Walpole Weekly Community newspaper
proudly published by the
Walpole CRC in litter-free Walpole.
Made possible by our
advertisers and donations.
As a community we would like to thank Thomas Sullivan, a Volunteer Ambulance Officer from Perth, for his assistance at the Regatta and last weekend due to Officer shortages in Walpole.
Thomas was able to stay at our Sub-Centre as we have recently refurbished our front room for
Voluntourism. The fact that we need assistance from outside our area, highlights the need for more volunteers in Walpole.
PLEASE CONSIDER VOLUNTEERING.

We welcome your opinion ATRVC - recent meeting Members of the Rally Organising Committee for the Australian Touring RV Club recently met with Walpole business and community representatives in relation to the Club’s National Rally that is being held at the Rest Point Holiday Park on 2nd to 11th October this year.
Cheryl and Ron Jenkins, the ATRVC Western Australian delegates and organisers for the Walpole National Rally, were pleased with the outcome.
“We were really happy with the commitment given to us, not only by the business and community sectors but by the Community Resource Centre also”, said Cheryl. “We achieved a lot in a very short period of time thanks to the organisation by the Walpole CRC in getting the group together.”
“Not only are we holding our yearly National Rally, it’s our AGM and to boot it is our 20th birthday so there will be celebrations all round, and Walpole is the ideal place to bring our interstate members to” said Ron.
Over 100 members from across Australia are expected to attend the rally, enjoying 10 days of experiencing local attractions and sampling the treats of the area.
Club activities support small local communities and the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Club is built around touring Australia while enjoying fun and good company.

Denmark youth drive 4Youth Fest 2019 Denmark’s youth have been the driving force behind planning Denmark 4Youth Fest 2019 – a weekend-long celebration of youth culture and participation as part of National Youth Week.
The festival was developed by the Shire of Denmark in partnership with students from Denmark Senior High School with support from Albany Youth Support Association, Denmark Community Resource Centre and Denmark Arts.
Now in its second year, the event will run over two days – 4Youth Music Fest on Friday, 12th and the 4Youth Fest on Saturday, 13th April.
Friday’s event, open to 12-18 year olds, will be held at the Denmark Civic Centre and will headline local soul-rock indie singer-songwriter Clay Western and popular DJ Dan FX. Youth bands from Denmark Senior High School will express their musical creativity while a dance competition will allow festival-goers to show off their dance moves.
Saturday’s event will be held at Denmark Skate Park and is open to youth of all ages. It features a free skateboarding workshop and skills competition presented by Skateboarding WA. All equipment will be provided as well as some great prizes.
Free Art workshops, nail art and henna tattoo stalls, a whirlybird ride, a giant bouncy castle and face painting will be on offer. Food stalls and a sausage sizzle by the Denmark Men’s Shed will also be at the event.
Shire of Denmark CEO Mr Bill Parker was impressed with the level of engagement and creativity shown by young people who were integral in developing this year’s events.
“We are really proud of our town’s youth who, with the support of Denmark Senior High School, have jumped on board to help design and drive their own event for their peers alongside our community services team.
“The result of this collaboration is a vibrant, engaging and inclusive event that appeals to our young people,” he said.
The event is jointly funded by the Shire of Denmark, Department of Communities and Denmark Local Drug Action Group.
Tickets for Friday’s event are available at the door or at https://www.trybooking.com/BBQZG and are limited due to venue capacity. All 4Youth Fest 2019 events are alcohol, drug and smoke free.

New oven for the Walpole Community Hall
After 12 months of searching for just the right stove the Walpole Community Hall kitchen has a new free-standing dual fuel Euromaid oven.
This oven was funded by the Shire of Manjimup’s 2018-19 Community Grant Scheme and the additional costs for installation were covered by the Walpole CRC.
Ryley from Deep South Plumbing, came as soon as the oven arrived to ensure it was installed quickly. During the process Ryley discovered that the Centre’s gas regulator was more than 10 years old and needed replacing; this was done that day. The hot water system was found to be leaking gas, so this too was replaced. Walpole CRC Operations Manager, Linda Beard liaised with Jamie Jones from the Shire of Manjimup and these additional items were covered by the Shire. Richard from Wyadup Electrics, connected the electricity for the oven.
The Community Centre has been very busy during the last 12 months, hosting Twilight events, funeral services, movies, community groups and council meetings. I am sure these groups will benefit from this new oven for many years to come.
Thanks to the Shire of Manjimup for the funding.

Local business owner, Ivan Gardner, set up a protest demonstration on the day of the Shire of Manjimup Council Meeting, which was held in Walpole Thursday, 21st March. Mr Gardner’s protest was an endeavor to highlight the impact free camping in the reserve, long bay carpark and Pioneer Park can/will have on the towns image.
This protest included washing strung out, tent, table and litter. These photos were posted to Facebook by a supportive local and garnered much discussion for and against free camping in the Walpole Wilderness area.
Overall it would seem that many locals are in support of free camping but not at the current trial location…

Protest demonstration in Walpole
Councillor David Tapley was contacted by the Walpole Weekly for a comment.
Councillor Tapley said his personal preference is for
RVs to be accommodated somewhere in town.
Public opinion he has gathered indicates that the majority of the community don’t support free camping in Pioneer Park as they feel that it gives a bad image of Walpole.

Ivan Gardner’s Facebook post below:
I’m protesting against our poor representation to the Shire by our local Councillor. When the Town Revitalisation Committee (which I am on) made a recommendation to council, voting 5 to 1 in favour of RV friendly in other locations other than the caravan hard stand opposite the main street in Walpole... Yet our councillor goes to the very next council meeting and goes against the committee’s request/ recommendation, with his own agenda. This action was allowed, this is not representing the will of the people but only one individual. Why even have a committee if they are over ruled by again one person. Where is the democracy in that? ... Ivan

40-bed aged care facility for Denmark Residents requiring aged and dementia care can stay close to loved ones with the Federal Government approving $4 million for a 40-bed aged care facility in Denmark.
Over the past 12 months, the Shire of Denmark has worked closely with Amaroo Care Services – a local not-for-profit organisation – to support their funding application for the facility.
This included the Shire expediting plans to remediate its Hardy Street site as the preferred site for the facility, located next to Amaroo’s existing retirement village.
Shire of Denmark CEO Mr Bill Parker said residents had made it clear when the Shire developed its Strategic Community Plan that more aged-care options in Denmark were urgently needed. Amaroo were able to use this feedback to help build their business case.
“This announcement is wonderful news for our town, and is testament to the Shire’s extensive community consultation process. The community made it very clear that a purpose-built, residential aged care facility to support seniors as they transition through the ageing process was a top priority.
“This clear direction allowed us to allocate resources and advocate for this important project,” he said.
Shire President Cr Ceinwen Gearon met with Federal Aged Care Minister Ken Wyatt, along with Amaroo, Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson and Denmark community representatives to advocate for the additional services in Denmark and was delighted with the decision.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our town and for our neighbours. We have the oldest demographic in WA, and with limited aged care beds available in the townsite many of our older residents find themselves having to move away from their support network when they require residential care, particularly dementia care.
“To be able to keep our older residents in their home town close to their families and friends is such wonderful news,” she said.
In addition to the much needed aged-care services, the facility will boost the local business and employment sectors. The facility is expected to provide 42 jobs during construction and a further 66 jobs from ongoing operations.
“This facility will offer not only employment opportunities for locals, but career pathways as well, particularly for young people. The economic boost to the community will be significant,” Cr Gearon said
The facility will provide 40 government funded places, worth $2.6 million per year. It will include aged accommodation, specialist dementia care and respite services.
The total construction cost for the project is estimated at $15 million to $20 million.

ublic Comment Invited Establishment of Overnight arking for Vehicles.
In order to minimise the level of unauthorised / illegal camping associated within the Walpole area, the Shire is seeking public comment on the potential use of the hardstand within Pioneer Park for overnight camping for vehicles. Should any person or group wish to make a comment on the development application, it is required to be in writing and received by ednesday, 3rd April 01 , 5.00pm. Written submissions are to be addressed to the Chief
Executive Officer, Shire of Man imup and either post-ed to PO Box 1, Man imup WA 6258 or emailed to info@man imup.wa.gov.au More information can be obtained by contacting Statutory Planning on 9771 7777.
Andrew Campbell, Chief Executive Officer
There have been a lot of posts on Facebook regarding this issue and both Ivan and Dave suggest that Walpole people need to get involved in the process, whether they are for or against the overnight parking of
vehicles.
The details for providing a comment to the Shire of Manjimup can be found in the notice below.
He said he would like to see the current area remain a
24 hour rest stop only, not allowing campers to set up camp.
He suggested opening the topic for public consultation so people can have their own say and the Shire can get the whole community’s opinion.

LOOKING BACK……. with Molly The Walpole Weekly recently featured the story of the demise of the Boxhall tree and this “Looking Back” seemed an ideal time to share a little story from Jack Edmonds. It tells of the time he first saw this magnificent specimen, named after John Boxhall the first teacher at Tingledale School. Jack Edmonds’ parents were pioneer settlers of the Tingledale group settlement. He married Dorothy Rich and together they farmed and raised their family on their North Walpole property. Jack’s grandson, David Edmonds is a resident of rural Walpole. Unfortunately the date of Jack’s story is unknown………...Here are his words:
“This tree has the greatest circumference of any karri tree known in the district. It is growing in an area on the east side of the Frankland River known as Boxhall’s Block.
During the 1920s and 1930s hundreds of visitors were taken up the Frankland River to see, admire and carve their names in the bark of this healthy giant that stood almost alone in open country. Both Mr Tom Swarbrick and Mr Ted Bellanger took groups on these trips in their boats.
Mr Boxhall was the schoolteacher at Tingledale, where I lived on my father’s block with my family. He was a good teacher and also good with a compass.

In 1925, Mr Boxhall asked my brother Len and myself to help him blaze a track from the top corner of Dad’s block to the top corner of his block on the Frankland, a distance of about four miles through virgin karri. After blazing the first tree we continued, with the aid of Mr Boxhall’s compass, to blaze a tree, then push on through the thick bush as fast as we could and blaze the next. Finally we came out on Boxhall’s fence line, only a few yards from the corner that had been our goal! We carried on across his block to the river and that was the first time I saw this giant karri tree.
This track made it possible for us to reach the Frankland River for fresh fish, or for a swim where previously we had to go to Peaceful Bay – about twelve miles.
Later we had picnics by the river on Mr Boxhall’s place and sometimes we took some of the girls along. I remember particularly one fine day a big group of us got to the river for a picnic when the weather turned bad. The wet, miserable, return trek along the five mile narrow track to our house is hard to forget as is the immense pot of hot soup my mother had on the boil when we arrived! Young folk who were in that picnic group came from the families of Olds, Boast, Harris, Pascoe, Rich, Anning and Edmonds.
Today this tree is, sadly, neglected, damaged during the 1950s fire and now completely surrounded by young tingle forest and forest litter, feet deep. The next fire that passes through Boxhall block, which is now owned by the Department formerly know as Conservation and Land Management, will probably be the funeral pyre for this once majestic, still impressive karri, that visitors from all over the world gazed upon with awe…”
(Continued from page 12)
We have an amazing kind God who loves us all individually, he even gives us our own fingerprints and our own DNA.
We are so precious to him that he sent his only son Jesus Christ to die on a cruel cross and that he would take upon himself your sins and mine and if we repent of our misdeeds he forgives us and promises us everlasting life in heaven and it is there that we realise death isn’t the end, it is just the beginning of millions of years in paradise with other Christians and our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.
May God bless you all.
