CPA CONGRESS 2014 – LEADERSHIP. STRATEGY. BUSINESS.

“Best conference we have ever attended, interesting topics, bold speakers, that’s how a conference should be,” were some of the immediate feedback received at the close of CPA Congress 2014. With the theme ‘Leadership. Strategy. Business’, the tightly packed congress with 22 speakers across 3 plenary sessions, 2 business forums, a GST master class and a special session on Feng Shui, was certainly the right platform for stimulating conversations and provoking debates. Over 250 delegates attended the congress on 9 September at The Gardens Hotel & Residences in Kuala Lumpur.

Plenary 1 “The Evolving Media Landscape – Broadening The Outreach and Making an Impact” had Umapagan Ampikaipakan, BFM 89.9’s effervescent presenter moderating the session with heavy weight panellists Dato’ Amrin Awaluddin, Group Managing Director of Media Prima Berhad; Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of The Star Media Group; and Premesh Chandran, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysiakini.com.

The panel discussed the tremendous changes in the media landscape and how businesses could make the most of new opportunities, as well as explore the next generation of shapers and influencers in media. Dato’ Amrin and Datuk Seri Wong provided their input on the current evolution of print media, while Premesh drove home the importance of businesses having an online presence.

Ho Kay Tat, Group Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of The Edge Media Group moderated the second plenary which featured Ashok Ramamurthy, Group Managing Director of AmBank Group; Associate Professor Brian Low, Head of Discipline – Marketing in Monash University Malaysia; and Datuk I.G Chandran, Director – Forensic Division of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

News Asia moderated the session in his trademark laidback style. The humorous banter between Afzal and Karamjit was clearly infectious as Sharan joined in and injected sharp wit into the discussions. The final plenary session shone the spotlight on women in the driver’s seat. Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, Chairman of AirAsia X and a former Federal Minister did not disappoint as she, along with fellow panellists YB Nancy Shukri, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and Cheryl Yeoh, Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC), had an adrenalin-filled session that questioned the need to have quotas for women on boards

when women have proven time and time again that they have the ability to lead without the need for special concession. Meera Sivasothy, BFM89.9 presenter and producer, moderated the session.

Congress closed with Dato’ Joey Yap’s sharp take on Chinese metaphysics being a contrast to the earlier sessions. CPA AUSTRALIA GUIDES REPURPOSED FOR MALAYSIAN CONSUMPTION

CPA Australia’s Guide to Understanding Annual Reports: Listed companies and Guide to Understanding Auditing and Assurance: Listed companies have been repurposed for Malaysian listed companies with the contribution and collaborative input of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA).

The guides, which are available free online, are intended to help existing as well as prospective investors and users of financial statement make better informed investment decisions.

The guides will help less experienced investors to build the financial literacy skills they need to become more active and engaged shareholders. With the right guidance and a little bit of knowledge, they can be quick and easy to demystify and reveal a heap of information not readily interpreted at first glance.

The Guide to Understanding Annual Reports: Listed companies, provides an explanatory overview of annual reports, financial statements, analytical tools as well as a glossary of financial terminology. This is particularly relevant during company reporting season when investors are reviewing their investment and making decisions based on their ability to read what’s behind the numbers.

From left to right - Amir Ghandar, Nik Mohd Hasyudeen, Wong Kay Yong, Chong Chee Fern and Sukanta Dutt

The Guide to Understanding Auditing and Assurance: Listed companies, is an important financial literacy initiative, providing much-needed clarification around audits. It is a simple, plain language guide for shareholders who are not experts in auditing and assurance to better understand information they receive from auditors about their companies.

In particular, the key benefits for shareholders from reading The Guide to Understanding Auditing and Assurance include an overview of what auditing and assurance mean; the difference between an audit and a review; how to tell if an auditor’s report is “clean” or contains a qualification; explanation of an auditor’s role in respect to fraud and growing concern’ and illustrative sample audit and review reports with plain language explanation.

In conjunction with the launching of the Guides, a panel session was held on 30 September to discuss stakeholders expectation of audit’. CPA Australia’s Policy Adviser for Audit Assurance - External Positioning, Amir Ghandar, who was heavily involved in the production of the Guide to Understanding Auditing and Assurance, moderated the session that included panellists Chong Chee Fern, General Manager

(Corporate Monitoring) of the Minority Shareholder Watchdog Group, Sukanta Dutt, Managing Partner of Global Risk Management Infrastructure, EY Malaysia, and Wong Kay Yong, Executive President or Corporate Surveillance and Governance, Bursa Malaysia.

The panel focused on the gap between stakeholder expectation and what an audit actually entails, an issue that has plagued capital markets for years. Often bubbling into prominence when something goes wrong, for instance, a corporate fraud or collapse, the core of this expectation remains.
