Marcia was an active member of the Boston Terrier Club of Detroit. She always brought her beloved Bostons to the shows and took great delight in showing them. Always a

gracious presence in the ring and out. We will miss her smile that could light up the room. We will miss our many lovely chats with her at shows or on the phone.

It is a great comfort to know that she is at the Rainbow Bridge loving all of the Bostons that went there before her.

Marcia will be missed by all of her friends in the Boston Terrier world.

“The American Gentleman”Boston Terriers are sometimes called the “The American Gentleman" because of their calm disposition and formal black and white "tuxedo“ markings, the Boston Terriers are one of America's native breeds. A lively, intelligent, smooth-coated and compactly built dog with short tail, the Boston Terrier comes in three sizes: under 15lb, 15lb to under 20lb, and 20lb to under 25lb. The Boston Terrier is a very friendly dog with an excellent disposition, is highly trainable, and good with children. The Boston Terrier is a member of the non-sporting group and was first registered by the AKC in 1893.

I think back to when we first got

started in the sport. We initially were

looking for a pet – a dog to take

running with us. The idea of a pet

progressed to the thought of getting

a show dog. So we went to a dog

show to see what it was all about and

we watched the Dalmatian judging.

I had no understanding of the breed

standard, ring procedure, or the

judging process. The dogs all looked

about the same to me, and I had no

idea what the judge was doing, let

alone why she made the decisions

she did.

After that first show, we did our

homework. We read the breed

standard and any breed publications

we could get our hands on. We

spent time talking to breeders and

attending dog shows, and we began

to develop a better understanding

of the breed. I remember sitting

ringside in the early days, as my eye

started to develop. I could now find

my way to a good dog, and while I

could single out that dog, it took

time for me to identify the attributes

that made this animal a good one. I

remember sitting with a very good

friend who was far more experienced

in the breed and marveling at how

rapidly Dawn could get to the

details of the animal’s structure –

quickly able to identify the strengths

and weaknesses of the dog being

discussed. While I knew that it all

seemed to fit together properly, she

could tell me exactly why. That’s the

difference 10,000 hours makes.

When we got started in dogs,

my husband was going to be the

Conformation Handler and I was

going to train the dogs in Obedience.

After sitting ringside and watching

people show dogs in conformation,

and finding myself to be an abysmal

failure at obedience, I decided to try

my hand in the show ring. Heck, all

you had to do was run around the

ring with a dog – how hard could

that be!

I went to my first handling class. It

happened to be the week before

the big benched show in California

where we were living at the time. The

class instructor was the professional

handler Laurie Jordan Fenner. I very

quickly found out that running around

the ring properly was not as easy as

it looked and my first go around in

her conformation ring was painful.

Laurie walked up to me and asked,

“Are you showing at Golden Gate

this weekend?” I answered “No” to

which she said under her breath as

she walked away “Thank God”.

I persisted. We came back to class

on a regular basis and six weeks later

I competed at my first dog show. We

placed 3rd. I didn’t drop the lead,

trip over the dog or run up on the

judge. It was in my mind a perfect

performance.

Six years later I ran around the group

ring with my first special. Laurie was

sitting outside the ring watching me.

I think it was the first time she’d seen

me with Ginger and only my third

time in the group ring. We placed

2nd. Afterward Laurie came over

to congratulate me. I think she was

almost as happy as I was. She took

me under her wing and gave me

some advice on showing “in the big

leagues”. Six months later I would

find myself competing against her

and her husband Larry in the Best

in Show ring. That’s the difference

10,000 hours makes.

Nowhere in the sport of dogs is

the concept of 10,000 hours more

apparent than in the whelping box. It

is where the proverbial rubber meets

the road. It is the place, when all goes

right and the planets align that can

make a breeder’s heart sing. And it is

also the place that can test the metal

of even the most committed breeder.

Mother Nature takes no prisoners,

and if you have ever doubted this fact,

just breed a litter.

Planning a breeding draws on all of

the things we have learned in dogs.

It is the one place where it all comes

together – sometimes as we thought,

and sometimes not. I got to know a

very well respected Bulldog breeder.

We were talking one Sunday afternoon

about our goals as breeders. She

said very succinctly to me “I decided

very early on that I wanted to be the

person that people looked for at a

specialty show. You know, the person

that people said “Gosh, I wonder what

Jennifer will have this year”.

We all know who these people are

within our own breeds. They are the

thoughtful people who have invested

years of time and effort in the sport.

Every litter is carefully planned, and

while every litter might not produce

the result desired, over time there is

a consistency and quality that cannot

be denied. They are the people

that are modest in their successes

of which there are usually many and

able to bounce back from the brink

of disaster of which there are always

a few. These people have put in their

10,000 hours multiple times over. They

are the backbone of our sport and

while they may not be in the ring at

every national specialty, you will find

them sitting ringside, because there is

always something else to learn.

Which brings us back to commitment.

To log the 10,000 hours that Gladwell

points to as one of the distinguishing

elements of achieving success, you

must be committed. It can take some

people years to accumulate their

10,000 hours, others never will. But for

those dedicated, passionate folks, the

first 10,000 hours were gone before

they knew it. Their commitment has

carried them through the dark hours

of pain and disappointment and has

been celebrated in the consistent

quality of the progeny that carry

their kennel name. You can be quite

certain of where they’ll be spending

their next 10,000 hours.

Commitment

How about you?

I recently read a book called “Outliers: The Story of Success” written by Malcolm Gladwell. The book attempts to answer the question of why some people succeed and others never reach their potential. I am sure many of you have read the book or have heard about it. There is a concept in the book that resonated with me – the 10,000 hours rule. Gladwell’s premise is that to excel in any endeavor requires an investment of 10,000 hours of effort. I think it is a valid premise and I believe that it applies to just about everything we do in this world, and of course, to the sport of dogs.
