The Executive Branch

The President and the Vice President are a

part of the Executive Branch.

The President’s Cabinet is also a part of this

branch.

The Executive Branch controls the military.

This branch also accepts or vetoes laws.

The Executive Branch enforces the laws and

makes foreign policy.

This branch writes the federal budget.

The Judicial Branch

The Supreme Court is a part of the Judicial

Branch (members serve there for life, or until

retirement).

The Judicial Branch determines if laws are

constitutional or not.

This branch decides court cases and settles

cases between two or more states.

Also, the Judicial Branch interprets laws.

The Legislative Branch

The Congress makes up this branch. The

Congress consists of the Senate (100

members) and the House of

Representatives (435 members).

The Legislative Branch can over ride a veto

and declare war.

This branch can impeach the President and

approve or reject the Presidents

appointment.

Also, the Legislative Branch has the power

of the purse!

(Senate and House of

Representatives)

Senate

The Senate has 100 people.

The leader is the Vice President.

When the Senate talks about a bill, they don’t have a strict set of rules for debating or amending.

The Senate is in charge of approving many of the decisions of the president.

Senators serve for 6 year terms.

The senators must be at least 30 years old and have been a citizen of the U.S. for at least 9 years.

House of Representatives

The House of Representative has 435 members.

The leader is the Speaker of the House

When the House of Representative talks about a law, they have a strict set of rules for debating.

In a presidential election, where a candidate doesn’t have a majority of votes , the House chooses the next president.

To be a representative here, you must be 25 years old and must have been a U.S. citizen for at least 7 years.

Representatives serve for 2 year long terms.

Why do We Have the Three

Branches of Government?

We have the three branches of

government to make sure that there isn’t only

one person in charge. Also, it makes sure that

everyone has their own responsibilities. The

branches make sure that everyone has their

own amount of power. These branches of

government allow everyone to have their own

say in the national government.
