It is easy to be upbeat when on or around the water. It can be contagious, so our passengers and crew often share that feeling and the journey becomes even more fun. During the winter season with boats on the tarmac, skippers experience dark and gloomy days and tire of looking at marine catalogs and boating magazines. Their attitudes soon turn pessimistic. So if you are trending toward pessimism, take advantage of it and think about some of the worst-case scenarios when you are on the water. Then think of a plan to deal with them and you might feel more upbeat. The Boy Scout approach is “Be Prepared.” This means thinking about any accident or situation that might occur, so you know the right thing to do and are willing to do it. Thinking about possible emergencies along with sound solutions can help to develop safe and responsible skippers. Here is a short “What if?” list to work on. In the February/March issue of Waukeelog we will discuss how to be prepared for these events. If any WSPS members want to share their ideas on preparing for any of these events, please send a note to [email protected] and put Be Prepared in the subject line. They will be included in the discussion.

1. You need a tow for some reason. What kind of lines and how many should be aboard your vessel to set up a tow rig and where would you attach any towing lines?

2. If you were towed into you harbor, where would you initially tie up you boat?

3. How would you slow your sail or power boat when coming to your slip with the engine or engines out? This is a tough one.

4. If you had a major water leak while underway, what minimum equipment should you have on board to help keep your vessel afloat?

5. If you had a major water leak, do you know where all the thru hull fittings are on your boat and how to close or plug them?

6. If you had a Mayday situation while underway, what would you do? Remember Mayday distress calls are reserved for situations involving risk of life or grave and immediate danger, or both. A passenger with a broken leg would not likely qualify while cruising in Lake Michigan.

7. In an emergency while underway how would you give your location quickly and accurately?

8. If the USCG, or any other legitimate authority wanted to board your vessel, what would you do?

9. If you have a diesel engine, how would you bleed air from the fuel system if it became necessary?

10. What would you do if you saw a sailboat underway with sails up and displaying near the front of the vessel an inverted conical shape pointing down?

Being prepared for the ultimate offshore incident-a sinking ship-was what saved 14 crew members of the HMS Bounty which sank about 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, NC last October. Two large survival rafts were on board, as well as all the electronics needed to communicate its problems and locate its position. Of course, the decision to leave port from New London, CT with Hurricane Sandy approaching was a judgment call which has been debated a lot within the mariner community. The captain and one crew were washed overboard during the sinking and perished. Being prepared doesn’t guarantee safety to all aboard, but helps. A USCG hearing on the Bounty’s sinking is scheduled to start on February 12 in Portsmouth, VA. The hearing will probably focus on the decision to leave port with Sandy in the mix.

Email Ellen Ludtke [email protected] if you are among the missing on this list!

As part of our Squadron’s commitment to safe boating we will be having our annual flare shoot at Waukegan Harbor on Saturday, May 18, 2013 to kick of National Safe Boating Week. In addition to the chance to shoot off your old expired flares, many other distress signals will be demonstrated. If any of our members have ideas about other safety demonstrations they would like to see or present at this event please send me a note at [email protected] and put Flare Shoot in the subject line. We would like to fill the entire morning with safety demonstrations to help boaters “Be Prepared.”

The General Slocum, paddle wheel steamer built in 1891, caught fire and sunk in the East River, New York City on June 15, 1904 with over

1000 passengers either drowned or killed in the fire. Account written by Edward F Kunath, June 1904

With the recent ferry accident in NYC I thought you might find this interesting. To the right is part of a letter written by my grandfather to his father, about his sister’s story of survival in the General Slocum tour boat fire and sinking in 1904. The boat was chartered for a Sunday school picnic cruise departing from New York with 1400 passengers, mostly women and children. A fire started in the “Lamp room”, fueled by oily rags and straw stored in the room. Despite a recent inspection (there was suspicion that the inspection record was falsified) fire hoses burst from dry rot, life preservers which had been stored in the open for 13 years fell apart. Mothers put the defective PFD’s on their children and threw them into the water only to watch in horror as their children sunk and drowned. Lifeboats were found to be painted or wired in place and could not be launched. Few people in 1904 knew how to swim, and those who did jump into the water were weighed down by the heavy clothing of the times. Many of those who stayed aboard died in the smoke and flames. All told, over 1000 of the pas-sengers and crew died that day, making the wreck of the General Slocum the worst disaster in New York City history until the World Trade Center 9/11 attack. There were investigations into the boat company, life preserver manufacturer and the ship’s Captain; the only one convicted was Captain Van Schaick who served 3+ years in Sing-Sing prison for criminal negligence in connection with the lack of maintenance. I wonder what they will find out in the in- vestigation of the recent ferry accident. Have we learned anything since the General Slocum? This is my last issue as Editor of the Waukeelog. Since we are winter residents of Venice, Florida we’ve decided to move our regular membership to that squadron. It’s been a pleasure writing this column over the years, I hope Kathy Le Vine, the new editor doesn’t mind if I submit a contribution from time to time. BobBobBobBob
