ST. BERNARD OF CLAIRVAUX CHURCH BRADFORD, PA CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF BRADFORD OCTOBER 21, 2018

Do you and I sound like the sons of Zebedee, James and John, in today’s gospel? If we look back at

some of our actions, we truly do. Like James and John we too want to be noticed, we too want to be

rewarded for whatever we do. Like our Olympians we too strive for the gold medal and anything below

that is seen as a failure on our part.

Let us listen to the words of Jesus as He tries to get them and us back on the right path: “You know

that those who are recognized as rulers over the Gentiles Lord it over them, and their great ones make

their authority over them felt. But it shall not be so among you. Rather, whoever wishes to be great

among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all.” Jesus

uses the term slave and servant. Following Jesus is not about power; it is not about perks of some position we hold; or

showing off some status symbols we have. How many times have we questioned ourselves when we see some important

person lose their job due to some impropriety and then is rewarded with an outrageous severance package. Our role, like that

of Jesus, is the role of servant; that is going out to help someone that may need it.

To give you an example of this, many of you may have seen the movie Schlinder’s List. Here was a German businessman,

Oskar Schlinder, during World War II, who used his talents to save Jews and not make himself rich. He populated his factory

workers with captured Jews and then found ways to keep them alive and safe. With this arrangement, he saved many Jews

while putting himself at constant risk throughout the war. Schindler’s valor and leadership skills assisted a frightened humanity,

and he did it without fanfare.

Food for thought – following Jesus is not about being first, it is about doing the right thing at the right time, just as Oskar

Schlinder did. As Jesus said; “I have come not to be served, but to serve and to give my life as a ransom for many.”

God bless., Fr. Ray

ALL PARISHIONERS PLEASE NOTE:

ALL WEEKDAY (Monday through Saturday morning) MASSES

ARE CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

DUE TO THE PRIESTS’ HEALTH

I want to take this opportunity to thank all who are involved in Crock Pot Soup and Salad Supper on

the 27th Saturday of October to benefit the elevator lift at the rectory. We need and appreciate your

support.

After the plans were in motion for this delightful Crock Pot Soup and Salad fundraiser, we gratefully received a sizeable dona-

tion toward the elevator lift, with the understanding that it would remain anonymous. We have also received many individual

donations totaling almost $6,000. Thank you all so very much!

However, your support is still needed for this fundraiser! The anonymous donation will cover a good portion of the elevator

lift, but we do not know the final cost of it and its installation. There will be demolition of the concrete floors and preparation of

the walls inside the shaft, and electrical work that will be needed to finish the project. Then additional costs for the PA State

inspection and upkeep of the elevator lift each year. As you can see, there is more to it than just purchasing an elevator lift

and all of these factors must be considered in the final cost.

And let me also remind you that any “extra” money collected for the elevator lift project will remain here in the parish. As you

can see from the bulletin, our weekly offertory does not come close to covering our weekly expenses. Every little bit helps!

Fr. Ray

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE While many good books abound on marriage and parenting, Jesus tells us in today’s gospel the real secret: satisfying relationships depend on how well we sacrifice our needs to serve others. It is not about “getting,” it’s about “giving” our-selves.
