Park Wildflower Update: 4/8/19
1. Visitor Center area: Nice patches of desert dandelion, phacelia, shrubs, and cacti in Visitor Center
garden; along paved trail to campground; west of our parking lot; and in Hellhole Canyon.
2. Borrego Palm Canyon : Alternate Trail (starts a short way up the paved path to the campfire center)
and Main Trail both have flowers. Notice the Indigo Bush, new this week.
3. Coyote Canyon : At the end of the pavement, DiGiorgio Rd, walk east on the dirt road for sunflowers.
The dirt road into Lower Coyote Canyon is good to Desert Gardens, where ocotillos are blooming. Only
high clearance 4WD vehicles should venture beyond this point; road is rough.
4. Henderson Canyon Road: Sunflowers are still blooming here, surrounded by grass. On the west end,
look among the metal sculptures.
5. Highway 78 Corridor: Narrows Earth Trail, Mine Wash (2WD vehicles just as far as the vault toilet)
and Plum Canyon (2WD vehicles should stay right at fork) all have poppies, shrubs, and other flowers.
6. Tamarisk Grove: Cactus Loop and Yaqui Well Trails (across S-3 from Tamarisk Grove) have poppies,
cacti, and “belly flowers.” Explore also (on foot) the wash behind Tamarisk Grove campground.
7. Blair Valley: Enter near mile marker 23 on Highway S-2 for large primitive camping area, good
flowers, and short hikes to the Morteros and to the Marshal South Homesite. Vault toilet. Only 4WD
vehicles should attempt to go beyond Morteros trailhead to the Pictographs trailhead. Continue on S-2
for roadside cacti, phacelia, agave, yucca all the way to Vallecito County Park.
