After sweeping the previous weekend against Port Huron, the Carolina Thunderbirds are back on the road against Watertown this weekend. Carolina defeated the Wolves twice, February 8 and 9, both by a three-goal margin. The Thunderbirds are a team that remains atop the FPHL and continues to push the right buttons for improvement. Newest Thunderbird Jon Buttitta had four points in his opening weekend in Carolina and Gleb Krivoshapkin and Ramil Talipov both have notched goals and assists. Meanwhile, the Wolves continue to race against Elmira for second place in the east division with Danbury leading the way on that side of the table. Head coach Andre Niec could be one victory shy of tying the all-time FPHL wins record, returning home on March 6 for a series of three games against Columbus. Quick hits RECORD STANDINGS PTS. LOCKING IT IN After Columbus defeated Danbury in overtime last weekend, the west division playoff picture is set with Carolina, Port Huron, Danville and Columbus making it in. No team has secured the top seed in the division for divisional-home-ice advantage, but the Thunderbirds are the closest team to doing so as the division leader. Playoffs are formatted as the lowest-seed hosting the first game of a three-game series and the final two games being played in the team with home-ice advantage’s arena. The dates for the FPHL playoffs are Apr. 10-12, 17-19, 24-26. All teams in the west division outside of Columbus have won one Commissioner’s Cup championship. No team in FPHL history has ever won back-to-back championships, the Danbury Whalers came close, losing in five games to Dayton.

GRE Carolina’s Jon Buttitta scored twice in his first game as a Thunderbird on Friday night, an impressive performance for the former Mentor Ice Breaker. Buttitta is a product of Middleburg Heights, Ohio and played his collegiate hockey at ACHA- Kent State University as a member of the Golden Flashes. Prior to his college stint, Buttitta played junior hockey with the Cleveland Jr. Lumberjacks of the NA3HL with teammate George Holt. Buttitta would also play 14 games with the Carolina Eagles in Wake Forest, N.C., just north of Raleigh. Before he was loaned to the Quad City Storm of the SPHL, Buttitta’s 18 goals and 20 assists made him the top scorer in the FPHL. Buttitta was signed on Tuesday, February 18 as a free agent. Previously, his rights had been traded to the Delaware Thunder, but he never suited up in Harrington for a game.

Special teams wins The Thunderbirds penalty kill has been the crown jewel of the FPHL’s man-down units this season. The Birds PK did not allow a goal to the Port Huron Prowlers powerplay unit, the top PP unit in the league, over two games last weekend. “I think that if you do not have a good penalty kill then you can not win,” said head coach Andre Niec, “the PK unit is important to the defensive system for our guys and it has to be the best.” Carolina is currently operating at 88.9% on the penalty kill, remaining atop the league for the 19th-consecutive week this season. On the powerplay, Carolina’s Jan Salak scored over the weekend, but that was the extent of the damage done on the man advantage. The powerplay is rated sixth in the FPHL currently.

    Busy thursday

GRE The Carolina Thunderbirds made three transactions yesterday that netted two players to the team. Carolina signed goaltender Nick Modica from SUNY-Cortland to a PTO, looking to improve the efficiency and depth at the position. Modica had a .922 save percentage and a 3.02 GAA in NCAA-DIII play. The Thunderbirds then acquired F Toni Lampo from Battle Creek in exchange for financial considerations. Lastly, the Birds shipped Lampo and D Ramil Talipov to Mentor for F/D Jiri Pestuka, the former Thunderbird. Pestuka has played for Columbus and Mentor this season already. Andre Niec has remarked that more moves may be coming for Carolina as they look to build a championship team again. The FPHL trade deadline is Monday at 5:00 p.m.

Pro-modica Carolina inked goalie Nick Modica to a PTO on Thursday afternoon. Modica just finished his collegiate career at SUNY-Cortland where he went 55-64 in 119 decisions. Modica had a 3.09 GAA with a .922 SVP over his career with the Red Dragons. The Seffern, N.Y. native played USPHL junior hockey at the Elite division with the Jersey Hitmen in Wayne, N.J. Cortland head coach Joe Cardarelli called the netminder a “battler in the net.”

THE ANNEX The Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex is a multi-purpose 3,050-seat arena that is home to the Carolina Thunderbirds. Originally called Coliseum Annex (as it is built across from the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum), “the Annex” has been home to hockey since it was built in 1989. Aside from being home to the Carolina Thunderbirds, the building is also an inside venue for the Dixie Classic Fair and has hosted world-famous concerts, like the Gatlin Brothers. The Annex is located across the street from BB&T Field, home of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons football team and is three exits down the road from historic Bowman Gray Stadium.

The Thunderbirds have left Jake Mullen in Winston-Salem this weekend for an undisclosed concern. Kelly Curl, Michal Marcinek, and Nick Modica will all be available for play this weekend vs. Watertown.

Carolina’s four longest road trips of the season come in February and March. Date Location Mileage Jan. 30-Feb. 1 Danbury, CT (Danbury) 629 mi. Feb. 14-15 Danville, Ill. (Danville) 619 mi. Feb. 28-29 Watertown, N.Y. (Watertown) 716 mi. March 13-14 Port Huron, Mich. (Port Huron) 640 mi. The only other road trip that the Thunderbirds take in the regular season is to Columbus, a trip they will make four times there-and-back between five games against the River Dragons. Carolina is the best team in the league on the road, having dropped only three road games this season, one in a shootout vs. Danbury. Carolina will be on the road for twelve games after this weekend, playing only eight more at home. All of those games except for two (Watertown Feb. 28-29) are against west division opponents.

    czechmate

Jiri Pestuka is the eighth Czech player to join the Thunderbirds roster. Pestuka is from Prostejov, CZE and has played parts of the last five seasons under head coach Andre Niec and is one of the all-time leading point scorers in Berlin River Drivers history. Pestuka will wear number 24 for Carolina.

On the road again The Thunderbirds will play 10 of their final 16 on the road this season. Carolina is 10-2-1-2 on the road this season, the only two regulation losses coming at Danbury. Carolina’s only remaining home opponents are Columbus and Danville, both of whom will play three games at the Annex in March.

    Watertown Wolves

The Wolves made a blockbuster trade a month ago, sending Tyler Gjurich to Elmira and netting only Tanner Hildebrandt after loans and failures to report. Watertown did acquire Ryan Marker for their playoff push, but are a step behind Elmira and Danbury right now. The Wolves need to keep pace at home this weekend, looking for home-ice advantage in at least the opening round of the playoffs. The Wolves were at one point the top of the east division this season, but surges by Danbury and Elmira have sented the Wolves sliding.

    Watertown WOLVES

-Nearby Fort Drum is home to the U.S. Army 10th Mountain Division also known as the “Pando Commandos” -Watertown, S.D. is named after Watertown, N.Y. The town in South Dakota is home to Birmingham Bulls defenseman Alex Johnson (SPHL). -The Paddock Arcade is the single-longest, continually operating shopping mall in the United States. Built in 1850 it is the second-oldest shopping mall in the country. -Watertown and its surround areas are currently under 3-4 feet of snow. This driving precipitation is extreme due to a meteorological phenomenon known as “lake effect.” This effect occurs when cold air passes over the unfrozen, warmer air over bodies of water, like the Great Lakes, and therefore generates moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere. -F.H.
