1) Introduction

Brazilian Music Foundation (BMF), in partnership with Asuos Productions, will present the 2nd Annual International Choro Festival, with a variety of interesting presentations, workshops, lectures, movies and concert performances. The Festival collaborators aim to involve different cultures and exchange artistic experiences between Brazil and the US. The festival was first presented in August 2015, and it was a great success with over 500 participants. Due to this positive reception, we will continue with an annual presentation. The event will provide the opportunity for everyone to learn about one of the oldest Brazilian musical styles, the Choro.

On October 1st & 2nd, 2016, those who appreciate the genuine sound of Brazilian instrumental music will have the opportunity to enjoy the Second International Choro Festival in the City of New York. The Festival aims to promote and preserve the “Choro” – the oldest Brazilian musical style and part of Brazil's rich instrumental music tradition since the nineteenth century in all regions of the country. The festival brings together local and Brazilian musicians presenting traditional Choro and new compositions.

October 1st is “International Music Day”, created by UNESCO in 1975.

UNESCO is an organization that encourages global peace and unity, as does the

Brazilian Music Foundation. The goal of International Music Day is to create a

global atmosphere of music; a platform for diverse people to come together and

mingle to create one unified whole.

2) Who we are: Brazilian native, Madalena Sousa, a business administrator and entrepreneur, founded the New York based Brazilian Music Foundation in May 2013 after realizing the real need to promote and educate people about Brazilian Music in the US. BMF produces an extraordinary range of musical educational programs through the School of Music (BMFSOM). The school was created under the umbrella of the BMF. The BMFSOM engages, in national and international musical exchange by creating programs and opportunities for those who want to learn Brazilian Music and develop their skills. The programs are presently being offered to schools, colleges and universities throughout the year.

The Foundation promotes, develops and educates the public about the Brazilian music BMF also produces cultural events to unify and support Brazilian musicians living in New York City.

The Future of Our Children Project Changing lives through Music

BMF supports programs that use music to enable every child to feel like an asset within his or her community. Playing a musical instrument has many benefits: it can bring joy to you and everyone around you. We know how music education can change and enhance lives by helping street children in Brazil and other countries.

BMF is a socially committed program, dedicated to helping children move off the streets, helping them to become socially responsible, and giving them the opportunity for a better life through music.

3) Project Title:

2nd International Choro Festival - 2016

In Celebration of the “International Music Day” – October 1st

4) Objective: The purpose of the Festival is to promote Choro and Brazilian music in the US,

starting in the city of NY. This musical style was created in Rio de Janeiro. In 2016,

Rio will host the Olympic Games, so we believe that this is a great opportunity for the

American community to learn more about the Carioca Culture. Along with live

concerts, BMF will show video documentaries with images from the city and the

history of Choro music.

Intent: Cultural exchange, break boundaries and bring awareness of how music can change children’s lives.

5) About the Festival:

The weekend festival, October 1st & 2nd, will feature the Brazilian music style

“Choro”. The program is filled with a variety of interesting presentations, workshops,

lectures, movies and concerts.

The Second Annual “International Choro Festival” in NYC aims to preserve and share the Choro music style, considered one of the oldest forms of rich instrumental music in Brazil. These days, Choro is enjoying a renaissance not only in Brazil but around the world, and the wave of enthusiasm has definitely reached New York City!

There are over 30 different types of rhythms in Brazilian Music. By presenting the diversity of our rhythms, we hope to encourage diverse musicians, music students, adults, and children to engage in creating music with a dynamic communicative style that is energetic, fun, creative, and very inspiring!

6) History of Choro:

Choro music is roots jazz from Brazil, and considered Brazil’s first “urban pop” music. In this unique show the audience will experience a wide range of pieces by many of our most important contemporary composers, including Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Paulinho da Viola, Orlando Silveira, and many others. The word choro in Portuguese literally means "to cry," which seems like an ironic name for music that is often so joyous and celebratory. Actually the term refers to the lilting or "weeping" qualities of the solo instrument, usually a flute or clarinet (Think of the way Benny Goodman could "wail"). About “Roda de Choro”: One of the characteristics of the traditional choro performance is that the participating musicians usually are seated in a circle, or around a table facing each other, creating an intimate atmosphere with the opportunity to watch each other while playing (see photo). This was from the start the ideal setting for a roda de choro (which literally means a circle of people performing choro music), and this practice is continued to this day in small clubs, bar rooms and private gatherings. You could say that the a roda de choro is well suited for chamber and other music that demands concentration, great technical skills and the presence of a common feeling, which is the spirit of choro.
