I n the past decade, book-ing travel has become as easy as clicking a mouse. Countless websites offer

hundreds of dollars in savings, enticing hundreds of millions of people into exotic island vaca-tions and family trips to resorts around the country.

While the number of travel agents has seemingly dwindled since the coming of internet travel booking, some travel agents say the transition has just created a better, more special-ized travel consultant.

“The time for mom-and-pop travel agencies is over,” said J.T. Fulkerson of All About Hon-eymoons in Lone Oak. “Those generic travel agencies, booking small trips and tours and excur-sions, are gone now. It’s about fi nding a niche and concentrat-ing on it.”

Fulkerson’s at-home travel agency books about 75 vaca-tions a year. Lindsey Johnson, a six-year veteran of the travel business who works from home as part of the Travel Gals of Paducah, says she books as many as 400 passengers for travel every year.

The problem facing the indus-try, Johnson said, is that people don’t understand what a travel agent does.

“People don’t under-stand that it doesn’t cost extra, and if they ever have a prob-

lem we are there to personally take care of it,” Johnson said. “It’s a huge benefi t to travelers and only a fraction of them take advantage of it.”

Travel agents and consultants are responsible for every step of travel, from pre-departure hotels to travel documents, excursions and transfers. Both Fulkerson and Johnson don’t charge for booking vacations — they get paid in commissions through the resorts so the price of booking is never higher — so both say they

for a customer.“You travel once a year,” John-

son said. “I go to these places all of the time. Resorts change, service gets better or worse. I am training all of the time to take the guesswork out of traveling for my customers. When they come to me, they know I will send them somewhere worthwhile.”

Besides the expertise, using an agent can also save both time and money. The internet has caused a do-it-yourself travel boom, Fulkerson said, but it could take hours to sift through offers on the web. Most travel agents also don’t charge fees for book-ing a complete vacation, and that, coupled with personal relationships with booking agents, saves most people money.

Paducah Water is on track to move into a new offi ce on North Eighth Street by the end of the year, said Glen Ander-son, general manager.

Workers completed the roof of the new offi ce build-ing at 1800 N. Eighth St. on Sept. 6 and planned to fi nish the building’s electrical wir-ing by the end of October.

“It’s coming along pretty fast,” Anderson said.

In June, Anderson announced employees will leave the company’s downtown offi ce at 401 Washington St. Those 10 employees, including An-derson, will move to a new $750,000 offi ce near the company’s water quality and distribution center.

The 5,900-square-foot building will feature more parking than the Wash-ington Street location, Anderson said.

People Plus, Inc. acquired the Calvert City offi ce of Michigan-based Dari Integrity Resourc-es, Inc., according to a People Plus release.

People Plus assumes the ongoing contracts and will hire the existing staff and employees.

“The Calvert City offi ce is a good fi t for our con-tinued growth,” said Amy Sanderson, People Plus president, in a release.

People Plus has eight offi ces in Kentucky and celebrates its 25th anni-versary in May 2013. The company places workers with employers in tempo-rary positions that have

the potential to turn into full-time positions.

“We intend to keep the of-fi ce open in its current loca-tion and continue to recruit

the best people to fi ll our increased demand for quali-fi ed employees for the area’s business, industry and gov-ernment units,” Sanderson

said, is the personal service. One of her clients is a dia-betic who must refrigerate his medication. Most hotel rooms don’t have refrigera-tors anymore, but Johnson said she calls ahead to make sure one is placed in her customer’s hotel room.

“If you don’t care about where your room is or how your travel is booked, go on

the internet,” Fulkerson said. “If you want the very best ocean view, the most beauti-ful beachfront dinner, then you come to me. That’s what I do. I take a generic vacation and make it personal.”

NEW YORK — Regu-lators are investigating whether several major U.S. banks failed to moni-tor transactions properly, allowing criminals to launder money, accord-ing to a New York Times story. The newspaper cited offi cials who it said spoke on the condition of anonymity.

The Offi ce of the Comp-troller of the Currency, the federal agency that oversees the biggest banks, is leading the money-laundering inves-tigation, according to the Times. The report said the OCC could soon take action against JPMorgan Chase & Co., and that it is also investigating Bank of America Corp. Money laundering allows people to make money — often obtained illegally — ap-pear like it came from another source.

The OCC didn’t imme-diately comment. JPMor-gan and Bank of America declined to comment.

The fi nancial industry is struggling to mend its pub-lic image. Four years after the fi nancial crisis, banks

are getting closer scrutiny. And regulators are under pressure to show that they’re not missing any questionable activity.

This summer, Brit-ish bank Barclays PLC settled charges that it had manipulated a key global interest rate. Standard Chartered PLC, also based in the U.K., agreed to settle charges that it had improperly pro-cessed money for Iran, brought by the New York Department of Financial Services after the bank voluntarily informed reg-ulators that it was review-ing relevant practices. In the spring, JPMorgan surprised shareholders with an unexpected trad-ing loss.

If the OCC takes action, it could be similar to a cease-and-desist order that it fi led against Citigroup in April. At the time, the OCC said that Citi had defi cient internal controls and anti-money laundering proce-dures. In bank regulation, a cease-and-desist order doesn’t mean that a bank has to shut down, but it is a serious sanction that re-quires a bank to change its

practices. Citi had already told the regulator that from 2006 to 2010, it had “failed to adequately moni-tor” some of its transac-tions connected to “foreign correspondent banking.”

The order in April didn’t make any new, specifi c accusations. But it did instruct Citigroup to tighten its rules so it could improve com-pliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and related regulations. The act re-quires fi nancial institu-tions to report suspicious activity and to put rules in place to try to make money laundering impos-sible for customers.

Last year, JPMorgan paid $88 million to settle charges from the Trea-sury that it had unlaw-fully processed money for Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Liberia.

At the time, JPMor-gan said it had had no intent to violate regula-tions. It pointed out that it oversaw “hundreds of millions of transactions and customer records per day, and annual error rates are a tiny fraction of a percent.”

Report: US banks subject of money-laundering probe

ROME — Two Italian Cabinet ministers have demanded that carmaker Fiat, which controls Chrysler, clarify its plans for investments in Italian plants amid mounting concern over possible closures.

Economic Develop-ment Minister Corrado Passera said the govern-

ment isn’t interfering in Fiat’s decision-making but that its concern is justifi ed, given Fiat’s importance in Italy. He criticized what he called a series of “too many unclear and unintelligible communiques” concern-ing Fiat’s future.

Labor Minister Elsa Fornero said she had approached Fiat for a

meeting, reminding the automaker it had a responsibility to its work-ers, not just shareholders.

Italy’s largest employer reiterated Thursday that it would provide details about its plans during an earnings call Oct. 30. Sales in Italy, Fiat’s main market in Europe, dropped by 20 percent in the fi rst six months of 2012.

DETROIT — Govern-ment safety regulators are investigating Ford’s Crown Victoria police cars due to complaints about defective steering columns.

The probe affects about 195,000 cars from the 2005 through 2008 model years.

The government has received three complaints that part of the steer-ing column can separate and cause loss of steering control. No crashes or injuries were reported, the National Highway Traf-fi c Safety Administration said in documents posted Saturday on its website.

Investigators will deter-mine if the cars have a safety defect and whether a recall is needed. So far the vehicles haven’t been recalled.

Ford spokeswoman Susan Krusel said that the company is aware of the investigation and is cooper-ating. The problem only af-fects police versions of the Crown Victoria, she said.

The Crown Victoria had been the police car of choice in the U.S. for 15 years before Ford Motor Co. stopped making it at the end of 2011. The Dearborn, Mich. company controlled 70 percent of the police car market and averaged sales of 50,000 per year.

NHTSA said in the documents that two of the complaints involved police cars and one affected a lo-cal government vehicle. In all three cases, the steering column separations hap-pened at low speeds. One complaint said steering effort increased just before the separation.

The government also has received 10 complaints that inspections found steering columns that were about to separate.

In one complaint, the driver reported that when the steering column separated, there was no mechanical connection to the front wheels.

“The operator was able to bring the vehicle to a

safe stop, but they had just begun to accelerate from a traffi c light when the shafts separated and the vehicle’s speed was minimal,” said the complaint, fi led on May 18, 2010. NHTSA does not iden-tify who fi led a complaint.

The Montgomery Coun-ty, Md., Police Department said earlier this week that it was inspecting its 324 Crown Victorias because of a steering problem with its cruisers. Police said that since July, two cruisers were affected by the prob-lem that had the potential to cause the steering to fail during normal operation. There were no crashes are injuries during the inci-dents. Police in Tucson, Ariz. also recently began inspecting its fl eet of Crown Victorias. The po-lice offi cer union says that at least six vehicles were found to be defi cient and in need of repair Tucson police said the department expects to conduct a more thorough investigation in the coming weeks.

TEHRAN, Iran — The Great Satan still sells in Iran. Even after decades of diplomatic estrange-ment and tightening eco-nomic sanctions, American products manage to fi nd their way into the Iranian marketplace. The routes are varied: back channel exporters, licensing work-arounds and straightfor-ward trade for goods not covered by the U.S. em-bargoes over Iran’s nuclear program.

It offers lessons in the immense diffi culties facing Western attempts to isolate Iran’s economy, which has deepening trade links with Asia where distributors serve as middlemen to fun-nel U.S. and other goods to Iranian merchants. But sanctions are also battering Iran’s currency and driv-ing up costs for all imports, which could increase do-mestic pressures on Iran’s ruling system.

Although the number of Made-in-America items in Iran is dwarfed by the ex-ports from Europe, China and neighboring Turkey, some of the best-known U.S. brands can be tracked down in Tehran and other large cities. It’s possible to check your emails on an iPhone, sip a Coke and hit the gym in a pair of Nikes.

“I’m always looking for what new Apple products are in the windows,” said Kamyar Niaki, a 19-year-

old freshman at Tehran’s Azad University, as he played Angry Birds on his iPhone 4S — about $800 in Iran — at a northern Teh-ran shopping mall popu-lar with young people for its selection of computers, mobile phones, software and apps. The iPhones and other Apple products typi-cally enter Iran through networks in Dubai or from Asian distributors, which also ship everything from lower-cost MacBook fakes to bogus Levi’s and Tommy Hilfi ger.

Similar trade routes from the Far East or nearby Dubai also bring in West-inghouse appliances, Mi-crosoft programs. And they were probably also re-sponsible for the Epiphone model guitar by Nashville-based Gibson that Ali Mah-moudi bought for his old-est son last week for about $1,200 — more than dou-ble the price in the United States.

“My son learned from his classmates in high school that American guitars are still the best,” said Mah-moudi, an engineer.

Middle-aged Iranians have memories of a time when stores were awash with U.S. products and the Cadillac was the gold stan-dard on the roads, which still have some Detroit be-hemoths from the 1970s weaving through Tehran’s relentless traffi c.

The U.S. became vilifi ed as the Great Satan after the 1979 Islamic Revolution,

and chants of “Death to America” remain a staple at Friday prayers at Tehran University. But even Iran’s leadership could not stamp out the taste for Coke and Pepsi.

Both iconic American drinks have been main-stays for years in one of the Middle East’s largest con-sumer markets with 75 mil-lion people. The U.S. Trea-sury sanctions on Iran give some leeway for food and beverages, allowing The Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo to work through non-U.S. subsidiaries to ship their syrup to Iranian bottlers and distributors.

It’s brought some back-lash from hard-liners who cringe at the popularity of Coke and Pepsi at the ex-pense of local rival Zamzam Cola, named after a ven-erated well in the Islamic holy city of Mecca. Zamzam is owned by a government-backed foundation. Yet in the cola wars, Iran is strug-gling.

Reza Kazemi, a worker at a government-owned Tehran hospital, carried a family-size Coke — 1.5 li-ters at the equivalent of 50 cents — among his grocer-ies from a shop in down-town Tehran. “My wife and three children like it,” he said. “It’s delicious.”

The same shop stocks Gillette razors and Pam-pers diapers, both made by Procter & Gamble Co., whose health care products are not blocked by sanc-tions.

NEW YORK — The Dow Jones industrial average is dumping Cool Whip for copays. The Dow, perhaps the most widely known barometer of the U.S. stock market, an-nounced Friday that it would boot Kraft Foods to make room for United-Health Group, the insur-ance company.

The change takes effect Sept. 24. S&P Dow Jones Indices, which manages the average, said it was dropping Kraft because it is about to become a much smaller company after spinning off its North American grocery business.

The shuffl e will not af-fect the level of the Dow, which closed Thursday above 13,500 and at a four-year high.

The formula used to calculate the average is recalibrated every time a company is added or dropped.

Kraft, which also makes Cheez Whiz and the fa-miliar blue-box macaroni and cheese, had a short shelf life on the Dow. It was added during the fi -nancial crisis in Septem-ber 2008, replacing crip-pled insurer American International Group.

UnitedHealth Group was added because of health care’s growing im-

portance in the U.S. econ-omy, said David Blitzer, chairman of the index committee. The Dow in-cluded drugmakers Pfi zer and Merck but no com-panies focused on health insurance.

UnitedHealth stock jumped $1.38 in early trading to $55.27, but later in the day it fell back and was fl at.

He was a member of Harrison Street Mission-ary Baptist Church, where he served as an usher. He

ager in Detroit.

He was also a volunteer with Paducah-McCracken County Senior Citizens, Inc. and the city of Pa-ducah’s Nuisance Code En-forcement Board. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving during WWII.

He is survived by his wife, Delois E. Davis of Paducah; four stepchildren, Jerry A. Blake, Vanessa Blake and Jacqueline Blake, all of De-troit, and Minister Huey

(Corliss) P. Blake of At-lanta; two granddaughters, Tenia (Brian) Ray of Deca-tur, Ill., and Vickie (Carlos) Jackson of St. Paul, Minn.; three great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; several stepgreat-grand-children; nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Bob was born in Youngstown, Ohio. He was a computer security specialist for Bell South

Commu-nications. Bob was a for-mer high s c h o o l t e a c h -er and coach for W a r r e n East in B o w l i n g G r e e n .

Bob was a member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Western Kentucky Uni-versity in Bowling Green.

BENTON — David A. La-haie, 71, passed away Sun-day, August 5, 2012, in Ka-lamazoo, Mich.

He was born on Sep-tember 20, 1940, in Joliet, Ill., the son of Arthur and

Helen La-haie.

Y e a r s ago, he s e r v e d h o n o r -ably with the Unit-ed States Navy. He had been employed as a steel

mill fi reman and a steel worker on the production line for 25 years at the Gary, Ind., plant.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

On August 6, 1966, he was united in marriage to Dorothy A. (Watkins) La-haie, who survives. Dave and Dottie retired in 2004 and made Aurora, Ky.,

their new home.David is also survived by

two sons, Michael Lahaie of Mattawan, Mich., and Jeffrey Lahaie of Valpara-iso, Ind.; two grandsons, Clint and Cody Lahaie of Mattawan; three brothers, Eugene (Joyce) Lahaie of Hobart, Ind., Jack Lahaie of Phoenix, Ariz., and Tony (Susan) Lahaie of Val-paraiso, Ind.; and many extended family members.

MACAU — In the Phil-ippines, a $4-billion ca-sino will soon rise from reclaimed land on Manila Bay. In South Korea, for-eign investors are expected to break ground next year on a clutch of casino resorts offshore. And on the eastern edge of Russia, authorities plan a resort zone aimed at drawing Chinese high-roll-ers.

The projects are part of a casino building boom rolling across Asia, where governments are trying to develop their tourism mar-kets to capture increasingly affl uent Asians with a pen-chant for gambling. They’re building glitzy, upscale Las Vegas-style resorts in a bid to copy the runaway success of Asian gambling hubs Macau, which rapidly became the world’s biggest casino market after ending a monopoly, and Singapore, where the city-state’s fi rst two casinos raked in an esti-mated $6 billion a year after their 2010 openings.

The casino boom high-lights how the gambling in-dustry is being propelled by the region’s rapid economic growth, with millions enter-ing the middle class thanks to rising incomes that allow them to spend more on trav-el and leisure pursuits. But it has also intensifi ed debate over the social ills and per-ceived economic benefi ts of the gambling industry.

“Defi nitely, the success of Macau has set off a chain re-action in what is happening in the region,” said Francis Lui, vice chairman of Macau casino operator Galaxy En-tertainment Group. “After the success of Macau and Singapore, of course you see more countries now as-sessing the pros and cons of having gaming as a driving engine for bigger economic growth.”

“In the future the region is going to have more casi-nos.”

The fortunes to be made are immense. After Macau ended a four-decade mo-nopoly and allowed in for-eign operators such as Las Vegas Sands Corp., Wynn

Resorts and MGM Resorts International, the former Portuguese colony on the southern edge of China quickly overtook the Las Ve-gas Strip as the world’s big-gest gambling market. The foreign operators helped supercharge growth in Ma-cau — previously known for its aging, seedy, no-frills ca-sinos — by building fl ashy gambling palaces drawing wealthy mainland Chinese. Last year the city of just 500,000 people raked in $33.5 billion in gambling revenue.

In Singapore, the Ma-rina Bay Sands and Re-sorts World Sentosa, which together cost more than $10 billion, have put the city on track to becoming the world’s second-biggest gambling market.

By 2015, consultants PricewaterhouseCoopers predict the surge in Asian casino revenues will have “fundamentally reshaped the landscape of the global industry” and help Asia edge out the United States as the world’s biggest re-gional market.

PWC forecasts that the Asia-Pacifi c gambling mar-ket will more than double from $34.3 billion in 2010 to $79.3 billion in 2015, surpassing the U.S., which is estimated to grow from $57.5 billion to $73.3 billion in the same period.

A number of projects planned or under way across the region are help-ing to fulfi ll that prediction.

Cambodian operator Nagacorp, which runs the only casino in the Southeast Asian city’s capital, Phnom Penh, plans to open a $369 million expansion including hotels and shopping later this year. The company op-erates buses equipped with massage chairs to pick up punters from neighboring Vietnam.

Vietnam will get its fi rst casino-resort next year. Canadian company Asian Coast Development is set to open a fi ve-star MGM-branded beachfront com-plex in the southeast. It’s part of a $4.2 billion tour-ist development aimed at drawing foreign visitors.
