A. THREE SITUATIONS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS. Jas. 5:13-16

1.The Case for Prayer when Afflicted. Jas. 5:13aIs any among you afflicted? let him pray.

a. The Affliction Posed: kakopatheō

i. The Connotation: Affliction, Anguish, Distress, Tribulation, Trouble = Suffering in Difficult circumstances. II Tim. 2:9

ii. The Connection: from kakopatheia to undergo hardship :- be afflicted, endure afflictions (hardness), suffer trouble.

Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. Behold, we count them happy [blessed, HCSB] which endure.

The Experiences of the People: Rom. 5:3, HCSBWe also rejoice [glory, KJV] in our afflictions,

because we know that affliction produces endurance.

iii. The Character developed through Affliction:

The Prophets developed Patience (endurance) through Pain. 5:10Job, Perplexed with Problems, developed Perseverance. 5:11 Ye

have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.

Job Endured Steadfastly and Ended with Sure blessings from the Lord. cf. Job 42:10-12ff

The LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

Note: James did not say that Job had makrothymia, “Patience”, but that he had hypomonēn, “Perseverance" cf. James 1:3; Col. 1:11

b. The Adversities are to be Anticipated as God’s People:

As God's people go through life, they often must endure difficulties, though not necessarily the Consequences of sin or the Chastening of God.i. By Faithful Followers of Christ. Mt. 24:9

ii. But they are to be Full of Good Cheer and Courage (tharseō). Jn. 16:33

i. God will Get us out of the situation if it is His Will, cf. Christ’s Gethsemane Prayer Mt. 26:39

ii. God will Give us more Grace to endure the situation, cf. Paul’s Petition. II Cor. 12:8-10

iii. God can Transform Tragedies into Triumphs,cf. the Sisters’ Pleading. Jn. 11:3, 4, 40-45

This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God,that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

2. The Case for Praise – When in Sufficiency. Jas. 5:13bIs any merry? let him sing psalms.

a. When Satisfied and feeling Sufficient (Merry = Cheerful), Sing!

i. “Merry” here is Euthymeō = be of good Cheer (3 occ.) Acts 27:22, 25

ii. Compare “merry”, Euphrainō = fare, farewell; gladly, merry, rejoice

(14 occ.) Lk. 12:19 (enjoy yourself, HCSB); 15:23, 24, 29, 32; Rev. 11:10 (Celebrate, HCSB)

2. The Case for Praise – When in Sufficiency. Jas. 5:13ba. When Satisfied and feeling Sufficient, Sing!

b. The Book of Psalms is a Treasure chest of Songs Sung amid Troubles and Trials.

• "Psalms" (psalletō) = to Play on a stringed instrument. Verb is used only 4 times in the New Testament

(cf. Rom. 15:9; 1 Cor. 14:15; Eph. 5:19).i. God Gives Songs in the night to Sing. Job. 35:10ii. Paul and Silas Sang Songs at Midnight. Acts 16:25

When Sufficient and Satisfied, SING!

Singing, singing, I go singing, Yes, I’m always singing;

Christ holds my hands, By faith I standAnd as the hours are winging,

I press along with a cheerful song,Singing, singing, singing.

a. The Context of the Sick – Is any sick among you? 5:14a

Who are the Sick?

i. "sick" (astheneō) = weak, debilitated, diseased;

The Seriously Sick who cannot attend a church Service that he has to Send for the Shepherds of the church.

Who are the Sick?

i. The Seriously Sick ?ii. Or A Person of Weak Faith or Weary in Walk?

“sick” (asthenei) lit. = weakCf. Acts 20:35 - …ye ought to support the weak

I Cor. 8:9-12 – a stumblingblock to them that are weak. (9) the conscience of him which is weak (10)

shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died? (11) …wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ. (12)

Note: Cf. kamnonta, (5:15), sick, literally means "to be weary“ as in Heb. 12:3 – “weary and faint” – only other occ.

a. The Context of the Sick –Who are the Sick? 5:14ab. The Call for the Pastors (Elders) of the Church. Jas. 5:14b

let him call for the elders of the church• Note: It is the Single Sick Sending for the Elders,

and not one Evangelist calling out the Sick.

c. The Care of the Elders for the Sick. Jas. 5:14c let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord

i. For the Seriously Sick?• They Pray over him and Anoint (lit. rub with oil) him

A Practice common with many People in the Middle East rubbing the sick with oil for medicinal, not religious, Purpose relaxing the weak body.

• Prayer with medical Prescription?

ii. For the Weak and Weary?Anoint (aleipsantes) lit. = rub with oil – a Secular term

Not (chriō) = ceremonially anoint – a Sacred term.

"referring to the common practice of using oil as a means of bestowing honor, refreshment, and grooming" (Daniel R. Hayden, "Calling the Elders to Pray”) The woman "Poured" (aleiphō) Perfume on Jesus' feet. Lk. 7:38 A Host "put oil" (aleiphō) on the Head of his guest. Lk. 7:46 A Fasting person should not be sad and ungroomed, but should "put

oil" (aleiphō) on his head, and wash his Face. Mt. 6:17

Thus the "Weak" (asthenei) and "Weary" (kamnonta) would be refreshed, encouraged, and uplifted.

a. The Consequences of the Prayer of Faith. Jas 5:15a And the prayer of faith shall save the sick

i. The Restoration and the “Saving”. 5:15a For the Seriously Sick, he will be Saved (Raised up?) For the Spiritually Weary (the sick, lit., "weary one"),

he Will be Well.

The Lord shall raise him up; Note: It is Subject to the Lord’s Conditional Sovereign Will

– the Lord shall

It is also Subject to the Confession and Cleansing of Sin.See next slide.

i. The Restoration and the “Saving”. 5:15a

ii. Is the Result of the Sickness Caused by Sin?5:15b if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him

The Spiritual Condition has first to be Settled. However, Sin need not always be the Source or the

Cause.

iii. The Relationship to be Sustained 5:16The Personal Confession, if there is need - Confess your faults one

to another• Note: it is not the Confession to the Single Priest!The Prayerful Concern for one another - pray one for anotherAnd Prayer for Cure - that ye may

be healed (iathēte, of the soul?) • Cf. Mt. 13:15; Heb. 12:13; 1 Pet. 2:24 After the Sin problem has been Dealt with,

then prayer can be made for healing. It is not Submission to Death cf.

Extreme Unction, Sacrament of Penance, Viaticum!

a. The Context of the Sick - Who are the Sick? – Jas. 5:14ab. The Call for the Pastors (Elders) of the Church. Jas. 5:14bc. The Care of the Elders for the Sick: Jas. 5:14cd. The Consequences of the Prayer of Faith. Jas 5:15a

e. The Conditions in the Product of Faith:• The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

i. The Prayer (effectual fervent from one Greek word = Energy and Enthusiasm)

• Thus, Energised by the Spirit and Ernest, Simple and Specific..

ii. The Pray-er (righteous man) – Sin will Stop the Success of one’s Supplications!

A. THREE SITUATIONS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS. Jas. 5:13-16B. ELIJAH’S PASSION AND SPECTACULAR PRAYER. 5:17, 181. The Example of Elijah. 5:17a

a. He was a Person of similar Passion like us

i.e. "a man of like Feeling" or "of Similar Suffering" (homoiopathēs; cf. kakopathei in vv. 10, 13),

with all the Frailties of human nature.

b. His Passionate Prayer - he prayed earnestly

Lit., in Prayer he Prayed (proseuchē prosēyxato),

1. The Example of Elijah. 5:17a

2. His Prayer of Passion. 5:17b, 18

a. Rain was withheld and later Restored. Cf. 1 Kgs. 17:1; 18:41-46)

b. Elijah's prayer to Stop the rain was based on Scripture. Deut. 11:16, 17; 28:15, 24

Effective prayers will have Scripture Support.

c. Persistent Prayer is essential; halfhearted prayer is Self-defeating. cf. Jas. 1:6-8

d. The Products of Elijah’s Prayer:

i. It affected the Rain. Jas. 5:17 cf. I Kgs. 17:1 "It rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months"

Elijah's prayer brought disaster to the land of Israel.

ii. It effected Revival. Jas. 5:18

"He prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit"

The Reason Elijah prayed again for the Rain to come: I Kgs. 18:1

The Revival on Mount Carmel Resulting from Elijah's prayer to stop the rain.

• Elijah's praying was very productive.

5:19, 20

1. The Backsliding Person.

a. He is a Believing Brother - 5:19 My

brethren if any among you… ASV

b. His Backsliding:

i. He Errs from the Word of Truth. 5:19

ii. His Errs in his Walk , the error of his Ways. 5:20

iii.. He Errs in Wandering away aimlessly – err

“Err” is planēthē from planē = Wander from planet’s plane.

1. The Backsliding Person.2. The Beckoning Potential to such a Person:

a. He faces Chastening and Discipline by God.Heb. 12

b. He faces Committing sin unto Death. I Jn. 5:16, 17 cf. I Cor. 11:20

3. A Brother’s Part needed for such a Person. Jas. 5:19

a. His Christian brother need to Convert him i.e. turn about, turn again. Thus, Restored and Returned

to Fellowship and Faithfulness to the Lord.

b. Cp. Christ Commissioned Peter when thou art Converted, strengthen thy brethren. Lk. 22:32

4. Both will Profit: let him know he who converteth the sinner 5:20a

a. Benefits for the Restorer – He shall save a soul [life] from death. 5:20b

b. Blessing for the Revived.He shall hide a multitude of sins. 5:20c

CONCLUSION TO JAMES…
