Exercise can benefit chronic fatigue, study finds!!!As reported by the Journal of Health Psychology, research conducted at AucklandUniversity has found that 68% per cent of patients suffering from chronic fatiguerated regular exercise better or much better than any other treatment they hadreceived to date.
Chronic fatigue affects about one per cent of the population and is characterised bydebilitating fatigues, headaches, sleep disturbance and muscle pain.Monitoring 49 participants, the study divided the volunteers into two groups for a 12-week period. Half were put through an exercise program and had standard medicalcare, while the other half received just standard medical care.Rona moss-Morris, who is a health psychologist and the principal investigator of thestudy says, '68 per cent of the exercise patients in the study rated their 12-weektreatment as better or much better than any other treatment they had received todate.' Physically fitchildren appearto do better in theclassroom
Latest research conductedat the University of Illinoishave found a strongrelationship betweenacademic achievement andfitness scores. The studydemonstrates that exercisemay also improve cognitivefunctioning in older adults.
We have found a strongrelationship between
academic achievement andfitness scores, said DarlaCastelli, a professor ofkinesiology whose area ofexpertise is effective physicaleducation practices. Thosewho scored well inacademics also did well inphysical fitness. We're notsuggesting that if we runmore laps it will make ussmarter, but there does
appear to be a correlation.
Castelli noted that teacherswho work closely with youngand pre-adolescent childrenhave long suspected a linkbetween physical fitnessand cognitive function.
Anecdotal evidence isplentiful, she said, butempirical data to back thoseassumptions have beenharder to come by.
Working with the co-operation of physicaleducation teachers, theresearchers measured thephysical fitness of some 500third, fourth and fifth-graders. They measuredsubjects' aerobic capacity, flexibility and muscle fitness.Cognitive function wasdetermined by analysingscores on standardisedacademic performance testsand by observing andmeasuring Neuro electricand behavioural responsesto stimulus discrimination
tasks.
We looked at therelationship between ageand fitness from both aNeuro electric andbehavioural perspective,Hillman said.
Behaviourally, these effectsshowed up in that these fitchildren made fewer errorsthan sedentary ones,Hillman said. In terms ofresponse speed, the fitchildren were still slowerthan fit and sedentary adults, but were faster than sedentarychildren, he said.
Hillman - who stressed the
preliminary nature of theirfindings - said the researchteam is analysing data for threerelated studies and plans topresent a symposium on theirfindings next spring. There's alot of basic research that needsto go on before we candetermine what underliesachievement, Hillman said.
