• Mayor eficiencia (la sobrecarga de ATM para tamaños de paquetes IP típicos es de 25%)
• Soporte OAM
• Soporta velocidades de hasta OC-48 (ATM SAR es dificil a esa velocidad)

IP over SONET - Desventajas
• SONET tiene únicamente granularidad de tributarios.
• SONET es para canales de voz y no de datos.
• Es necesario scrambling adicional por encima de la capa SONET

• Tamaño de paquete pequeño Mas de 5 Mpps a tasas OC-48
• Para un tamaño de paquete IP de 300 bytes la tasa que se puede obtener es de 2.035 Gbps

Problemas de POS
• El scrambler de SONET utiliza una secuencia pseudoaleatoria de 7 bits
• Es facil encontrar el periodo (90 datagramas de MTU de Ethernet!)
• Se pueden provocar alarmas LoS/LoF Caida del enlace
• Necesidad de scrambling adicional

Problema de POS• Flag de delineacion de HDLC = Ox7e se
debe “escapar” a Ox7d Ox7e• Se puede incrementar de modo artificial el
tamaño del datagrama• Como resultado se puede alterar el
mecanismo de scheduling.• CONCLUSION: HDLC por encima de
velocidades OC-48 no es tan facil• Otras propuestas: Simplified Data Link de
Lucent (DETROIT chipset)

IP sobre SONET frente a IP sobre WDM
• IP sobre SONET añade sobrecarga a nivel físico que no es necesaria para transporte asíncrono de datos.
• SONET permite mayor granularidad en asignación de ancho de banda (por encima de lightpath)
• En algunos casos como links de muy alta velocidad entre routers puede ser conveniente pero normalmente se necesita una mayor granularidad

Conclusiones
• Las redes ópticas IP se encuentran en sus comienzos: conmutación de wavelengths
• El modo de transferencia (previsible) es a ráfagas: OBS (datos optico y control electrónico)
• El modo de transferencia objetivo es OPS (datos+control óptico).
