    Personal branding

The age of the survival of the fittest Organizations have to respond to the rapid changes of

technology, hence employees have to cope with thechange of duties and job scope, or even a new job!

Think of yourself as a company Need to be able to sell our own skills, experience and

potential The concept of Personal Branding

E.g. Nike, Starbucks, Harley Davidson, people knowwhat they are, people can relate to them This approach can be used in career planning

    Personal branding

Taking control of your image Knowing what you have to offer the world and your market Knowing what makes you different from the rest of the

pack Knowing what makes you can stand out and be recognized

    and remembered

    Developing personal branding

Take the time to know yourself Not about building a special image for other people to

see, or trying to be what the employers want If you are creative, outgoing and playful you will not be

successful if you brand yourself with the attributes ofpredictability and steadiness E.g. Volvo is known for the safety of its cars and not for being

    speedy and sporty

E.g. Kancil is known for its economical petrol consumption, notfor its passenger comfort and interior space

Your brand needs to truly reflect you and your strengths

    Verbal business card

Nowadays, the ability to network is a crucial career management skill. Why?

You might find yourself in a situation where you want to approachsomeone or someone approaches you and you have to make a quick

first impression. One way to regain control of your nerves in such a situation is tocreate a 30- second "verbal business card." By doing this, youll beplanning ahead so that you have something to hand if you becomevery nervous or tongue tied. It works best if you think of it as being intwo parts: Part 1: This is me and this is what I do and Part 2: This is what I want

    17/19Professional & Enterprise Development

Work on your verbal business card for the following:

You are at a wedding and have been seated next to someone whoyour uncle says might be a useful person to know. Tell him what youdo, you never know he might be able to fix you up with a job. Sointroduce yourself and find out what he might be able to offer.

You have been given the name and telephone number of someonewho runs their own business and is looking for someone to do somework for them and you could do that work. Ring them up and introduceyourself and get them interested in meeting you for an informaldiscussion about the work.

You put your details in an online CV bank and your mobile phonerings. A woman introduces herself as being from the PersonnelDepartment of a well known company. She says the company haslooked at your details and now want to find out a bit more about you.She invites you to tell her something about yourself. (If you say Whatdo you want to know?, she will reply What do you want to tell me? sodont cop out like that.)
