Participants reminded of race day animal
welfare obligations Victorian participants should make themselves aware of updated hot
weather and transport policies which outline their animal welfare
responsibilities on race days and trial days.
GRV General Manager – Animal Welfare Dr Gavin Goble
said the updated hot weather and transport policies were developed
after a significant period of engagement and input from participants
across Victoria and had the support of the Welfare Committee and
the Industry Consultative Group.
“These policies are part of our sport’s commitment to making
animal welfare our number one priority and all participants need to
understand and fully adhere to them,” Dr Goble said.
GRV will declare a venue “Hot Weather Affected” if the forecast
temperature is 32C or higher and certain conditions will apply for
that meeting and for travel on that day.
If the forecast temperature is 38oC or above, the meeting will
be postponed or cancelled.
Kennel blocks at all Victorian greyhound racetracks are air
conditioned and the ambient temperature in the blocks are
maintained between 18oC and 24oC.
Stewards may abandon or postpone the meeting if the
temperature in kennel blocks reaches 26oC and cannot be reduced
promptly.
Dr Goble said GRV’s transport policy had also been updated
after consultation with stakeholders including owners, trainers as
well as GRV’s Welfare Committee and Industry Consultative
Group.
“All owners and trainers need to make sure that their
greyhounds arrive at meetings in the best possible condition,” Dr
Goble said.
“To ensure that occurs, GRV has updated its transport policy
soon “Hot Weather Affected” days when greyhounds can only be
transported in air-conditioned trailers and transport vehicles.
“In addition, on “Hot Weather Affected” days, rest stops
must be made every two hours and dogs must not be left unattended
for more than five minutes.”
Participants are also reminded that greyhounds should have
access to water on all race days regardless of weather or
temperature.
“If a participant wants to give their dog a drink immediately
after retrieval from the race kennel (20 minutes before their race)
they can do so under steward supervision,” Dr Goble said.
The new policies will officially come into effect on
December 12.

1998 produced Ground Force, Hotshow Ben, Hotshow
Sam, Hotshow Tex, Milla’s Wish, Sobbing Lass,

to mention her January 1999 litter, by Gun Law Osti,

She also produced winners from an August 2001
litter by Just The Best, and a March 2002 litter by

producing winners from her only two other litters on
file, whelped in December 2012 by Just The Best and

before being retired.
NSW WHELPING REPORT
TURNING our attention to the NSW Whelping Report
for the week ending July 24, our first litter for review is
one of eight pups, registered by the Hallinan Syndicate,
from Clergate, by leading Victorian metropolitan sire,
Barcia Bale (March 2010 Go Wild Teddy x Princess
Bale).
The four dogs and four bitches in the litter are
from the dual Group 3 winner and outstanding
metropolitan performer, Zipping Willow (June 2011
Goodesy x Sirocco Lass), whose dam is by Bond x
Many Tricks (Head Honcho x Miss Cruise).
She is from a litter which included Zipping April,
Zipping Mani, Zipping Rocky, Zipping Rose, Zipping
Summah, Zipping Turbo and Zipping Zorro.
Their good producing dam also has winners on file
from her four other litters, by Bit Chili, Dyna Tron,
Mandagery Man and Mantra Lad.
On the track, Zipping Willow raced 53 times for
the outstanding record of 34 wins and 10 placings,
winning an amazing 20 races over 520 metres at
Wentworth Park (29.35), four over 515 metres at The
Gardens (29.33), where she also won over 400 metres
(22.49) and twice over 520 metres at Dapto (29.48) and
530 metres at Canberra (30.12), with single wins over
400 metres at Maitland (22.42), 515 metres at Gosford
(29.45), 525 metres at The Meadows (30.11) and 400
metres at Richmond (22.63) where she also won over
535 metres (30.42).
She won two Group 3 finals, the 2013 Camberra
Cup and the 2014 Ladies Bracelet at Wentworth Park.
According to my breeding records she has one
previous litter on file, six dogs and three bitches,
whelped in December 2015 by Turanza Bale, so she
certainly has some well bred pups on the ground.

the very well bred bitch, Francine (April 2012 Collision
x First Star), whose dam is by Brett Lee x Sutro Star
(Token Prince x Ready To Rain).
With six bitches in the litter I would imagine there
will be plenty of interest from potential buyers with
future breeding in mind.
Francine was the only pup named from her litter,
with her dam, First Star having 18 other named
offspring on file from three other litters, whelped in
September 2010 by Elite State, June 2011 by Bit Chili
and January 2013 by Big Daddy Cool.
On the track, Francine raced 26 times for 11 wins
and five placings, winning five times over 400 metres at
Gosford (22.94), three times over 515 metres at The
Gardens (30.06) and three times over 400 metres at
Maitland (22.62).
Looking through her form line, it is worth noting
she was placed in three of her five starts over 520
metres at Wentworth Park.
Shifty Sticka was lightly raced, due to injury, with his
23 starts producing 12 wins and nine placings.
He was a finalist in the 2013 Group 1 Melbourne
and quickly became a favourite in Melbourne with his
brilliant wins over 515 metres at Sandown (29.49,
29.53, 29.65) and 525 metres at The Meadows (29.85,
29.98).
Three pups in Windy* litter UNFORTUNATELY just three pups in our final litter
for review, registered by Firefly breeder Leonard
Absalom, by Windy Millar* (August 2006 Honcho
Classic x Any Time Soon).
The two dogs and one bitch in the litter, are from the
very well bred bitch, Hipster Keenie (February 2011
Mogambo x Surf Attack), whose dam is by Surf Lorian
x Heart Spark (Dagenham x Flaming Fool).
She is from her dam’s only litter, of four named,
which included Blackie’s Best, Hotshot Blaster and
Wave Rider.
On the track she raced 66 times for eight wins and
twelve placings, winning three times over 480 metres at
Grafton (27.49), where she also won twice over 407
metres (23.03) and once over 305 metres (17.65), with
single wins over 392 metres at Taree (22.38) and 400
metres at The Gardens (22.81).
South Australian Whelping Report ONLY one litter on the South Australian Whelping
Report for the month of August.
The litter has nine pups, registered by Victor
Harbor breeder, Joan Schadow, by 2010 Melbourne Cup
winner, now successful sire, El Grand Senor (April
2008 Where’s Pedro x Elgrando Gold), sire of last
week’s Melbourne Cup winner, Ando’s Mac (June 2014
x Brook’s Doll).
The six dogs and three bitches in Joan’s litter are
from the well bred bitch, Victa Victoria (August 2010
Surf Lorian x Teelah), whose dam is by Primo Uno x
Corrumbene Lass (Prince Of Tigers x Moonambel Liz).
She is from a litter which included Victa Dora,
Victa Explorer and Victa Sam, with their dam also
having winners on file from her litter of eight named,
two litters by Where’s Pedro, whelped in July 2009 and
April 2011, so the bloodline of this litter is already
proven.
Victa Victoria was a model of
consistency, racing 134 times, for 26
wins and 39 placings.
She had very good form at
Angle Park, where she won five
times over 515 metres (30.09), eight
times over 600 metres (35.11) and
twice over 731 metres.
She also won six times over
531 metres at Gawler (30.66), where
she won three times over 643 metres
(37.68) and also won twice over 536
metres at Strathalbyn (31.06).
Nice litter Joan, good luck with
it.

Ando’s Mac causes upset in World’s Richest
Greyhound race Michael Floyd
Ando’s Mac caused a major upset in claiming the TAB
Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park last Thursday night.
Trained by Jason Mackay, Ando’s Mac became
the first New South Wales trained greyhound since the
year 2000 to win the world’s richest greyhound race.
“Just to make this final is something else,” said
Mackay following his TAB Melbourne Cup triumph.
“Look at the crowd, the atmosphere is just
sensational. I keep pinching myself – I know it
happened – but did it really happen? I still can’t believe
it.”
Ando’s Mac ($12.90) began fairly but was
afforded early room which allowed him to accelerate
quickly and lead through the first turn. He opened a
two-length margin over Barton Bale down the back
straight before withstanding a late charge by the well
supported Jesaulenko ($5.10) to claim the cup by ¼ of
a length in 29.48. South Australian champion Worm
Burner ($8.70) flashed home for third a further ½
length behind.
Despite drawing box 5, Mackay was quietly
confident his first TAB Melbourne Cup finalist was a
winning chance in the sport’s showcase event.
“I had a real gut feeling with this dog. He was so
terrible out of the boxes on Melbourne Cup Prelude
night when he was last away. He was a little bit better
on Melbourne Cup heats night – he came out second
last. But I just had an inkling that if he got the start
right like he has done back home, then he can run some
serious first sections and he showed that tonight. I
know there wasn’t a big margin but any margin is all
you want.”
Mackay is no stranger to group 1 success, having
trained several winners at the highest level of the sport
over his extensive training career. However to win a
TAB Melbourne Cup was the fulfillment of a live long
dream.
“All trainers aspire to win this race, it’s the
greatest race on the calendar. I don’t think deep down
that you ever think you can do it. I’ve had some really
good dogs over the years – greyhounds of the year and
track record holders – and they’ve not stacked up
because the competition is way superior here than to
anywhere else.
“But Ando’s Mac is a wonderful dog. He doesn’t
give 80 or 90 percent, he’ll bust 100 percent every
time. He’s not the fastest dog around but you wouldn’t
swap him for anything, he’s full of heart.”
The win was Ando Mac’s 16th from 29 starts –
and his second at group 1 level – with the $420,000
first prize elevating his career prize money beyond
$555,000.
During his entertaining acceptance speech,
Mackay was full of praise for fellow trainer Anthony
Azzopardi (trainer of the beaten favourite Zambora
Brockie) for looking after Ando’s Mac during his
Victorian
campaign,
as well as
the huge
crowd that

for the
Cup.
A happy Team after the win. (All Pics Clint

It’s A Bird Flies Away with Group 1 Bold
Trease Katherine Ernst
IT’S A Bird ($8.70) has scored her maiden group 1
triumph, taking out the Bold Trease (715m) last Friday
night at Sandown Park for trainer Wayne Vassallo.
Starting from box one, the daughter of Hondo Black
and It’s A Blur was able to push through to take the
lead soon after box rise and from that point onwards
was never behind another runner, defeating the strong
finishing Jaimandy Hatty ($5.60) (box six) by three and
one quarter lengths on the line.
Ramifications ($3.40) ran an honest race to finish
third, but all honours were with the winner which
clocked a slick 41.89 over the gruelling half-mile trip.
“She drew well, we had a bit of luck last week in the
heat and got through and the two gave her a bit of
room, pushed up, led and she was just too strong,” said
an elated Wayne Vassallo after the race.
“Probably half way down the back I thought she
is just going to keep kicking.
“She just kept battling away and they just couldn’t get
to her.”
The fawn stayer (pictured with trainer Wayne
Vassallo’s partner Karen Pitt and their son Toby) has
now won 17 of her 46 career starts, including her last
three in a row, while Friday’s winner’s cheque took her
career earnings to a sizeable $133,864.
The Bold Trease was just one of the highlights of
a stellar card of greyhound racing headlined by the
world's richest greyhound race, the TAB Melbourne
Cup.
It’s A Bird is a Fawn bitch whelped June 2013 by
Hondo Black from It’s A Blur (Bombastic Shiraz x
Weetbix). She is raced by the Whittington Syndicate
and trained by Wayne Vassallo at Devon Meadows in
Victoria. She has now won 17 races and been placed 13
times from her 46 starts. The Bold Trease first prize of
$100,000 brings her overall prizemoney to $158,864
After the placings the field finished in the following
order, 4th It’s A Fling ($4.10) 5th Caco Potion
($24.00), 6th Kuta’s Lad ($7.60) 7th Avatar Jet
($25.70) and Springvale Bryne ($7.10).

Completing a big night of racing, Group 2 Geelong
Cup winner Shima Song from box three took out the
Listed Cup Night Sprint in a fast 29.24 for Andrea
Dailly, while Dundee Osprey claimed the Listed
Middle Distance for Geoff Scott-Smith in another fast
run of 33.88.
TAB Melbourne Cup night was another
tremendous success for the club, with a large crowd in
attendance witnessing a memorable night of greyhound
racing. A bold move by the club to shift the Cup from
the traditional Thursday night to a Friday in 2014 and
continued to the entire three-week carnival last year
and this year it has proved the bonus it promised. The
big crowd helped the Club continue to top records for T
AB turnover at greyhound meetings. The large
crowd was a fitting reward for the hard-working
administration, catering, and track staff at Sandown.
The Sandown team led by CEO Greg Miller
introduced several changes to how Cup night is run and
promoted over the last few years and the results have
been stunning. The big crowd enjoyed a wonderful
night of excitement and atmosphere plus a host of
entertainment and action. They got what was promised
to be entertained.

Last Race At Tweed Heads Confirmed
The Board of the Tweed Heads Coursing Club has
confirmed to Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) that
the last race at Tweed Heads ('Border Park') greyhound
track will take place on Saturday, December 3.
The confirmation of the last meeting comes after the
club sold the land and racetrack at Border Park.
The club has advised GRNSW that it would like to
ensure funds of the sale of the land remain invested in
NSW greyhound racing, by potentially relocating the
club to an alternative location in the Northern Rivers
region.
GRNSW plans to meet with the club’s board next week
to discuss the relocation proposal further as well to
discuss avenues to maintain Non-tab racing in the
Northern Rivers region for the first half of 2017.
GRNSW will provide more information to stakeholders
when it becomes available.

This week’s nostalgia takes us
back to a 78 page booklet I
produced in 1996, to mark 21
years of the Victorian
Metropolitan Sires List.
Those lists were the only data
available on sires and brood
bitches at that time and were
published monthly in Greyhound
Weekly, and the then GRCB
magazine, The Adviser.
Not having any information on sires lists prior
to 1976, I put out a call for any readers with any
details to contact me.
The result was a call from the late Marie
Schofield, wife of the legendary greyhound identity,
George Schofield, who offered to send me some
information from her collection of old records.
George and Marie had Shan’s View and it was
through the material she sent me I was able to
establish the fact than Shan’s View was leading
Victorian metropolitan sire for the four year period
from 1963-66.
Marie believed that it was in 1964 that he
topped the list with 220 wins, a record only equaled
by the great Temlee in 1979, and of course it should
be remembered, Temlee had a lot more pups running
around when he equaled the record, than Shan’s View
did in his time.
Unfortunately Marie had no other information
from that year.
Marie’s figures for 1972 were the same as 1971,
so we were left with no sires list for 1971, and were
unable to find any record of 1974 either.
It is feared this information has been lost for all
time.
Former South Australian, Colin Lyons, who was
living in Harcourt at the time, provided a newspaper
clipping that gave us the 1973.
Throughout the booklet, under the sections
devoted to the Victorian Metropolitan Sires List, we
had the pedigree of each leading sire from 1965 to
1996.
Pedigrees are so easy to access this year, via the
internet, but in those days it was the trusty ANZGA
Stud Book that was the breeder’s bible.
The booklet also featured the main winners for
each top metropolitan sire over the 21 years.
We will be running these lists regularly over the
next few months, as we look back over 40 years of the
history of the Victorian breeding industry.
