27-29 March 06 TAGPMA Meeting 2
background
• National Laboratory on Scientific Computing - LNCC• Research Institute of Min. Science & Technology – MCT• Early involvement in a National Grid Proposal since 2002
with the participation of RNP, HPC Centers, Univertisities and Research Centers, and MCT funding agencies
• Involvement in Research Projects on Cyberenvironments (Grids) and Applications since 2002
• Involvement in Multiple (8) related Grid projets in the context of RNP Gigabit experimental network
• Assigned by MCT the Coordination of SINAPAD (National HPC System)
• The SINAPAD legal framework is established in 2003
27-29 March 06 TAGPMA Meeting 3
Engagements in Cyberenvironments• Security Issues • Global Insfrastructure• National HPC System SINAPAD as an
extension of NCSA resources• Grid Middleware and Services• Portals to Specific Applications• Targeting Universities and Research
Centers
27-29 March 06 TAGPMA Meeting 4
Some Application Areas and Projects
• HEMOLAB: haemodynamics modeling of the human cardiovascular system
• GENOMA: strong bioinformatics team in the country• CATO: data assimilation, physical oceanography, weather
predictability and climate studies• Medical Simulation System integrating modeling, grids,
haptic devices and training• Dynamics of water in hydrologic basins• Molecular dynamics (Physics)• GEOMA: environmental modeling in Amazonia• Astronomy (Data Management)

History of academic HPC in Brazil
• Brazil has a territorial extent of about 8.5 million km2 and the federal constitutional order is similar to the USA, with 26 states and a Federal District around the national capital, Brasília.
• The history of academic HPC in Brazil begins in 1990, based on the concept of government-funded regional centers open to universities and research institutes, with 7 such centers being established between 1992 and 1997.
27-29 March 06 TAGPMA Meeting 6
SINAPAD is...
• A network of operational high performance computing centers (7), regionally distributed, aimed at providing computation on demand to education and scientific purposes.
• Objectives include– Foster the HPC culture along the country– Support development of products and applications– Transfer knowledge and technology– Include another 3 center in the nothern region

Remarks
• Will a single Grid - CA be sufficient for a large country as Brazil ?
• More than a dozen Grid initiatives going on and different application focus
• SINAPAD is currently operating a CA a OpenCA version and testing compatibility of ICP-EDU software with GRID Cas
• Recent paper on CTWatch quarterly - february
