Randy Shull was born in Sandwich, Illinois, in 1962. He received a BFA degree from Rochester

Institute of Technology in 1986. His early development was nurtured by his father, a master

carpenter and furthered through rigid training as a furniture designer. Shull’s work has evolved

naturally over time from furniture to painting and to the creation of entire large scale spaces that

incorporate all of his talents. Randy’s most recent and largest project to date is the creation of

Pink Dog Creative, a re -development of a former warehouse into a mixed use space with 15

artist studios, two restaurants and a non-profit gallery. He operates studios in Asheville, North

Carolina and Merida, Mexico.

Shull’s work has been the subject of several museum exhibitions. In 2012 Channeling the USA,

curated by Janet Koplos, debuted at the McColl Center in Charlotte, NC and traveled to Virginia

Wesleyan University and was accompanied by a catalog. In 2010, Crossing Boundaries, a mid-

career survey exhibition, traveled to The Gregg Museum, Raleigh, NC, the Museum of Craft and

Design, San Francisco, CA, the Bellevue Art Museum, Bellevue, WA, and to the Ogden Museum,

New Orleans, LA. A full color catalog was produced.

His work is in the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Museum; The High Museum in Atlanta;

The Renwick Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C.; The Mint Museum of Craft & Design

in Charlotte; Racine Museum of Art; The Gregg Museum of Art & Design, The Asheville Art

Museum, The Mobile Museum of Art, and Museum of Art and Design in New York.

In 1993, Shull received a North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship grant and in 1994 an NEA grant

through the Southern Arts Federation.

Our Partnership

The Caldwell Arts Council was organized and

Incorporated in 1976 to establish and maintain

an awareness for and an appreciation of the

cultural arts in Caldwell County.

The Tri-State Sculptors Educational Association

was formed in 1978 by a group of sculptors

from Virginia, South Carolina and North Carolina,

to promote public awareness and appreciation

of sculpture in the region and to exchange

ideas and information among its members.

Mountain Sculptors is an association of artists

creating three-dimensional work in Western NC

and surrounding region. The group’s activities

enhance community awareness, understanding

and appreciation of contemporary sculpture,

and advance members’ technical, aesthetic

and professional development.

The City of Lenoir was a founding partner of this

event and has continued to support it through

true collaboration and many manpower hours.
