The path from the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in 2012 to the recent passage of the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Climate Change Agreement has seen strong levels of commitment by world leaders to shift to a green economy. The World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) emerged, in response to the priorities and concerns identified during this path, as an organization intended to support emerging global actions towards the green, low-carbon and climate-resilient development model.

WGEO seeks to promote the widespread acceptance and increased importance of a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, by linking financing, technology, capacity-building and all other elements of the enabling environment for a green economy. WGEO is being established by a treaty (the “Agreement establishing the World Green Economy Organization”) with an innovative organizational and institutional structure and innovative operational procedures. It is a multi-stakeholder Institution which also provides the private sector and other stakeholders with a voice in decision-making.

The aim of the “2nd Preparatory Conference on the Establishment of the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO)” is to facilitate consensus of potential members on the wording of the “Agreement establishing the World Green Economy Organization” (WGEO Agreement), to allow finalization and signature of the WGEO Agreement at the Founding Conference in 2019. In addition, the Conference will seek to facilitate progress towards adoption of an actionable framework allowing WGEO to engage effectively with private sector platform members in the pursuit of its objectives.

The Conference will provide an overview of WGEO’s core functions and innovative features as a multi-stakeholder institution that gives a voice to stakeholders in decision making and relies on funding and implementation of operational activities on non-state members.

Facilitate dialogue and knowledge exchange within a collaborative community of multisectoral leaders from business and governments to leverage the strengths of multiple sectors and disciplines to yield benefits of transitioning to green economy.

Showcase potential bankable projects for private-sector engagement through WGEO’s Private Sector Platform.

Facilitate consensus on the wording and the finalization of the WGEO Agreement.

Mark the first gathering of WGEO Private Sector Platform members, to discuss opportunities and overcome barriers in the formation of public–private partnerships, to meet country-level sustainable development priorities.

Explore a range of green transformative topics to accelerate the transition to a new model of growth, act on the urgency of climate change and meet global development challenges.

Allow potential members to consider the adoption of the draft declaration.
