theatre Royal to be our first sell out, and there will be more,” she says. “With the Masters Games in town plus the rugby visitors we really want to encourage Nelsonians to get tickets while they can.”This Sunday, September 4, is the last day for the early bird discount on festival tickets. Sophie says this is a saving of around $4 per seat, which mounts up for groups or peo-ple buying tickets for several shows. Sophie recommends becoming a ‘festival friend’ as another excellent way to save on tickets. She says this year’s festival pro-gramme delivers a feast of theatre and music from New Zealand and afar. “The message we have for Nelson people is that this is their festival, it’s a time to say goodbye to winter, to get out and try something new

and to be really proud of living in a vibrant arty city,” she says. “If you haven’t ever taken the plunge and gone along to a festival show, make this the year you do.”And Sophie encourages ticket buy-ers to take a risk or two: “Rather than going for the safe and famil-iar, festival time is an opportunity to stretch your boundaries and try something like Random Acts of God – inspired by the Christchurch earthquakes, a six piece band and a troupe of four dancers explore the question of what we do when life throws a curve ball.”The arts festival begins on Octo-ber 7 with the Masked Parade and continues with 17 days of music and theatre at the Suter, the Theatre Royal, the Festival Tent at Founders and the Granary Festival Café where early evening music shows are free. The Nelson Arts Festival is pro-duced by the Nelson City Council as a celebration for locals and an attraction for visitors. This year’s event is part of the Game On Fes-tival, which showcases the region to our rugby visitors. Find out more at www.nelsonarts-festival.co.nz or call Everyman Re-cords 548 3083.

Nelson children going for a B4 School Check will now get a free WotWots book and sticker, thanks to a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Pukeko Pictures. The adventurous alien twosome, SpottyWot and DottyWot, who star in the WotWots, an animated televi-sion series created by Weta Work-shop-based Pukeko Pictures, are the new ambassadors for the Ministry’s B4 School Checks. The partnership was launched last week in Wellington by Minister of Health Tony Ryall, and Weta Work-shop’s co-founder Sir Richard Taylor.Nelson Marlbor-ough Public Health and Oral Health, Service Manager, Stephanie Read says she hopes the giveaway will make parents in Nelson and Marlborough even more moti-vated to take their four year olds for a B4 School Check.“The B4 School Check is free, and includes an assess-ment of a child’s hearing, eyesight, teeth and gums,

height and weight, behaviour and development. It can pick up any health issues children have well be-fore they start school, so those issues can be addressed. “Four year olds having a check now have the bonus of receiving a free WotWots colour-ing-in, activity or board book and sticker,” says Stephanie.Nationwide, over 100,000 children have had a B4 School Check. To find out more about having a B4 School Check contact the Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service on 546 1800.

She judges, critiques and tastes the best coffee in the world on a daily basis, but now Emma Mark-land Webster has returned to Nelson hoping to increase the region’s top coffee making talents. After a previous 12 year stint living on and off in Nelson, Emma went on to become New Zealand champion and placed fifth at the World Barista Championship in Oslo, Norway, before making the rise to sensory judge just 12 months later, a position she has held since 2003.Emma says winning the New Zealand championship in 2001 came as a surprise, following what she calls a disappointing performance. “I was fairly drunk on the floor when they announced it to be fair. I was an angry person that day because I didn’t do as well as I should have done, so I thought I had completely bombed it and lost it,” says Emma. “Winning didn’t mean that much back in the day, but it kind of verified to me that the industry actually meant something.”With the victory came qual-ification to compete against the rest of the world, a com-petition Emma impressively concluded with a fifth placing. “It was pretty ominous, pretty scar-ing. Even though I had team New Zealand on my shirt, it was just me.”The World Barista Championship, or as Emma puts it; “showcase of espresso,” consists of four espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks within 15 minutes. “It’s about your ability to walk the talk.”

When the New Zealand body was looking for a fresh face for 2003, Emma became a sensory judge at the competition.Emma says drinking the best 54 coffees in the world in one day is definitely a dream job, but it also comes with its share of obscurity, especially when it comes to the signature drinks. “I’ve seen all sorts. There was one signature drink that had

emu jous and kangaroo meat in the drink. It slightly freaked some people out. Nationally we’ve seen a lot of sweet chilli chocolate.”Emma says the major downfall in going miles outside the comfort zone is competitors ignoring the one key factor - the espres-so itself. But not one to shy away from out there creations when it came to her cof-fee, Emma’s signature drink featured a 22 carat gold leaf suspended in lite raw gelatine with a sprinkle of brown sugar atop a layer of cream and a shot of espres-so. “You can go to all of the best cities in the world for espresso coffee but it’s like panning for gold finding

that perfect shot.”Emma, who runs her own barista coffee tui-tion company called Monster Trucks, has been back in Nelson since April and is now teaming up with Pomeroy’s in what its general manager Hayden Thompson hopes will improve the local industry on all levels. “If you can go to a cafe and they’re making a spot on coffee every time, then that’s an advantage to everyone,” he says.

TUESDAY 30 August 2011

It’s been an agonising wait for Tony Davies but the Eng-lish documentary director has finally become one of New Zealand’s newest citizens. Tony and his family are proud Nelson residents, and applied for New Zealand citizenship at the start of this year. After Tony’s wife Judith and their six children were approved, they received a nasty surprise when Tony’s application was rejected because of work related travel.“It was horrible” says Tony. As a director on interna-tional projects, Tony’s work often takes him away from New Zealand, but he says he shouldn’t have been penal-ised, as his income is spent here. He travels internationally around five times a year, di-recting documentaries on sporting events or outdoor adventure competitions and says the travel takes its toll on him.He says he would like to film more projects in New Zea-land, and recently directed Nelson Tasman Tourism’s promotional videos for free, but he says lack of available funding and resources means he needs to work overseas to earn a living.A chance meeting with local MP Nick Smith helped turn the tide on Tony’s citizenship problem, when he of-fered to write a letter on Tony’s behalf. That letter, along with several others from friends and family, was sent to Internal Affairs appealing for an approval. When the news of approval came though, Tony was just about to fly back to New Zealand after covering the Tour de France. He says the news made the long flight home seem more bearable. Tony first fell in love with New Zealand on a two-day film shoot in Christchurch several years ago. “When I got back to England I thought I’d really like to live in New Zealand. My wife dismissed it, but then she saw the immigration forms on the kitchen table.”Tony brought the family out here to live, and they haven’t looked back since. They are keen to integrate into New Zea-land life as much as possible and their younger children par-

take in extra Maori language classes at Nelson Central School.“We didn’t want to become ex-pats. We came here to live as New Zealanders” he says. “The kids don’t talk about the UK. My son gets very upset if anybody calls him English.”Tony isn’t sure what his first act as a fully-fledged New Zea-land citizen will be, but says a hangi sounds like a good idea.He hasn’t received the date of his oath taking ceremony yet, but is still hoping it will happen before the Rugby World Cup, “so I can support the All Blacks with a clear conscience.”

Nelson is stamping its ground as the craft brew-ing capital of New Zealand, with the launch of the Nelson craft beer trail and map tomorrow. With ten breweries, twelve brands of beer, and the only region in New Zealand where hops are grown commercially, Nelson is quite deserving of the title of New Zealand’s craft beer capital. The region also has a long standing history of beer brewing and arguably has the most num-ber of craft beer taps in bars per head of popu-lation. The Craft Brewing Capital of New Zealand In-corporated, a society set up to promote Nelson as New Zealand’s main craft beer region, have decided to promote this with the release of the Nelson craft beer trail and map. Members of the society include Doug Donelan (from New Zea-land Hops) as chairman, the breweries and the craft beer outlets. The map not only provides information about the breweries and the histo-ry of brewing in the region, but also the outlets, annual events, and supporters. To celebrate the release of the craft beer trail and map, there will be an official launch event held at McCashins Brewery on Wednesday 31 August.

It includes the high performance two seat Sportstar trainer from the Czech Republic which David says is both easy and a real joy to fly. NPTs training caters to private pilot and commercial pilot training. The professional pilot program provides the qualifications for those wishing to embark on a career as an airline pilot. All NPTs flying instructors have commercial or airline pilot’s licences as well as NZ Civil Aviation Authority flight instructor qualifications. David Marriott advises anyone who has an interest in flying to come and give it a try – introductory flights offer people a hands on go at what the flying experience is all about.

4 a great barbecue every time....Whether it’s searing a steak, roasting a prime rib or delicately grilling mushrooms - you can rely on a Broil King for perfect results every time. Broil King BBQ’s are manufactured in Canada. They are engineered and designed for extraordinary performance, trapping moisture and flavour around the food as it cooks, providing a consistent and even distribution of heat and speeding up cooking times. The die-cast aluminium ovens retain heat, provide better heat distribution and have the capacity to cook larger cuts of meat plus have a Lifetime Warranty. The Flav-R-Wave cooking system distributes the heat evenly and minimises flare ups by instantly vapourising drippings and distributing the flavours back into the oven as well as protecting the burners. And when you’re finished the clean up couldn’t be easier - simply remove all accessories, close the hood and turn the grill up to full power for five minutes then brush off the incinerated particles from the grids. Why not master the art of barbecuing the 4 Seasons way and share your new found al fresco culinary skills with family and friends time and time again.

It was generally a quiet week for the Port.• Further meetings with Nelson City Council management have led a step closer to the new by-laws being adopted.• The new Super Yacht berth at the end of the coastal berth is nearing completion. This berth is primarily for use of Tasman Sea Shuttles Fer-ry service commencing from September. They will be running to and from Kaiteriteri and the National Park. In addition to the sea shuttle it is planned to accommodate super yachts that

visit the Port at this berth. The pontoon will normally be closed off to the public and those authorised will have an access key.• The Cawthron Institute plans some research around the Port. If you come across their equipment please report it if you damage it, or leave it alone.• We hope you are enjoying this settled weath-er, however be wary of the spring breezes that can appear quickly and with reasonable force.• During the week I observed a single kayaker and a waka out paddling just after the sun had gone down. Jacks OPD certainly did not have it all their own way when they met Prices Pharmacy in the semi final of the Pre-mier Grade played at Saxton Stadium on Saturday. The opening minutes saw the team’s trade goals; however Jacks had a run of six unanswered goals as shooters Leanne Cook and Chel-sea Brooks found their rhythm from the first whistle, while Pric-es struggled to find their target. Jacks looked to have the upper hand, and went into the first break with a 14-9 advantage. The introduction of club stalwart, Leigh Leigh Wiremu at goal shoot injected sta-bility into Prices’ offensive end. How-ever, Jacks moved up a gear in the final minutes of the second quarter to out-score Prices 11-4 and had a handy ten goal lead. Jacks supporters could have been forgiven for feeling comfortable with the substantial lead however Prices were not a spent force and rose to the chal-lenge in the third quar-ter. Leigh Leigh and goal attack Mahina Law converted at ease with the abundance of quality ball they re-ceived from feeders Miranda Hart-Tava and the hard working Pip Lee. Prices took the quarter 18-10 and narrowed the deficit to 40-42. With Prices on the charge, Jacks coach Robyn Leonard was forced to make po-sitional changes to change the mix. Lou-ise Monge-Grasse came off the bench, while Sarah Steele and Anna Miles moved

around one position. Wing defence Jas-mine Walker, sitting on two warnings for consistent infringing, donned the centre bib while Jodi Hikuroa moved to wing attack. The changes were not beneficial to begin

with, and with five unanswered goals Prices drew level at 47 all. Confusion with the replacement rule left Prices at sixes and sevens which led to a loss in momen-tum. And that was the precise

opportunity for Jacks to hammer home a 58-50 win and a berth in the final to be played at Saxton Stadium this Thursday from 6.30pm.Jacks victory was a team effort; however shooters Leanne and Chelsea could be pleased with the combined average of 92 percent while Prices was only 75 per-cent.

the season also gave him the nod for the Matt Davis Cup for most points scored in the season after an outstanding season in which Stoke’s division one side reached the top four before falling to Nelson in the playoffs. The second placed Stoke Women’s team

earned the Symons Trophy for club contri-bution, while divison two standout Chad Lowrie was an obvious recipient of the Scott Cederman Cup for Club Player of the Year.In other major club awards; Abbie Ceder-man received the Christieson Cup for club

contribution, Buddy Gra-ham was handed Chairman’s Cup for attitude, the Kings-bury Family took home the Bill Dabinette Cup for Fam-ily of the Year and Angela Cotton’s 14 tries earned her the Perpetual Trophy for the most tries scored.Tasman Makos flanker Te-vita Koloamatangi proved valuable throughout the injury-ravaged season and received the Cowman Rose-bowl for division one player of the year. Front rower Mi-

chael Tyler’s comeback was a notable positive sign in the Stoke campaign and he received the BJ O’Connor Cup for MVP. Flanker John Duff was named division one’s most improved player and Jarrod Aberhart was the best tackler.Center Chad Lowrie followed up his club player of 2011 selection with player of the year for the division two team which just missed out on a playoff spot. Blindside flanker Luke Bartlett was named best tack-ler in his first season of rugby for a number of years. Levi Mortimer had the best en-thusiasm and dedication to the side while Ryan Little, in his first year of senior rugby, performed well in the latter end of the sea-son and was deservedly named most im-proved player. The Stoke Reds were crucially knocked out of the semi finals by eventual runners up Marist, but played enterprising rugby

Angela Cotton received the MVP award

and blindside flanker Holly Fry was the most improved.Stoke’s club coordinator Jo MacLean says the prize giving was a great way to end the season, despite no team bringing home silverware. “It was bloody good,” says Jo. “It was a pretty good turnout and we had a lot more than we usually do, with a great representation from all of the teams. While they didn’t win their respective grades it was a pretty pos-itive night.”

Marist couldn’t shrug off Waimea in title game

Hundreds of kids turned out for the annual Mike 7’s junior rugby tournament at Greenmedows in Stoke over the weekend. The seven-a-side tournament is held for teams in the under 7 to under 10 age bracket. Amongst the teams competing was the Nelson team above. They finished second equal in their grade but missed playing in the final on a count back. They are from back left; Callum McNab, Jackson Davis, Harris McWilliams, Caleb Orr, Connor Rhind and Dyson Smith. Front from left; Nuni Filiai, James Hopgood, Tom Blakeborough, Logan Crabb, Harry Sellwood and Ihaia Downie. Photo: Andrew Board.

Marist was denied its second senior rugby title on Saturday by a cruel bounce of the ball, handing de-fending champions Waimea Old Boys the title in extra time.Wakatu Hotel Marist scored three tries to Waimea’s two in a tight Car Company division three final, that was decided by a charged down kick and a sweet bounce for the Waimea winger. At half time at Jubilee Park in Richmond the scores were locked at 12 each and at full time they were tied at 19 apiece. Marist looked to have the edge

in extra time with a penalty putting them in front with just minutes remaining. But a charged down kick lead to the match-winner for Waimea, their second title in a row.Marist coach Syd Hanna says he was proud of the player’s efforts in the match. “The boys did extremely well. We started and fin-ished the season with the same squad and didn’t rely on ring-ins from higher grades. We should have won the game but at the end of the day it was a great game of rugby.”

GET OFF: Wakatu Hotel Marist winger Sinipata (Butter) Laiseini shrugs off a Waimea defender in his sides loss on Saturday. Sinipata scored two tries and was Marist’s player of the day on Saturday. Photo: Blair Hall/www.photoaction.co.nz.
