lAM POEMPoetry deals with the emotions, just as music. An autobiographical poem is personal-itreveals something about the person writing the poem. It does not have to rhyme. Below is

. a simple plan to write your own autobiographical poem. Just follow the steps and-before you know it-it's done.

IAMPoem

FIRST STANZAI am and (two special characteristics you have)I wonder _(something you are actually curious about)I hear (an imaginary sound)I see (an imaginary sight)I want (an actual desire)I am and (the first line ofthe poem repeated)-------- ----------

Example (Lined up Left)lAM

I am a crazy guy who likes The Raiders.I wonder what I, and the world, will be like in the year 2030.I hear silence pulsing in the middle of the night.I see a football flying Up to the sky.I want the adventure of life before it passes me by.I am a crazy guy who likes The Raiders.

I pretend that I'm the ruler of the world.I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders.I touch others hearts by making them laugh.I worry about war.I cry for all the death and poverty in the worldI am a crazy guy who likes The Raiders

I understand the frustration of not being able to do something easily.I say that we are all equal.I dream of traveling to other points on the earth.I try to reach out to poor and starving children.I hope the Raiders will win a super-bowl.I am a crazy guy who likes The Raiders.--SAMUEL MAAS

#2 Example (Centered)I am a hard working teacher who loves to laugh

I wonder how my students will do this yearI hear their brains clickingI see the light in their eyes

I want them to want to succeedI am a hard working teacher who loves to laugh

I pretend I am always in controlI feel like I'm swimming in quicksand sometimes

I touch the hearts and minds of othersI worry that I am not good enough

I cry when one of my family is in painI am a hard working teacher who loves to laugh

I understand I cannot save everyone ignorance and apathyI say I still need to try

I dream of being the best teacher I can beI try to make my classes interesting

I hope I never stop caringI am a hard working teacher who loves to laugh

ACROSTIC POEM

To make an acrostic poem, write a word vertically (the spine) and.then useeach letter to begin a line.

Ex:M ade in the shadeIn the summer sun·K ids sell lemonadeEveryone has fun!

The acrostic is Rexible and can be used in different ways. Liuebreaks canoccur within phrases to create a verse about the subject spelled in the verticalletters.

Ex: Creature whoA pproaches you when it wantsTo

This example emphasizes the unexpectedness and the independence of afeline's movements, more than if the poem were only one line.

More ideas for using an acrostic style:Use a series of words for the spine.Write repeated acrostics of the same word.Spell the spine word from the bottom to the top.

Tonight I canH ear andEven

Ex: PandoraOpenedEverythingToR eaJizeYes! But .•.

PlayingOn the swingEatingTaffyR unning through theYard.

S cnsc the powerExpressed inA wave.

=Brenda Keene, lOth

The poem can relate to the spine word as above, or not:

Run011 theSofa even thoughEveryone tells you not to.S omerimcs J do.
