extra half knot”.

Said “Westward Isle” skipper, John Histon: “The first six hours was punchy enough but after that it was plain sailing. West of Aran was a bit jumpy but, all in all, there were no weather issues. It was comfortable.”

Commenting on the vessel itself, he said: “Everything is going to be more efficient and we will have a bit more capacity.”

John, a native of Cobh, was previously relief skipper on the “Carmarose” before taking charge of the “Westward Isle”. He has been fishing out of Killybegs since 1988.

Aran Island man, Michael Joyce,

skipper of the “Colmcille” gave the same verdict on the performance of his vessel: “She’s a very fine boat”, he said. “We didn’t get bad weather, really. Steaming into it, she seemed very steady.”

Michael has been skipper of the old “Colmcille” for the past 15 years and has been fishing all his life, since starting to fish lobsters in a half-decker with Jackie Gill. After that, he joined Pauric Joyce and Gregory Conneely and worked on the “Ard Aidhin” for about five years. In 1977, he joined the “Azure Sea” and then the old “Carmarose”.

The plan is that the boats will start fishing horse mackerel in September and then move on the Mackerel when the season starts.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE OWNERS & CREWS OF THE WESTWARD ISLE & COLMCILLE ON THEIR NEW VESSELS

KER GROUP

KER Group were awarded the contract to supply the RSW systems to the new vessels “Colmcille” and “Westward Isle”. The systems were installed in Denmark by Vestvaerftet, and commissioned by KER Group engineers over a four day period.

The RSW systems are on ammonia gas and have a cooling duty of 530kw. The systems have a spray chiller which has many advantages, short pull down time, compact size, low ammonia charge and low freezing risk.

The new amonnia RSW plant is controled by a “touch screen” PLC, where operation, capacity, ampere, temperatures, pressures, flow etc.

are displayed directly in a lay-out diagram of the plant. Starting is done by touching screen buttons. There are also optional sub-menus for record of tank temperatures, power consumption and other indicators.

Said Declan McBrearty of KER: “We are delighted to be involved with these new vessels and are proud to be a trusted partner for supplying RSW systems. We at KER Group wish the management and staff continued success with their new vessels.”

SWAN NET-GUNDRY

Swan Net-Gundry would like to wish KSF continued success with the new FV Colmcille and FV Westward Isle. We are delighted to

have supplied these vessels with a list of the latest technology on fishing gear. The FV Colmcille and FV Western Isle went for 1830 meters x 2 of 22mm DynIce Trawl warp which has worked

well for vessels of this class and size. Dynice trawl warps are a proven method in Pelagic fishing to reduce weight in comparison to conventional wire, which helps to increase trawl opening with improved handling and a reduction in fuel consumption.

Both vessels owners also purchased 2 x 2000 meters of 12.4mm Dynice Data Headline Cable.

DynIce Data is a unique patent pending fibre rope with a central copper conductor and incorporates a dense copper screen to protect the signal from interference. This new headline cable has given satisfactory results on feedback from other vessels for last season. We also supplied both vessels with a more durable version of our Hexagonal nets with 38mm DynIce life-lines. We are pleased to have been chosen for our safety at sea products for these fine vessels including, life rafts, Jackets and Immersion suits and also the complete chandlery package from Swan Net-Gundry.

PROMARA LTD

Noel O’Regan of Promara Ltd has been closely involved with these vessels from the first sketches. He looked after the Owners’ interests throughout the build and helped the project to run smoothly through design, construction and delivery. Noel has been promoting and researching the concept of the Green Trawler for some years. He has argued for a long time that we have been building inefficient and fuel hungry trawlers for years. Noel tank-tested a typical Irish vessel alongside a new concept design to highlight the advancements in moderrn hull design.

The arguments were not new and there were no surprises for Naval Architects when tank-testing was completed at Southampton University except perhaps in the extent of the fuel savings available. The removal of the deep square transom dragging in the water, improvement to water-flow along the hull and to the propeller along with proper

alignment of bilge keels all combined to reduce resistance and improve efficiency. The quest for efficiency continues in these new vessels.

The principles of the Green Trawler were applied and the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands, MARIN, was asked to assess the hull shape, using

the latest in Computerised Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to fine-tune the hulls’ curves. The green trawler paper is available on www.promara.ie.
