3. CRITERION III: RESEARCH, CONSULTANCY AND EXTENSION
3.1.Promotion of Research
3.1.1. Does the College have a research committee to monitor and address the
issues of research? If yes, what is its composition? Mention a few
recommendations which have been implemented and their impact.
The college has recently formed a Research Committee to promote and monitor
research activities within the college.
The Research Committee is headed by Professor Goutam Bhattacharya, Head of
the Department of Physics who has vast research experience to his credit. There
are 7 members representing various departments of the college. 5 External
Experts have been included in the Committee to guide and advise research
activities.
o One of the major recommendations made by the committee is to establish
Swami Vivekananda Research Centre with effect from July 2013. This
Research Centre will be the nodal body for all research activities which
various departments will undertake in the future.
o The committee recommended the college administration to allocate ‘seed
money’ for research activities within the college. The college has
responded positively to this recommendation and has initially allocated
Rupees 1 Lac for the purpose.
3.1.2. What is the policy of the College to promote research culture in the
College?
The college offers all possible encouragement and infrastructural support to
research activities.
The college has decided to reduce the work load of faculty members who are
supervising PhD scholars.
Since the college is run by the Ramakrishna Mission which has branches all
over the country, it liaises with these centers for purposes of field work.
3.1.3. List details of prioritised research areas and the areas of expertise
available with the College.
Some of the areas the Research Committee of the college has prioritized are:
o Culture
o History
o Language and Literature
o Philosophy
o Religion
o Development studies
o Pure Sciences
In a research environment where interdisciplinary approaches dominate
the above mentioned areas are likely to overlap.
Some of the areas in which the college already has expertize are:
o Paninian Grammar and Nyaya Philosophy
o Local Administration
o Macro-Economic Studies
o Translation Studies
o Folk culture
o Indian Literary Theories
o Gaudiya Vaishnavism
3.1.4. What are the proactive mechanisms adopted by the College to facilitate
smooth implementation of research schemes/projects?
advancing funds for sanctioned projects
Once a research project is sanctioned by the concerned authority (e.g.
UGC), the college provides the requisite amount to the researcher.
providing seed money
On the recommendation of the Research Committee the college has
made an initial allocation of Rupees 1 Lac as ‘Seed Money’.
autonomy to the principal investigator/coordinator for utilizing overhead
charges
The Principal Investigator/Coordinator has complete autonomy in the
utilization of overhead charges
timely release of grants
There has never been any delay on the part of the college in the release
of grants.
timely auditing
The college always adheres to time bound auditing of all sanctioned
projects.
Submission of utilization certificate to the funding authorities.
The college submits utilization certificate to the funding authorities
within the prescribed time frame.
3.1.5. How is interdisciplinary research promoted?
between/among different departments of the College
o The college encourages interdisciplinary research activities in keeping
with recent trends. In a Minor Research Project the Principal investigator
Prof. Sandipan Sen of the Political Science Department had collaborated
with Swami Shastrajnananda of the Bengali Department (presently
Principal) and Prof. Nachiketa Chattopadhyay of the Department of
Economics and Statistics.
collaboration with national/international institutes / industries.
o The college is open to collaborative projects with both
national/international institutes/industries. The college granted permission
to Dr. Indrashis Banerjee of the Department of Political Science to act as
a consultant for a major Research Project at The Burdwan University.
3.1.6. Enumerate the efforts of the College in attracting researchers of eminence
to visit the campus and interact with teachers and students.
The college plays a proactive role in attracting researchers of eminence to
interact with teachers and students. Some of the efforts include:
o Organizing National and International level Seminars/Workshops at
regular intervals with eminent scholars and researchers as resource
persons.
o Inviting scholars of repute as ‘Resident Scholars’ from time to time.
o Organizing extension lectures by eminent scholars on a regular basis
at the Departmental level.
o Organizing weekly seminars with speakers from various walks of life.
o Inviting distinguished scholars as ‘Nalinikanta Brahma Chair
Professor’ for one year.
3.1.7. What percentage of faculty have utilized sabbatical leave for research
activities? How has the provision contributed to the research quality and
culture of the College?
Approximately 10%
3.1.8. Provide details of national and international conferences organized by the
College highlighting the names of eminent scientists/scholars who participated
in these events.
Following is the year-wise list of the seminars and conferences oraginsed by
