PROJECT SUMMARYFrom January 7 - 21, the 2019 Global Leaders Program Cohort travels to Chile to participate in a Full Cohort Residence curated by Harvard University’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies (DRCLAS). The project is organized in partnership with a variety of leading arts, development, and education organizations across Chile, including Colegio Kopernikus, Teatro del Lago, Corporación de Adelanto de Panguipulli, Universidad Austral de Chile, Cuerdas Frotadas Osorno, Musicaustral, Centro Cultural San Antonio, Centro de Desarrollo Social Orquesta de Niños del Altiplano, and Fundación Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI). Additional support is provided by Fundación PLADES as well as the collaboration of local initiatives including Departamento de Cultura Municipal, Área de Comunidad Teatro del Lago, Museo Colonial Alemán de Frutillar, Casa de Oficios, Aprendizaje Creativo Frutillar, Cámara de Turismo y Cultura AG, Botes Puerto Octay, and Amabilidad. Through development-focused learning activities in a variety of locations, the 2019 GLP Cohort takes measurable steps towards promoting the sustainable growth of initiatives in the region, while broadening their insights and capabilities as rising social innovators through music.

PART I: MODULEThe project begins with a five-day intensive Module in the Chilean community of Frutillar, recently named a UNESCO City of Music. The Program supports the Fundación PLADES network of local initiatives aimed at social innovation, to promote creative learning opportunities and increased community impact.

Through a series of activities on the ground lasting from January 7 - 12, led by Harvard’s DRCLAS, 40 Cohort Members of the 2019 Global Leaders Program—expert, motivated change-makers in community development through the arts and rising social entrepreneurs representing 24 nations across five continents—lead and collaborate in a series of activities aimed at furthering the sustainable development of the town and the surrounding region. GLP Cohort Members and visiting Faculty bring transferable perspectives on ways to better connect practical problem-solving tools from the arts and humanities to the civic development of community. everything from education to medicine, from science to law, from politics to business. Additionally, Cohort Members spend three days working hand-in-hand with local NGOs to explore institutional processes within these organizations. These sessions look to better understand the challenges these NGOs are working to address and how to refine processes harnessed toward solving these challenges. All GLP-led activities unfold in Frutillar, under the guidance of Harvard Faculty Dr. Doris Sommer, Director of the Cultural Agents Initiative, together with Fundación Batuta’s Academic Director Catherine Surace, and additional visiting lecturers.

INNOVATION PROCESS WORKSHOPS WITH FUNDACIÓN PLADES NGOs

From January 8 - 11, Cohort Members break into small teams to lead hands-on workshops and conversations with local NGOs. Calling upon critical learnings from The Global Leaders Program curriculum and the shared experience brought together by international perspectives of Cohort Members, small teams work with local NGOs to help co-engineer innovative solutions for local challenges. These processes and conversations aim to produce a holistic and integrated understanding of each local initiative’s mission, objectives, design, and culture, as well as their services, products, and programs.

On the evening of January 11, all PLADES-supported initiatives come together for a forum where Cohort Teams present a summary of their work to the community at-large. Cohort Members share a series of observations, insights, and outcomes from each of the site workshops, moderated by José Feuereisen, Sociocultural Director of Fundación PLADES.

PART II: FIELDWORK

Following the Frutillar Module, beginning on January 13, GLP Cohort Members travel on a series of field assignments across Chile, from the Atacama Desert to the island of Chiloe. The Teams spend a week leading educational camps intended to support the development of regional music education initiatives including Vive La Música Panguipulli, XXV Campamento Musical Marqués de Mancera, Cuerdas Frotadas de Osorno, Musicaustral, Campamento Orquesta Regional de Los Lagos, Campamento Orquesta Regional de Arica y Parinacota, Orquesta Juvenil de San Antonio, and Campamento Musical del Desierto de Atacama. Cohort Members mentor 500+ youth, in addition to engaging local music teachers in instructive sectionals, rehearsals, clinics, and other activities intended to benefit community music initiatives, while exposing the Cohort to a variety of new perspectives, references, and practices.

FIELDWORK HOSTS

VIVE LA MÚSICA - PULLINQUE - PANGUIPULLITogether with local music teachers, GLP Cohort Members lead a series of pedagogical activities for 100+ students from the public school system, ages 7-16, guiding them through the rudiments of music theory, harmony, and instrumental technique, while emphasizing their musical reading abilities.

CUERDAS FROTADAS DE OSORNO - OSORNOGLP Cohort Members support the musical advancement of string students from the city of Osorno. In addition to performing a chamber music concert for the community, Cohort Members guide workshops to further the artistic level of students who are pursuing a career in music.

CAMPAMENTO MUSICAUSTRAL - FRUTILLARAs part of a distinguished faculty of international teachers, GLP Cohort Members mentor undergraduate students from various universities in Chile, to deepen their knowledge and improve their performance skills of Latin American folk and pop repertoire.

XXV CAMPAMENTO MUSICAL MARQUÉS DE MANCERA - NIEBLAAs part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the Campamento Musical Marqués de Mancera welcomes GLP Cohort Members to run an orchestral experience for young musicians from across the country. Various performances take place throughout the Los Ríos Region.

CAMPAMENTO MUSICAL DEL DESIERTO DE ATACAMA – CALAMA/ANTOFAGASTA/SAN PEDROGLP Cohort Members work with youth from the cities of Calama and Antofagasta, located in the north of Chile in the heart of the Atacama Desert, joining the organization in its mission to provide cultural advancement for these communities. This will be the first camp ot its kind in this region, which is best known for its mining industry.

CAMPAMENTO ORQUESTA SINFÓNICA JUVENIL REGIONAL DE LOS LAGOS & DE ARICA-PARINACOTA - CHONCHI & ARICAGLP Cohort Members provide orchestral training to talented high school age students from the states of Los Lagos and Arica-Parinacota as part of this camp, an initiative of Fundacion de Orquestas Juveniles e Infantiles de Chile (FOJI).

ORQUESTA JUVENIL DE SAN ANTONIO – SAN ANTONIOA program of the Cultural Center of San Antonio, GLP Cohort Members guide intensive pedagogical activities to support the musical advancement of local students, as well as sharing pedagogical tools with local coaches.

A graduate of Harvard University and the University of Chicago in Economics, Venezuelan-American philanthropist Arturo Brillembourg is Chairman of the Well-Tempered Fund, having held prominent positions previously on Wall Street.

DR. MARK CHURCHILL, el SiSTema uSaDr. Mark Churchill is Dean Emeritus of New England Conservatory’s Department of Preparatory and Continuing Education, which he led for 31 years. He holds a DMA from the University of Hartford, and received his BM and MM from New England Conservatory.

Gloria Garafulich is Director of the Gabriela Mistral Foundation. She has served in a number of other roles, including Vice President at a Management Consulting firm on Wall Street and at the Chilean Copper Company in New York.

Dr. Lisa Lorenzino serves as the Area Chair, Music Education at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. Her work has been published in Research Studies in Music Education, Canadian Music Educator, Canadian Winds, and the National Flute Association Journal.

A top businessman in the energy sector in Chile, Matias Perez Cruz is President of Empresas Gasco. His love for the arts developed early, having served as one of the leading Board Members and sponsors of Santiago’s Teatro Municipal (Opera House) for a number of years.

Dr. Doris Sommer, Director of the Cultural Agents Initiative at Harvard University, is Ira and Jewell Williams Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and of African and African American Studies at Harvard University.

OVERVIEWThe Global Leaders Program is a nine-month Executive Graduate Certificate in Community Leadership, Teaching Artistry, Cultural Agency, and Social Entrepreneurship offered annually to a select Cohort of 40 rising musical-changemakers. The Program gives participants the opportunity to grow through immersive Field Assignments to the world’s most dynamic communities, while receiving hands-on guidance from a Faculty of industry leaders - pursuing a curriculum of 12 tailored academic Modules overseen by a range of top universities and private think tanks. Participants are taught to act simultaneously as entrepreneurs, youth mentors, teaching artists, community leaders, civic advocates, dynamic performers, cultural agents, and social value creators. Graduating members are transforming the paradigm of what it means to be a great artist, and working to ensure that music initiatives continue to serve and enrich communities for generations to come.
